5 things to do in Christmas time Helsinki with a child

Helsinki, 3 degrees

Christmas doesn't come from a store, maybe Christmas perhaps means a little bit more.

Like many, I think this is one of the most magical times of the year! Not merely because of the upcoming Christmas celebration and holiday, but above all because of the atmospheric mood Helsinki is in at the moment! There are lanterns, candles, and lights everywhere, and the city has a scent of mulled wine and gingerbread cookies. In most places, there is cozy music in the background. Here follows a list of 5 free things to do in the city with a child if you're in town during December month!

Helsinki Christmas Market / Tuomaan Markkinat

This is a classic! The Helsinki Christmas Market is the oldest and most beautiful outdoor Christmas market in Helsinki. The stalls of the atmospheric Christmas market on Senate Square are full of unique gifts sold by the craftsmen, food suppliers, and artists themselves. The restaurant yard treats visitors to wintertime classics like Christmas porridge, reindeer meat pies, Karelian pasty /style rice porridge balls, rye churros with licorice and lots of mulled wine. The heart of the Helsinki Christmas Market is the beloved old-time carousel that is free of charge. The queue went fast, and my daughter loved it! Open 'til December 22.

Tämä on klassikko! Tuomaan Markkinat on Helsingin kaunein ja vanhin ulkoilmassa järjestettävä joulutori. Senaatintorin tunnelmallisen joulutorin kojuista löytyvät persoonalliset lahjat käsityöläisten, muotoilijoiden ja ruokatoimijoiden itse myyminä. Ravintolapihan toimijat hemmottelevat kävijöitä talvisilla klassikoilla, kuten joulupuurolla, porolihapiirakalla, ruischurroilla, riisipiirakkapalloilla ja blineillä sekä maustetuilla glögeillä. Tuomaan Markkinoiden sydämessä sykkii kävijöiden rakastama vanhanajan karuselli, joka on maksuton! Jono eteni nopeasti, ja tyttäreni piti kovasti tästä karusellista! Markkinat jatkuvat 22. päivään asti.

Sneak into the yellow gate and revel in the atmosphere of the 1860s in the oldest surviving wooden house in #Helsinki! Recently, I visited the #BurghersHouse in town and fell in love! 💛 Have you been here yet? There not even an admission, so hurry up! It's now open before Christmas 1.12.2019-20.12.2019 Wed-Fri 13-18, Sat-Sun 11-17, 21.12.2019-6.1.2020 Wed-Sun 11-17! At the Burgher’s House Museum, you can experience everyday life and living in a house of the bourgeois in the #Kruununhaka district of the 1860s and 70s. The oldest wooden residential building in central Helsinki is decorated as the home of #AlexanderWickholm’s family, who owned the house starting from 1859. The buildings tell their own vivid story of a way of life from the past. The floors are made of wide wooden boards and the ceilings and doorways are endearingly crooked. Every room has a fireplace. The walls have been restored to their 19th century surface treatments using patterns found while uncovering the different layers of the house. The foyer and the kitchen are splash-painted, the hall and kitchen chamber have painted wallpaper and the room in the separate building in the yard has printed “French” wallpaper 😍 #myhelsinki #visithelsinki #architecturepicture #mydesignhelsinki #architecture_best #architecture_lovers #architecturephoto #architecture_minimal #helsinkilove #helsinkiofficial #igershelsinki #architecturedetails #architectureilike #architectureanddesign #architecturewatch #architecturehunter #architecturephotos #instablogitfinland #instablogit @instablogitfinland #finland #ruiskumestarintalo #sprutmästarensgård

Central Park of Helsinki / Helsingin Keskuspuisto

Traversing Helsinki from south to north, the Central Park of Helsinki offers excellent opportunities for outdoor sports and recreation. Nature in Central Park is varied, with many different types of terrain and species of birds and mammals. The Central Park begins in the south at Töölönlahti Bay in the middle of the city and ends in Haltiala and the River Vantaa on the northern border of Helsinki. Covering a thousand hectares, the Central Park is ten kilometers in length and an excellent representative of the rich and varied nature in the southern coastal area. In Central Park, you can feel the rhythm of the seasons, with their changing colors, light, and smells. It is a place where people go for an outing, play, do fitness training or sports, tend their allotment gardens, study nature, and just relax.

My daughter's favorite spot is the Ruskeasuo Equestrian Hall. The construction of it, also called the Olympic Manège, began in the late 1930s when Finland was chosen as the host of the 1940 Summer Olympics. However, it wasn’t until 1952 when the games were finally held in Helsinki that the horses taking part in the Olympics finally arrived at the stables. Nowadays, the stables next to the equestrian hall house Finland’s oldest horse riding school, Keskustalli, as well as Helsinki’s only police horses.

Tyttäreni suosikkikohta on Ruskeasuon ratsastushalli. Kyseinen halli eli Olympiamaneesin rakentaminen alkoi 1930 -luvun lopussa, kun Suomen piti saada 1940 kesäolympialaiset järjestettäväkseen. Kesäolympialaisiin osallistuvat hevoset tulivat talleille 1952, kun kisat viimein pidettiin Helsingissä. Nykyään maneesin viereisillä hevostalleilla toimii Suomen vanhin ratsastuskoulu Keskustalli. Siellä asuvat myös Helsingin ainoat poliisihevoset.

Stockmann Department Store's Christmas window display / Stockmannin satuikkuna

The Christmas window display was unveiled to the delight of city dwellers for the first time in 1949. For many children and adults alike, one of the highlights during the long wait for Christmas is Stockmann’s fairy tale window display. Everyone is anxiously waiting to see what kind of world will be displayed in the window this year and what characters it will feature. Stockmann’s fairy tale window is special because of its moving characters. It sometimes even has interactive action buttons on the window, which can be pushed to change the action in the display. For example, the lights of a house might be lit. The skillfully designed window displays are a delight for the whole family.

Christmas season light orienteering / spotting in the city center / Jouluvalojen suunnistus / löytöretki

Already 2 years ago, I shared on the blog a great list of Christmas season lights in the city! Helsinki is always beautiful, but for the Christmas season, it dresses up in the most wonderful lights! Knowing a little bit about their background, thanks to my job, I couldn't be prouder of the people behind the lights - my city has never looked as pretty for Christmas as it does during this time of year! The Christmas feeling is so tangible that it's simply lovely to walk around the downtown area of Helsinki this time of year. Have a look at my personal hints on what places not to miss!

Jo pari vuotta sitten tein listan blogin puolella kaupungin jouluvaloista! Helsinki on aina kaunis, mutta jouluksi kaupunki pukeutuu valoon, mikä tekee siitä entistä upeamman! Koska tiedän työni puolesta hieman valojen taustatyöstä, en voisi olla ylpeämpi kotikaupungistani - mielestäni kaupunki näyttää niin hyvältä jouluna! Joulutunnelman oikein tuntee ja on ihanaa kävellä keskustan alueella valoja ihmettelemässä. Katso viisi vinkkiäni jouluiseen Helsinkiin linkin takaa!

What kind of things do you like to do in December with your little ones?

Mitä tykkäät joulukuussa tehdä lasten kanssa?

What's your opinion?
