15 x wedding details, part 1

Helsinki, 9 degrees

You are my today and all of my tomorrows.

Three weeks ago our magical day occured. A day that some might say I had been waiting for my whole life (as I take pride in belonging to the girls who daydreamed of my wedding already as a child), others everything in between three (since our engagement) to eight years (since we met and started dating). Be as it may, the actual preparations and planning for this special day started about one year prior to the wedding. In this first wedding blog post, I'll share with you the first 7 out of 15 details from our day. The photos of this blog post were taken by our talented wedding photographer Niki Strbian.

The first thing we decided were the theme colors: white, burgundy & navy blue.

Navy was a given choice, as we immediately knew that we wanted a venue next to the sea - as the sea is very important to both of us.

Näin, koska meri on meille molemmille hyvin rakas.

White was also a given choice, as I knew that I wanted to dress in white, but also because when we were planning, we were all the time thinking about the life cycle of the wedding decorations. We didn't want a disposable wedding. White is one of the key colors in our home, so we thought it was important to have at least one color that would live on in our home. In fact, all the white decorations will continue to play a part in our lives, in our home.

The third color burgundy was chosen as it's a fall color we both like.

Viininpunainen valikoitui kolmanneksi teemaväriksi koska pidämme siitä syysvärinä.

Themes / Teemat

We actually decided to play with several themes: the most visible theme was the setting - the sea. However Italy, which is a country very close to my heart, also had a big role - in the Save the dates, Invitations, food, some music, my veil and it was also our honeymoon destination. Besides the sea and Italy, leaves and flowers were also present. Leaves, as the surname of my husband, and now also me, is Rundlöf, which in Swedish means "round leaf". Eucalyptus leaves were the best, as they are naturally round. You can also find some of them sprinkled around my blog (e.g. in my post signature) for the same reason. Flowers are super important for me, so it was a given that they would play a big role at the wedding. Some golf (a dear hobby of my new hubby) elements were even visible at the venue.

Save the date & invitations / Save the date & kutsut

Our Save the date card that was sent on Valentine's Day, and our Invitation card that was sent in June were both made by Aquarela Printables from Venice, Italy. I found the company on Etsy. Our invitation card had 3 +1 pages (one Invitation page, and two Wedding Information pages + a R.S.V.P. page). We printed our invitations at local printing company Grano.

-kortista. Painatimme kutsut Granolla.

The venue / Hääjuhlapaikka

As I mentioned, we were looking for a seaside venue from the beginning. We also wanted to have our ceremony already at the venue, and be able to depart from the venue by boat. Finally, we wished for Italian food in cocktail form. For all of these reasons, we chose sailing & yacht club NJK's wooden club house on Koivusaari Island in Helsinki as our wedding venue.

Kuten mainitsin, niin etsimme merellistä hääjuhlapaikkaa jo aivan hääsunnittelun alusta. Toivoimme paikan, joka voisi myös toimia vihkimispaikkana. Tämän lisäksi halusimme juhlapaikan, josta pystyimme lähtemään veneellä. Ja lopulta toivoimme italialaista ruokaa cocktail-muodossa. Näistä syistä hääjuhlapaikaksi valikoitui pursiseura NJK:n puinen klubitalo Helsingin Koivusaaressa.

Cocktail stations & food / Cocktail -asemat & ruoka

From the beginning of our wedding planning, we knew that we didn't want to have a traditional seated wedding. So we didn't have our own table for two. Instead, we quite quickly came up with the idea to have a 1½-hour-long standing cocktail reception. Once we had decided on that, I thought that it would be nice to build "our path" by adding a story about us to each cocktail station. In the end, our path was made up by six highlights from our relationship so far: the first date, our first rental home, our first owner-occupied home, our engagement, our daughter's birth and our wedding. The stations were numbered so there was a chronological order, but of course the guests could choose how to eat the cocktail bites. The food was Italy-themed: we had crostini and with different toppings, grissini with different sauces & mixtures, chicken skewers, and salads. We also had a cheese platter throughout the party. The food came from NJK's own catering company called Min Krog.

From the beginning of our wedding planning, we knew that we didn't want soap bubbles or rice at the end of our fall wedding ceremony. While looking through ideas, I quite quickly fell for the idea of having bell and ribbon wands, as they were so fun & easy to personalize! Our wands were found on Etsy, and they were custom-made by Braided Together.

Hula hoops / Hulavanteet

A year ago, during design & furniture fair Habitare, I saw, together with one of my bridesmaids something that I knew that I wanted at our wedding: decorated hula hoops! We saw them once again at the wedding event Häämessut at Vanha Satama in January, and after that we started to realize this dream. Each bridesmaid decorated one hoop, so they were named after their makers: so in addition to the actual bridesmaids, we had another Elina, Eeva and Nilla present at the wedding! The hoops functioned both as general decorations and frames for our photo booth and family & friend portraits at the party.

What are the details you remember from wedding you've been to? What details are vital to a wedding, in your opinion?

Mitkä yksityiskohdat sinä muistat häistä, joissa olet ollut? Mitkä ovat mielestäsi tärkeimmät yksityiskohdat häissä?

What's your opinion?

  1. I haven't been to many weddings. I'm very introverted and not much of a party person. The one thing I remember most was my oldest brother's wedding, his wife threw the bouquet and it bounced off the ceiling.
