Medal of General Valour

Helsinki, 2 degrees

If I could bronze my love, it’d be worthy of a silver medal.

Despite the fact that we experienced a large amount of snow in Helsinki directly after the passing of my mother, in the beginning of November, I think it's safe to say that we'll have a black Christmas (a Christmas without snow that is) this year. For me, it's fine, as this will be a different Christmas in so many ways. My baby girl's first Christmas & the first Christmas without my mother. Instead of dreading and pushing off Christmas, I've decided to face it, in honor of my mother. After all, it was her favorite holiday of the year. However, in order to be able to do so, I've made sure that it's clear to all that my mother is with me all the time. This Christmas, and probably on every special occasion from here onwards, my mother will be visible on my heart.

My way of honoring her is to wear a Medal of General Valour throughout the holiday that I have had made in loving memory. Some of you might remember that I have a similar medal from before with Tove Jansson's photo on it. Needless to say, this custom-made medal is more personal as I've chosen the photo for it, and also the colors of its ribbon and pendant. The medal is Finnish designer Katariina Guthwert's most well-known design piece of jewelry, and I absolutely love it!

Minun tapani kunnioittaa äitini muistoa on käyttää yleisurhoollisuusmitalia joulupyhien ajan.

Its ribbon is blue and white, as my mother's favorite flowers: the blue cornflower & white rose (that I mentioned in this earlier blog post). My mother was also a proud Finn, partly thanks to the military history of my father, so I like the fact that the ribbon has the same colors that the Finnish flag has. The photo of her is a golden oldie from when she still went to school. I've always loved that photo, and even prior to her passing, I carried it with me in my wallet, which actually is a black leather pouch that I inherited from my mother - way before her passing. The natural choice for the pendant was to pick a rose. No matter what I'll wear for Christmas, this medal will be the highlight of my outfit.

Valokuva on mustavalkoinen kaunotar äitini kouluajoilta.

Do you have a person in your life that you think that deserves a medal? Any role models? Happy Holidays!

Ketä sinä haluasit muistaa mitalilla? Onko sinulla joku roolimalli? Hyvää Joulua!

What's your opinion?

  1. That is really a beautiful thought and medal... really well done, it's so meaningful! I loved the rose, as she loved it too, and the photo and ribbon are so beautiful! When my beloved ones passed away together, I made a bracelet with items that they loved and names on silver hearts entwined. So on special occasions, I wear it. Everyone has a different way, and for some time it was very painful for me to see their pictures. So the names were better for me, at the time. I hope you have a nice Christmas with your baby daughter - no matter what, your mother will be always with you, you are right!
