Design Museum / Designmuseo: Secret Universe COMPANY: Aamu Song & Johan Olin

Design Museum’s main exhibition displays work by the COMPANY design studio from over the past ten years. Since 2007, designer duo Aamu Song (born 1974) and Johan Olin (born 1974) have traveled around the world, seeking in a folkloric spirit traditional crafts techniques and manufacturing skills. On their travels, Song and Olin have come to know workshops and master craftspeople in Japan, Russia, Mexico, and other countries. These trips have resulted in art objects, clothing, accessories, and furniture made together with local masters of crafts. Through their work, Song and Olin want to direct attention to the endangered nature of crafts skills and the unsustainable of present-day consumer culture and to offer alternatives to consumerism. This exhibition will present Song and Olin’s artistic process as a whole from traveling to meeting master craftspeople and from correspondence to production and the completed objects.

Aamu Song (s. 1974) & Johan Olin (s. 1974) ovat helsinkiläisiä suunnittelijoita ja COMPANY-yrityksen perustajia. He työskentelevät taiteilijoina, muotoilijoina sekä tuottajina. COMPANY on palkittu Muotoilun valtionpalkinnolla 2010 sekä Helsinki Design Awardsin Kansainvälistymis-palkinnolla vuonna 2018. Suunnittelijoita kiehtoo eri maiden perinteinen tuotevalmistusprosessi, jonka oppeja he käyttävät omissa projekteissaan. COMPANY:n matkat ovat suuntautuneet Suomen ja eri maiden tehtaisiin ja pienvalmistajien työhuoneisiin. Matkat ovat antaneet uudenlaista perspektiiviä perinteisiin tuotteisiin sekä materiaalien käyttöön. COMPANY:n suunnittelu perustuu tehtaiden ja tuottajien tarinoihin ja toimintaan. Se on heidän salaisuutensa.

What I loved: The main hall at the Design Museum felt like a movie scene, it was really well-made and I could have spent hours in simply one hall, admiring all the details in it! I took my daughter to the exhibition, and after seeing it, she wanted a wooden toy. We couldn't find one at the museum shop (they were sold out) so we headed to Artek and bought a timeless golden church bell - so beautiful!

Mistä erityisesti pidin: Pääsali tuntui kuin olisi astunut elokuvan sisään, se oli niin hyvin toteutettu ja olisin voinut viettää tuntikausia yhdessä salissa! Salissa oli todella paljon yksityiskohtia! Otin tyttäreni mukaan näyttelyyn ja nähtyään sen, hän toivoi puulelua. Emme löytäneet sellaista museokaupasta (olivat loppuunmyytyjä), joten kävimme Artekin kaupassa ostamassa hänelle ajattoman kultaisen ääntä pitävän lelun - se on niin kaunis!

Kunsthalle Helsinki / Taidehalli: Ugo Rondinone - everyone gets lighter

Kunsthalle Helsinki opens its autumn season with everyone gets lighter, the Finnish solo debut of internationally acclaimed Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone (b. 1964). The exhibition is organized in conjunction with the Helsinki Festival. The centerpiece of the exuberantly colored exhibition is a vocabulary of solitude from 2014, a meditative installation of sculpted clowns in passive poses. The installation expresses the artist’s characteristic straddling between joy and sorrow: clowns are traditionally meant to be funny and entertaining, but in Rondinone’s exhibition, they are somber and thoughtful, almost melancholy. The hyper-realistic clowns are of different genders and ethnic backgrounds. Collectively, they form a ‘day in the life’ portrait of a single confined person narrated through 45 different mundane activities.

Helsingin Taidehallin syyskauden avaa kansainvälisesti tunnustetun Ugo Rondinonen (s. 1964) näyttely everyone gets lighter. Sveitsiläisen taiteilijan ensimmäinen yksityisnäyttely Suomessa toteutetaan yhteistyössä Helsingin juhlaviikkojen kanssa. Taidehallin värikylläisen näyttelyn keskiössä nähdään meditatiivinen vocabulary of solitude -installaatio (yksinäisyyden sanasto, 2014), joka muodostuu passiivisissa asennoissa olevista klovneista. Teoksessa nähdään taiteilijalle tyypillinen tasapainottelu ilon ja surun välillä: perinteisesti viihdyttävä ja hauska klovni onkin Rondinonen näyttelyssä rauhallinen ja pohdiskeleva, lähes melankolinen. Hyperrealistiset veistokset edustavat eri sukupuolia ja etnisiä taustoja. Installaatio on kuin muotokuva yhden ihmisen päivästä 45 arkisen toiminnon kautta.

What I loved: Having been scared of clowns for a long time, due to seeing a scene of a James Bond movie with clowns by accident already at the age of 4, I felt a physical sensation when I entered the halls with clowns. After a while, I got used to them and started to appreciate all their similarities but also differences. Somehow, this exhibition gave a lot of energy to me, even though I also found it to be melancholic.

Mistä erityisesti pidin: Pelkäsin pitkään pellejä koska näin vahingossa osan James Bond -elokuvasta ollessani neljävuotias, joten tämä näyttely sai aikaan fyysisen reaktion itsessäni kun astelin ensimmäistä kertaa pellejen sekaan. Hetken päästä totuin heihin ja aloin tutkimaan mitä heillä oli yhteistä, mutta myös mikä erotti heidät toisistaan. Näyttely antoi minulle valtavan paljon energiaa, vaikka pidin sitä myös surumielisenä.

The Coexistence exhibition looks at the relationship between humans and nature. Environmental issues, nature, and human coexistence with other organisms are topics of long-standing interest in art, but they have recently come into sharper focus amid the eco-crisis of the 2000s.

Yhteiseloa-kokoelmanäyttely tutkii ihmisen suhdetta ympäristöön toisten lajien näkökulmasta. Ympäristökysymykset, luonto sekä ihmisen ja muiden elollisten rinnakkaiselo ovat kiinnostaneet taiteilijoita pitkään, mutta erityisesti 2000-luvulla aiheista on tullut päivänpolttavia.

What I loved: I liked many of the pieces in this exhibition, but there was one that won my heart! Outi Pieski's Our Land, Our Running Colors. It's made by shawl fringe threads of the traditional Sámi dress, gákti, that have been tied to rowan branches hung from the ceiling. The artist Outi Pieski describes the work as a three-dimensional drawing of the Lapland fells. The threads are translucent, for the scenery is so familiar to the artist that she knows exactly what lies behind each hill. Many of Pieski’s installations feature scarf fringes tied to branches using a traditional Sámi handicraft technique (duodji). The ritualistic process of tying the threads is a key part of the work.

Mistä erityisesti pidin: Monet näyttelyn teoksista tekivät vaikutuksen, mutta eniten pidin yhdestä teoksesta! Outi Pieskin Meidän maa, meidän väreillä. Kuorittuihin pihlajantaimiin on sidottu gáktin eli saamenpuvun huivin hapsuja. Taiteilija Outi Pieskin mukaan teos on kolmiulotteinen piirustus, joka kuvaa hänelle tärkeää tunturimaisemaa. Hapsuista muodostuvat tunturit kuultavat toistensa läpi, sillä maisema on taiteilijalle niin tuttu, että hän tietää, mikä näkymä seuraavan tunturin takaa avautuu. Pieski on käyttänyt huivin hapsuja monissa teoksissaan. Hapsujen solmimisessa taiteilija noudattaa duodjin eli saamelaisen käsityöperinteen tekniikkaa. Teoksen tekotapa, rituaalinen käsityön tekeminen, on tärkeä osa teosta.
