Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.

Christmas Eve arrived, Santa came, and Christmas is starting to leave our home! What better moment to sit down and reflect upon the festivity? This Christmas was spent in mild weather with plus degrees, so no white Christmas for Helsinki. This year, we decorated our home for Christmas on November 28. We merely sent electronic season greetings. My daughter had 4 Advent calendars - the scouting calendar, a Moomin calendar, the reusable Christmas calendar, and a Kinder surprise calendar. I had an Oreo calendar, and my hubby had the traditional chocolate calendar with an image from Finnish Mauri Kunnas' legendary Christmas movie & book Santa Claus and the Magic Drum. My 4-year-old daughter liked our habit of opening the calendars in the morning so much that she asked on Christmas Day if we can continue with the habit even though Christmas Eve was over. Christmas Eve festivities started with watching the Snowman and Christmas Peace declarations. Christmas Eve was spent in the company of my big sister's family and my hubby's mother & little brother. On the Eve of Christmas Eve, we visited my parents' graves. On Christmas Day, we went for Christmas lunch at my sister's place. We enjoyed the Christmas sauna yesterday on St. Stephen's Day. Here are 20 questions about Christmas that you can get inspired to answer as well. I was inspired by Diiskuneiti to answer them.

Jouluaatto & -pukki tuli ja joulu alkaa hiljalleen olemaan ohi meidän perheessä! Näin ollen tämä on hyvä hetki pysähtyä pohtimaan joulua. Tänä vuonna koristelimme joulun kotiimme marraskuun 28. päivänä. Lähetimme pelkästään sähköiset joulukortit. Tyttärelläni oli neljä joulukalenteria: partiolaisten joulukalenteri, Muumikalenteri, uudelleenkäytettävä kalenteri ja Kinder -joulukalenteri. Itselläni oli Oreo -kalenteri ja miehelläni perinteinen suklaakalenteri Mauri Kunnauksen kuvituksella. Jouluaatto alkoi perinteisesti katselemalla Lumiukkoa ja joulurauhan julistusta TV:stä. Vietimme jouluaaton siskoni perheen, anoppini ja mieheni pikkuveljen kanssa. Jouluaaton aattona kävimme vanhempieni haudoilla. Joulupäivänä kävimme joululounaalla siskoni luona. It's Christmas, what are you currently reading? / On joulun aika, mitä luet? 

With a two-month-old at home, I really don't have time to read. I didn't even read that much when I merely had a preschooler at home, so you can just imagine how much less time I have now. My most recent book purchase, however, is Magiska möten Italien runt (direct translation: Magical encounters all around Italy). I really want to read this book. The author, Anne Levlin, loves Italy as much as I do!

Koska poikani on niin pieni, vasta kaksikuukautinen, niin minulla ei niinkään ole aikaa kirjoille. Ostin kuitenkin hiljattain yhden kirjan: Magiska möten Italien runt (Anne Levlin), ja toivon, että ehdin sen lukemaan ensi vuoden aikana!

Favorite Christmas song? / Lempi joululaulu? 

I do like Wham's Last Christmas, I mean, it's a classic, but this year I discovered two playlists on Spotify that I really have loved. One comes from Sweden, and the other one comes from, yes, Italy again. The playlists are called Svenska julsånger and Natale italiano. A new Christmas song that I really fell for this year is Swedish Jobe's En jul med dig. My hubby's favorite is Mer jul by Swedish Adolphson & Falk.

Tykkään Whamin Last Christmas -biisistä, sehän on klassikko, mutta tänä vuonna suosikkisoittolistani Spotifyssa olivat Svenska julsånger ja Natale italiano. Molemmat kuvaavat hyvin musiikkimakuani. Uusi joululaulu, johon olen tänä vuonna ihastunut, on ruotsalaisen Joben En jul med dig. Mieheni suosikkijoululaulu oli tänä vuonna Mer jul ruotsalaisen Adolphson & Falkin laulamana.

 

Do you participate in any charity causes during Christmas? / Osallistutko joulun aikaan hyväntekeväisyyskeräyksiin?

Yes! I always support the scouting movement and Saint Lucia charity fundraisings, as they are close to my heart.

When do you open the presents? / Milloin avaatte lahjat?

Usually on Christmas Eve, after dinner. However, now for two years, we have changed this pattern a little bit - due to the children. Last year, Santa Claus visited us on Christmas Eve during the day, so we opened one present with him present. Also this year, Santa Claus visited us during the day, so one present was opened at that point. This year, since my son is so little, we also opened the rest of the presents earlier than usual, already after lunch on Christmas Eve. He needs a calm evening so that we get to sleep at least some during the night. 

Yleensä jouluaattona syömisen jälkeen siinä klo 17-19 välillä. Nyt kahtena vuotena olemme hieman joutuneet säätämään tämän perinteen kanssa, lasten takia. Viime vuonna joulupukki tuli käymään keskellä päivää, joten silloin avattiin yksi lahja. Myös tänä vuonna, pukki tuli keskellä päivää, joten hänen läsnäollessa avattiin yksi lahja. Tänä vuonna loputkin lahjoista avattiin jo jouluaaton lounaan jälkeen, koska poikani on niin pieni vielä. Hän tarvitsee rauhallisen illan, jotta saadaan edes hieman nukuttua yön aikana. 

Can you name all of Santa's reindeers? / Osaatko nimetä kaikki joulupukin porot?

I actually couldn't, until this Christmas. My daughter asked me about them, so we learned them together in Swedish this Christmas. Up 'til now, I only knew Rudolph. Now I know that they are Rudolf, Blixten, Åska, Tindra, Stjärna, Komet och Dunder.

Favorite Christmas movie? / Suosikki jouluelokuva?

This is easy as I love movies, and grew up watching them! No other movie has affected me as much as Home alone 2: Lost in New York. I have even added turtle doves to our Christmas tree due to this movie!

What Christmas tradition do you look forward to the most this year? / Mitä joulun traditiota odotat eniten tänä vuonna?

This year, the most important thing about the whole festivity was that it was my son's first Christmas. Spending Christmas as a family of four was something new & exciting!

Tänä vuonna tärkein asia oli, että kyse oli poikani ensimmäisestä joulusta. Oli erilaista ja jännittävää viettää joulu nelihenkisenä perheenä.

Real or artificial Christmas tree? / Oikea vai muovinen joulukuusi?

My mother always had a real Christmas tree, and we decorated it on Christmas Eve. When she passed away, and we started a family with my hubby, we had to invent our own Christmas traditions. In our home, we bring out the Christmas tree already at the end of November, so we have an artificial Christmas tree, and I couldn't love it more! It's something that lasts for many Christmases, and we get the scents of Christmas from scented candles and seasonal flowers instead of the tree. Äidilläni oli aina aito kuusi, ja koristelimme sen jouluaattona. Kun hän menehtyi, ja perustimme perheen mieheni kanssa, niin saimme keksiä omat jouluperinteemme. Meillä joulukuusi koristellaan jo marraskuun lopulla, joten meillä on tekokuusi jota rakastan! Se on monivuotinen kuusi ja joulutuoksu tulee meillä tuoksukynttilöistä ja joulukukista. Favorite Christmas treat? / Kaikkien aikojen suosikkisi jouluherkuista?

Fish roe (with sour cream, white pepper, red onion), beef tongue (my mother's recipe - my sister makes this for me nowadays), mushroom salad, and salmon.

Mäti (smetanan, valkopippurin ja punasipulin kanssa), lohi, sienisalaatti ja naudan kieli (äitini erikoisuus, nykyään siskoni tekee sen minulle).

What's better: to give or receive presents?  / Kumpi on parempaa, lahjojen antaminen vai saaminen?

I love finding the perfect presents and wrapping them up. That is why I would say that I prefer giving presents. It's lovely to bring joy to others and see their faces when they open presents that make them surprised & happy.

Rakastan lahjojen hankkimista ja niiden paketoimista. Siksi sanoisin, että antaminen on parempaa kuin saaminen. On niin ihana ilahduttaa toisia ja nähdä ne ilmeet, kun toinen saa jotain mieleistä, josta on aidosti iloinen. 

What colors make your Christmas? / Mitkä värit tekevät joulusi? 

White, forest green, silver and gold + some black details.

Valkoinen, metsänvihreä, hopea ja kulta + joitakin mustia yksityiskohtia. 

How do you wrap your presents? / Millainen lahjojen paketoija olet?

Usually, the presents that I give are wrapped in papers of the same colors as my Christmas in general: white, green, or metallics. I love to add details from the forest: pine cones and/or branches.

Pakettini ovat yleensä hyvin minun näköisiä, eli värimaailma on sama kuin muutenkin käytän jouluna: käytän valkoista, vihreää tai metalliväristä lahjapaperia. Lisään paketteihin mielelläni metsäisiä yksityiskohtia: käpyjä ja/tai havuja.

How does your Christmas sweater look like? / Miltä perinteinen joulupaitasi näyttää?

I always wear a dress on Christmas Eve, this year it was this sequin dress.

Minulla on aina aattona juhlamekko. Tänä vuonna päälläni oli tämä paljettimekko.

Best Christmas memory from your childhood? / Ihanin joulumuistosi lapsuudesta?

Everything about Christmas reminds me of my beloved passed mother because she hardcore loved Christmas. I remember getting once a big soft toy, a white seal that was almost as big as I was, for Christmas and it was my favorite soft toy for many, many years! I remember that I personally didn't like Santa Claus that much, as I thought he was scary. I also remember the moment when I realized that he wasn't real. My beloved passed father went out with the garbage and returned with the same plastic bag filled with presents. I said to him: "But dad, do you really think that I'm that stupid? Of course, I saw that you went out with that same bag!"

Kaikki joulussa muistuttaa minua äidistäni, koska hän rakasti joulua ja monella tapaa hän teki joulun minulle ja siskolleni. Muistan lahjoista erityisesti ison valkoisen pehmohylkeen, se oli suosikkini vuosia! Muistan, etten pitänyt joulupukista koska pelkäsin häntä. Muistan myös hetken, kun keksin, ettei pukkia ole. Rakas edesmennyt isäni kävi roskien kanssa ulkona, ja palasi saman muovipussin kanssa sisään. Muistan sanoneeni isälleni: "Mutta isä, luuletko oikeasti, etten huomannut kassia? En todellakaan ole niin tyhmä!"

Have you ever made a gingerbread house? / Oletko koskaan tehnyt piparkakkutaloa?

We used to make these with my mother, but I haven't made one without her. Every Christmas, however, we do make gingerbread cookies with my daughter.

Taloja tehtiin aina äitini kanssa. En ole niitä tehnyt ilman häntä. Joka vuosi teemme kylläkin tyttäreni kanssa pipareita.

It's Christmas Eve, what's in your glass? / On jouluaatto, mitä kupissasi/lasissasi on?

Always Coca Cola. I might also drink beer, wine, mulled wine, and coffee.

Aina pitää cokista olla jouluna. Saatan kyllä juoda myös olutta, viiniä, glögiä ja kahvia jouluna.

If you could only buy one present this year, who would receive it? / Jos voisit ostaa ainoastaan yhden lahjan tänä vuonna, kuka sen saisi?

What Christmas tradition do you not continue? / Mistä jouluperinteestä et pidä tai minkä skippaat vuosittain?

I like the Christmas porridge tradition, but I would be the only one to eat the porridge so I haven't continued the tradition in our home.

Tykkään itse joulupuurosta, mutta olisin ainoa puuron syöjä meillä - joten en ole joulupuuroperinnettä jatkanut.

Have you spent Christmas somewhere else than in Finland? / Oletko viettänyt joulua muualla kuin kotimaassasi?

I haven't spent Christmas Eve or Day somewhere else, but I have lived in Italy during the holidays. I have always returned home for those two days because as I mentioned, my mother made Christmas - the holiday was extremely important to her.

En ole jouluaattoa tai -päivää viettänyt muualla. Olen asunut Italiassa joulun aikaan, mutta aina palannut pyhiksi kotiin koska äidilleni joulu oli niin tärkeä.

White or colorful season lights? / Valkoiset vai värikkäät jouluvalot?

Definitely white. In my daughter's room, however, they are the colors of the rainbow because she loves colors. 

Ehdottomasti valkoiset. Tyttäreni huoneessa on kuitenkin sateenkaariväriset valot koska hän on tällä hetkellä hulluna väreihin.
