How to teach a Nordic preschooler about a sustainable lifestyle: HSY's workbook

The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.

Recently, my husband visited a waste receiving station, which we in Finland call Sortti stations. While visiting, he picked up a sustainable lifestyle workbook that has been made in 2017 and is targeted at 5-7-year-old children, but we quickly noticed that my daughter also enjoyed it in the company of an adult, even though she's merely turning 4 years this upcoming summer. At the moment, she is really curious about numbers, letters, and fascinated with bacteria. Thanks to the excellent workbook about a mouse named Nökö, she learned about recycling, sorting, household water handling, energy-saving and protecting the environment - things that I think are a vital part of Nordic everyday life and that every child should learn. I noticed that this workbook doesn't exist in English, and not all locals know about it so I thought that I would share it on the blog. Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority's workbook can be downloaded from here (in Finnish). My daughter speaks Swedish, so the workbook is easy to use also if you don't speak Finnish as I'll translate the tasks of it in this blog post.

Mieheni vieraili hiljattain Sortti -asemalla, ja huomasi käyntinsä aikana HSY:n Nökön matkassa -puuhakirjan. Kirja​ on tehty vuonna 2017 ja se on suunnattu 5-7-vuotiaille, mutta huomasimme nopeasti, että tyttäremme kiinnostui siitä vaikka hän täyttää tänä vuonna vasta neljä vuotta. Tällä hetkellä hän on erittäin kiinnostunut numeroista, kirjaimista ja bakteereista. Toki hän kaipasi sen täyttämisessä aikuisen apua vielä, mutta mielestäni kirjan sisältö sopi jo hänen ikäiselle. Kirjassa seikkailee Nökö, jonka kanssa opetellaan muun muassa kierrätystä, lajittelua, kodin vesiasioita, energiansäästöä ja ilmansuojelua - kaikki tärkeitä asioita, joiden kaikkien lasten tulisi mielestäni oppia. Uutta puuhakirjaa voi tilata HSY:ltä maksutta pääkaupunkiseudun ja Kirkkonummen kouluihin ja päiväkoteihin. Sen voi myös tulostaa itse täältä. Koska kaikki paikallisetkaan eivät tiedä kirjasta, niin ajattelin jakaa tietoa siitä tässä blogikirjoituksessa.

On page 2, you can look for 6 differences between the first and second images. / Ensimmäiseksi etsitään kuvien erovaisuuksia.

On page 3, the little mouse is thirsty and you should help him find the right route to his water glass. / Seuraavaksi autetaan hiirtä sammuttamaan janoa.

On page 4, the images should be put in the right order so that the little mouse can get firewood to his fireplace. / Sitten onkin aika auttaa hiirtä laittamaan kuvat oikeaan numerojärjestykseen.

On the next page, you'll learn about different energy sources (sun, wood, wind, waves, and food) and you can finish drawing them. /  Seuraavalla sivulla saat täydentää erilaisia energialähdekuvioita.

On page 6, you'll read that not all gifts need to be new things. They can also be experiences. You can discuss the different activities shown on the page and determine what is the most fun out of them. If you would give one of them to your friend, which one would you choose? / Lahjan ei aina tarvitse olla tavara. Tällä sivulla opit, että se voi olla myös kivaa tekemistä yhdessä. 

Next, you'll learn about flea markets. They are excellent places to sell toys that you don't play with anymore, so that they can become somebody else's treasure. On page 7, you should try to find the items in the row in front on the flea market table. / Sivulla 7 opitaan kirpputoreista. 

On page 8, you'll learn about one of our favorite places: the library. By connecting the dots, you'll see what the little mouse lent from the library this time! / Sivulla 8 opitaan kirjastoista. Kaikkea ei tarvitsee omistaa itse, vaan sen voi myös lainata.

Next, you get to sort biowaste in the correct way. On page 9, you should find the trash that can be put in the biowaste, circle it and draw lines between it and the biowaste bin. /  Nyt lajitellaan biojätettä. Etsimällä kuvia roskista, joita saa laittaa biojäteastiaan, voit yhdistää ne astiaan.

Oh no! On the next page, somebody's put the wrong things in the sewer. Circle what shouldn't be there. How many rats can you find? Write the correct amount in the box. / Voi ei! Sivulla 10 viemäriin on joutunut sinne kuulumattomia tavaroita. Auta etsimään niitä sekä rottia.

On page 11, you can again connect dots to find out who likes to eat the trash that has been incorrectly put into the sewer. / Sivulla 11 saat yhdistää pisteet, jotta selviää kuka tykkää syödä ruokaa viemäristä.

The garbage truck drives around the city on page 12. Collect the correct waste in the right truck on the way to the waste sorting stations. What is made out of recycled and reused trash? / Sivulla 12 roska-autot kiertävät kaupungilla. Auta autoja viemään roskat kierrätykseen.

On page 13, you get to color the images according to the numbers! / Sivulla 13 saat värittää kuvia numeroiden avulla. 

Next, you'll learn what mean of transport creates the least and the most emissions by following the connecting lines. / Seuraavaksi opit kulkuneuvoista ja päästöistä.

Finally, sort the trash into the right waste bins by following the lines. Here are the Finnish words that you need to know to understand the task:

Lasi = Glass

Biojäte = Biowaste

Metalli = Metal

Paperi = Paper

Kartonki = Cardboard

Sekajäte = Mixed waste - find out what is considered mixed waste in Finland here.

Muovipakkaukset = Plastic packages
