My top 5 districts in Helsinki to spot Art Nouveau / Jugend architecture 3/5 Kallio

The longer I live, the more beautiful life becomes. If you foolishly ignore beauty, you will soon find yourself without it. Your life will be impoverished. But if you invest in beauty, it will remain with you all the days of your life.

They say that it's the last day of summer in Helsinki - an ideal moment to continue my blog series about Helsinki's Art Nouveau / Jugend style architecture! Some time ago, I received a request for my blog. One of my followers on Instagram actually asked me to write about Helsinki's Art Nouveau and/or Jugend style architecture. I do get this wish quite a lot, and I was very surprised to notice that I had merely mentioned this incredible architectural style on the blog before - because it is for sure one of the things that I love the most about Helsinki: its high quantity of this castle-like buildings! Third up as an example of Art Nouveau / Jugend districts is Kallio!

On ehkä viimeinen kesäinen päivä, oiva hetki siis jatkaa Jugend -blogisarjaani! Jonkun aikaa sitten eräs Instagram -seuraaja toivoi Jugend -aiheista blogisarjaa. Kolmantena Jugend -kaupunginosana esittelen teille Kalliota!

Kallio

Industrialization began in Helsinki in the mid 19th century. That is when factories sprang up in the then northern part of the city - north of the so-called Long Bridge (Pitkäsilta in Finnish). The factories drew workforce to the city: in 1870, Helsinki merely had 30 000 inhabitants, in 1910 already 120 000. Half of these were workers. Still today, Kallio is one of the few densely built residential areas in Helsinki, so many say that if you want to experience true city life with a lively culture - it can be found here. Art Nouveau or Jugend style architecture in Kallio took the form of both stone buildings and wooden houses.

One of my favorite places in the district is the Bear Park (Karhupuisto), which is located on top of a rocky outcrop and gets its name from the bear granite sculpture that can be found in the park. It also has a wonderful garden that both the city and the locals take much pride in and care for.

Yksi suosikkipaikoistani Kalliossa on Karhupuisto.

Recently, I joined #Wikimedia's #rephotography tour in #Helsinki's #Kallio district. By swiping left, you'll see two sets of before and after photos! 📸 Can you believe that these photos are from the same places? Have you tried rephotography? Here is a hint if you want to try: there is an Estonian app called #Ajapaik that helps you find locations of old photos in Helsinki, but also e.g. Tallinn. By the way, these old photos of Helsinki were captured by #SigneBrander - one of my personal heroes! You'll find more info about her also on the #blog, just search for her name and enjoy reading 🤓 #Linkinbio! Another favorite of mine is Kallio Church. Lars Sonck won an architectural competition in 1906 and designed this breathtaking granite church that was built in 1908-12. The nearby, also stunning, Kallio Library was built at the same time as the church. Kallio Church is considered one of Helsinki's Art Nouveau / Jugend style masterpieces and is located at the end of an axis of streets, an unbroken vista stretching 2,5km from the Observatory Hill in the south to this church.

Toinen suosikki on Kallion kirkko. Lars Sonck voitti arkkitehtuurikilpailun vuonna 1906 ja pääsi suunnittelemaan kirkkoa. Graniittikirkko rakennettiin vuosina 1908-12. Läheinen ja kaunis Kallion kirjasto rakennettiin samanaikaisesti. Kirkkoa pidetään yhtenä Helsingin Jugend -mestariteoksena, ja se löytyy Unioninkadun akselin, eli Unioninakselin, päässä. Unioninakseli on Helsingin kantakaupungin pisin suora katulinja.

Bear Park's oldest castle-like stone building is definitely a favorite! Wonderful place (Ihantola) was designed by O.E. Koskinen in 1907. The facade is lively, with references to vegetal and national-romantic motifs, some even of old Finnish churches. It was erected by a group of workers.

Karhupuiston vanhin & linnamainen kivirakennus on ehdottomasti yksi suosikeistani! Ihantola on O.E. Koskisen suunnittelema vuonna 1907.
