Peek inside my 2nd Finnish maternity package - introducing the 2020 version

Loving a baby is a circular business, a kind of feedback loop. The more you give the more you get and the more you get the more you feel like giving.

One thing that I have always considered as a confirmation of becoming a mother, is the Finnish free maternity package. It's something I've been very much looking forward to receiving for the 2nd time as it makes the pregnancy so much more concrete! This time, I received it in July, so it's about time that I introduce it on the blog.

Mielessäni äitiyspakkaus on aina toiminut äitiyden merkkinä, ja olenkin sitä odottanut kuin kuuta nousevaa. Pakkaus tekee vauvan odotuksesta niin paljon konkreettisemman! Tällä kertaa vastaanotin pakkauksen heinäkuussa, joten on jo korkea aika esitellä se blogin puolella.

The maternity package contains baby clothes as well as care products and materials. It is updated yearly in response to feedback from mothers-to-be. While the range of items remains largely the same, the colors and patterns change, and some completely new items are added as well. There are altogether about 56 different items in the box. In Finland, it is available solely as a benefit offered under the Finnish social security system. You can read about the package here if you aren't familiar with it from before. The package is one of the best well-known Finnish phenomena in the world, now available also in many other countries that have been inspired by the Finnish one. Äitiyspakkauksessa on vauvan vaatteita ja hoitotarvikkeita. Äitiyspakkausta uudistetaan vuosittain mm. asiakaspalautteen perusteella. Tuotevalikoima säilyy pitkälti samanlaisena, mutta esimerkiksi tekstiilien värit ja kuosit vaihtelevat ja pakkaukseen valitaan myös täysin uusia tuotteita. Pakkauksessa on yhteensä noin 56 tuotetta. Pakkaus on äitiysavustuslain mukainen sosiaaliturvaetuus, jonka tuotteet on kilpailutettu EU-lainsäädännön mukaan. Voit lukea enemmän äitiyspakkauksesta täältä. This time, it took longer for me to get the package to a nearby supermarket for pick-up after I had made the online application for it. Maybe because it was July, which is Finland's holiday month. In Finland, only women that have been more than five months pregnant can order the package, and it's done by attaching a doctor certificate from the child health center to the online application.

Pakkauksen saaminen kesti kauemmin tällä kertaa, ehkä koska oli heinäkuu. Sain pakkauksen tilattua sähköisen asioinnin kautta Kelan sivuilta. Pakkaus saapui läheiseen K-market -kauppaan. Pakkauksen saa vain äidit, jotka ovat jo ehtineet olla viisi kuukautta raskaana. Sähköisen hakemuksen liitteeksi pitää nimittäin laittaa lääkärintodistus, jonka saa vasta tässä vaiheessa raskautta neuvolasta.

In this blog post, you'll see some of my favorite pieces in the package: baby bodysuits, insulated mittens and booties, the blanket, nightdress, sleeping bag, first book, and the college-style overall. I must say that I find the whole package to be beautifully made, I actually prefer this one to the one that I received in 2016. I like the coloring much more this time!
