Italian work experiences

Helsinki, -14 degrees

All happiness depends on courage and work.

Greetings from winter wonderland! Helsinki has now received snow and once again I can hear the scrunching sound (that I love!) when walking on the snowy streets of Helsinki.

Terveisiä talven ihmemaasta! Helsinki on vihdoinkin saanut nauttia tämän viikon ajan lumesta. Rakastan lumen narskumista pakkasella askelten alla.

After writing my last post, I received some emails and questions from you readers. Thank you so much for that! I'll fill you in in what I've been up to all week in upcoming blog posts. I really appreciate all the feedback and questions that I get from you!

Some of you wanted to know how I ended up working in Italy in 2005-2009, and I thought I would dedicate this blog post to telling you about my work experiences in Italy. I've worked in Italy as an au pair, but I've also done an internship in a hotel. If you're interested, I might write some more posts about my time in Italy, it's up to you! Let me know what you think.

I found my first Italian au pair family through the Finnish company called Allianssin nuorisovaihto. However, I wasn't happy with my first family, so I changed it after three months and switched to a local intermediary called International Au Pair, who found me the family that I stayed with for seven months. Both families were in Milan.

Löysin ensimmäisen italialaisen perheeni Allianssin nuorisovaihdon kautta. En kuitenkaan viihtynyt siinä perheessä, joten vaihdoin perhettä kolmen kuukauden jälkeen. Vaihdoin samalla välittäjäorganisaationkin: tällä kertaa käytin italialaista International Au Pair -organisaatiota. Toisessa perheessä asuin & työskentelin n. seitsemän kuukautta. Molemmat perheet asuivat Milanossa.

It's quite suitable to write about my second work experience in Italy right now, as the MATKA Nordic Travel Fair is on here in Helsinki. Why, you might ask. Well, it just so happened that my second work experience got its start at MATKA! I went to the MATKA fair in 2009 and went through all the Italian stands, handing out my CV. After a couple of weeks, I was approached by a hotel in Lignano Sabbiadoro, halfway between Venice and Trieste, called Hotel Daniele that came to be the place for my internship. So for all of you dreaming about working in another country, I would the Nordic Travel Fair MATKA is a great opportunity to find an internship/workplace!

Have you ever worked in another country? How did you find that workplace?

Oletteko koskaan työskennelleet ulkomailla? Miten löysitte työpaikan?

What's your opinion?

  1. never worked outside my home city. Most Americans usually never get a chance to work in another country. Unless they live close to the Canadian border or Mexico.

    1. I've met many Americans that travel for work. It must be different in the field of media or tourism?

    1. Matkakuume on mukava tunne.

  5. nope, haven't worked in another country.. or city :P but I know this au pair thing is rather popular among young Estonian girls as well. oh and other popular thing is working in a hotel in some sunny country. when it comes to me then yes, I love travelling but I think I appreciate my own country too much to move away from here. it's wonderful to see and experience other countries but I also love coming back here, at least so far it has been like that. and you should definitely write more about those travel/foreign work stories. I love reading those.
