The terrifying and edible beauty of Art Nouveau architecture.

We're having a wonderfully sunny autumn day in Helsinki - an ideal moment to continue my blog series about Helsinki's Art Nouveau / Jugend style architecture! Some time ago, I received a request for my blog. One of my followers on Instagram actually asked me to write about Helsinki's Art Nouveau and/or Jugend style architecture. I do get this wish quite a lot, and I was very surprised to notice that I had merely mentioned this incredible architectural style on the blog before - because it is for sure one of the things that I love the most about Helsinki: its high quantity of this castle-like buildings! Fourth up as an example of Art Nouveau / Jugend districts is Töölö!

Onpa tänään ihanan aurinkoinen syyspäivä, oiva hetki siis jatkaa Jugend -blogisarjaani! Jonkun aikaa sitten eräs Instagram -seuraaja toivoi Jugend -aiheista blogisarjaa.

Around the beginning of the 20th century, at the turn of the century really, Helsinki was expanding into the rocky Töölö district in the north. Architect Lars Sonck led a town planning campaign and the first town planning competition in Finland was organized for Töölö in 1899-1900. The planning was assigned to Sonck and Gustaf Nyström, and the plan was approved in 1906. Dozens of art nouveau houses sprang up near Pohjpinen Rautatiekatu and Arkadiankatu, and in the vicinity of the National Museum. Töölö is known for the fact that it has varying sizes and shapes in the street blocks as it follows the contours of the terrain. Some streets are short, winding, and narrow. Even today, many lose their way in this district for that very reason. As I grew up, I always dreamed of living in Töölö, and eventually did so for about 5 years while I studied, graduated, and entered work life. I remember loving the fact that my home at that time was only at a walking distance from Helsinki's city center. My first home with my husband was in fact in Töölö, so the district has a special meaning for me.

Maaperän muodot huomioiva asemakaava tekee alueesta erikoisen. Lopullisen kaavan laativat yhdessä kilpailun ensi vaiheessa menestyneet arkkitehdit Lars Sonck ja Gustaf Nyström. Kaupunginosa ilmentää hyvin 1900 -luvun alkupuolen kaupunkisuunnittelulle ominaisimpia tavoitteita: alueen asemakaava heijastelee orgaanisen kaupunkisuunnittelun ja rakentamistapa yhtenäisen kaupunkikuvan ihanteita. Kun itse kasvoin pienenä tyttönä Munkkiniemessä, unelmoin aina Töölöstä. Näin asuinkin kaupunginosassa n. 5 vuotta opiskelijana. Töölössä meillä on ensimmäinen yhteinen koti mieheni kanssa, joten kaupunginosalla on erityinen paikka sydämessäni.

Arkadiankatu

This street has always fascinated me, and one restaurant above all: Ateljé Finne. Sculptor Gunnar Finne designed his own studio in the rock foundation of the building in the 20's. Nervanderinkatu and Museokatu are also worth seeing!

Kyseinen katu on aina minua viehättänyt, ja yksi ravintola ylitse muiden on Ateljé Finne. Ravintolatilalla oma ainutlaatuinen historia kuvanveistäjä Gunnar Finnen 20-luvun työtilana. Myös Nervanderinkatu ja Museokatu ovat näkemisen arvoisia!

National Museum / Kansallismuseo

Many say that the most important buildings in Helsinki regarding Finnish identity are the National Museum & Theater. The National Museum was the result of an architectural competition that Gesellius-Lindgren-Saarinen Architects won in 1902. The castle-like museum opened for the public in 1916. It's national romantic and a true manifesto for art nouveau. It has stunning sculptural decorations and ornaments from Finnish folk traditions. I have to mention that it has the most stunning ceiling frescos!

Kansallismuseon rakentamisesta 1901-1902 järjestetyn suunnittelukilpailun voittanut arkkitehtitoimisto Gesellius, Lindgren ja Saarinen laati lopulliset piirustukset 1904. Varsinainen rakennustyö tehtiin 1906-1910. Sisustustyöt, piha-alueen viimeistely (istutukset ja kiveykset) ja muurin rakentaminen jatkuivat vuoteen 1916. Piharakennus valmistui 1917. Linnamainen museo avattiin yleisölle vaiheittain vuosina 1916, 1920 ja 1923. Arkkitehtien Herman Gesellius, Armas Lindgren ja Eliel Saarinen suunnittelema Suomen kansallismuseo, jonka ulkohahmoa leimaavat Suomen historiasta tutut arkkitehtuuriaiheet, on kivimuurin myötäilemällä puistomaisella tontilla. Museon kattofreskoa ei kannata missata!

The most impressive entrance hall ceiling and ceiling #frescoes in #Helsinki can be found at #NationalMuseumofFinland! They have the national epic #Kalevala theme, painted by #AkseliGallenKallela, which can be seen without an entrance fee! Have you seen them? 😍 The frescoes, painted in 1928, are based on the frescoes painted by Gallén-Kallela in the Finnish Pavilion of the Paris World Fair in 1900. #myhelsinki #visithelsinki #finnish #finnisharchitecture #mydesignhelsinki #archilovers #architecturelovers #architectureporn #architecturephotography #archidaily #helsinkilove #helsinkiofficial #igershelsinki #finland #scandinavianinterior #nordicstyle #sisustus #interior

To think that I live in a capital #city with this kind of #castles, well, that's just simply magical! 🏰 And you know what the best part is? I could simply walk in, no queues or lines, and show my #museum card and enjoy! ❤️. . What is your building-crush? Do you have a favorite, or somewhere you would like to visit? #ArtNouveau or #Jugend #architecture was interpreted in #Finland according to its own form of #NationalRomanticism. Some of the finest examples include the #NationalMuseumofFinland (1910) by famous architect trio #Gesellius- #Lindgren- #Saarinen. #myhelsinki #visithelsinki #finnisharchitecture #mydesignhelsinki #archilovers #architecturelovers #architectureporn #architecturephotography #archidaily #helsinkilove #helsinkiofficial #igershelsinki #helsinki #finland #jugendhelsinki

Do you know this architectural style? What is your favorite Art Nouveau / Jugend style building?

Tunnetko Jugend -arkkitehtuurisuuntauksen hyvin? Mikä on sinun Jugend -suosikkirakennuksesi?

What's your opinion?

  1. Upeita otoksia – heti tuli hirveä tarve päästä vierailemaan Atelje Finneen! Helsingistä löytää kyllä upeaa arkkitehtuuria (ja joskus vähemmänkin upeaa...).
