5 favorite spots in New York City

Helsinki, 7 degrees

Give me such shows--give me the streets of Manhattan!

It's now been about two weeks since I returned to Helsinki from New York City, where I spent my autumn holiday. In this blog post, I decided to share with you readers my all-time favorite spots in New York City. They all have a special place in my heart as the moments I experienced in them were priceless.

The Village

Greenwich Village, often called simply the Village, was for sure my favorite district of Manhattan! It's known mainly as an artist haven, and many big names, like Alec Baldwin, Anna Wintour, Edward Norton, Emma Stone, Jessica Chastain, Julia Roberts, Julianne Moore, Leonardo DiCaprio, Marc Jacobs, Robert De Niro, Sarah Jessica Parker, Tom Cruise, Susan Sarandon and so on, has lived or live in the district. I can understand why - the buildings were beautiful, and the district didn't have skyscrapers but lower buildings, mostly with three to six floors. I also found the district to be very verdant. It was a quiet district as well, so it was easy to forget that one was in New York City!

Greenwich Village tunnetaan jo pelkällä the Village -lempinimellä ja on ehdottomasti suosikkikaupunginosani Manhattanilla! Alueella asuu paljon taiteilijoita, muotoilijoita ja näyttelijöitä, kuten esimerkiksi Alec Baldwin, Anna Wintour, Edward Norton, Emma Stone, Jessica Chastain, Julia Roberts, Julianne Moore, Leonardo DiCaprio, Marc Jacobs, Robert De Niro, Sarah Jessica Parker, Tom Cruise, Susan Sarandon ym. Ymmärrän hyvin miksi - alueen 3-6-kerroksiset rakennukset ovat todella kauniita! Vihreä kaupunginosa on myös rauhallinen, joten huomasin itse unohtavani alueella olevani Nykissä!

We visited the sets of Friends and Sex & the City. You can see how happy I was when I found Carrie's steps! When we entered the district, I had no idea that it was where I was going to be proposed to, but that is what happened, right on Perry Street, so you can understand why this district will forever have a special place in my heart!

Kävimme katsomassa Frendit ja Sinkkuelämää -sarjojen kuvauspaikkoja. Huomaat varmasti miten iloinen olin, kun löysin Carrien portaat. En aavistanut, että kyseinen kaupunginosa toimisi myös kosinnan tapahtumapaikkana, mutta näin siinä kävi, keskellä Perry Streetiä, joten voit varmasti ymmärtää miksi kaupunginosalla on tärkeä paikka sydämessäni!

Staten Island Ferry

As a girl, who's grown up next to the sea, I immediately knew that I wanted to explore New York City also from the sea! According to me, it's a great service of New York City that the Staten Island Ferry is free of charge, so we headed to it on a sunny day to enjoy the views! It was very special to pass by the Statue of Liberty as well as Ellis Island and be reminded of how what an important role New York City has played in the worldly history. I heard even Finns entered New York City through Ellis Island during wartimes in the hope of a better life. The ferry ride took about 30 minutes in one direction.

Merta rakastavaa tyttöä voi aina etsiä meren läheisyydestä. Koska olen tottunut Helsingin merenläheisyyteen, halusin ehdottomasti myös kokea Nykin mereltä käsin. Mielestäni on huippua, että New Yorkin kaupunki tarjoaa lauttamatkan Staten Islandin saarelle! Saari muistuttaa Nykin historiasta. Olen kuullut, että jopa suomalaisia on Ellis Islandin vastaanottokeskuksen läpi kulkenut, kun sota-aikoina etsittiin parempaa elämää. Lauttamatka kesti puoli tuntia yhteen suuntaan.

Grand Central Terminal

There is something about beautiful train stations, what can I tell you. Not many cities have invested on a central station building, but the ones that have (including Helsinki), sure know what they've done. Train stations are the set of interesting meetings and encounters. I could have spent hours in this atmospheric building, as it had so many stunning details! It truly is grand!

Central Park

Since 1/3 of Helsinki are green areas, of course, this Helsinkian wanted to explore New York City's Central Park as well. The view of skyscrapers combined with green trees was very special! Even though Helsinki actually has a bigger Central Park, the Helsinki Central Park, I was surprised over the fact how vivid this park was. We should also cherish our Central Park more, and visit it for picnics, art exhibitions, music performances and so on.

Brooklyn Bridge

Oh, bridges. Aren't they just lovely? For me, bridges are places where ideas flow and your soul is at peace. Brooklyn Bridge was a surprise: it sounded like a rollercoaster because it was made out of wood, like the rollercoaster we have at our amusement park Linnanmäki. It made the same like of squeaky sound, and I could actually see the sea under my feet - scary! Nevertheless, it offered breathtaking views and was a stunning example of New York City's architctural gems!

Oi, sillat. Maagiset sillat.
