6 wintry exhibitions not to miss in Helsinki

Helsinki, 4 degrees

Earth without art is just eh.

Helsinki has one of the highest percentages of museums in the city, and that makes it an excellent art Nordic destination both for locals and visitors! Locals use the Museum Card that recommends 34 museums in the city, whereas the most popular visitor card for museums is the Helsinki Card. Here are my earlier museum hints on the blog! Whatever card you have, or even if you wouldn't have any of Helsinki museum cards, here are nevertheless 6 museums that I recommend you to visit this winter season!

HAM Helsinki: State of Mind / Mieliala

HAM Helsinki Art Museum and Helsinki City Museum have co-produced an exhibition called State of Mind – Helsinki 1939‒1945. Between 1939 and 1945, the appearance and spirit of Helsinki changed drastically. The exhibition, which will be spread over Tennispalatsi, the so-called Tennis Palace, and Villa Hakasalmi, showcases pessimism and optimism as reflected by visual art and photographs, in addition to providing a broader look at the visual world that people had to get used to during wartime.

What I liked: The exhibition architecture and versatile display of museum items. The use of video. The exhibition's color scale is a treat for the eyes, with the large projected images bringing the emotions, facial expressions and gestures of lost Helsinki residents closer to the museum visitor.

The Finnish Museum of Photography / Valokuvataiteen Museo: Lotta Sulin - Lottaland

The Finnish Museum of Photography collection also includes photographs by artists that publish mainly on Instagram! 17-year-old Sulin constructs her photographs entirely herself, from developing the surroundings and designing and sewing the models’ outfits to directing the models. She publishes the photographs on her Instagram account @Lottabylotta. Sulin's photographs have also been published on the Korean Vogue's and Yhteishyvä magazine's website.

Sulinin IG-tili on @LottabylottaValokuvataiteen museon kokoelmissa on yhteensä 39 Lotta Sulinin kuvaa.

I especially liked that Sulin has become famous through Instagram. What stunning photos!

Miten upeita kuvia!

Design Museum: Collectors & Collections / Designmuseo: Keräilijät ja kokoelmat

Opened in October 2019, Collectors and Collections seeks answers to the questions of how and by whom design is collected. How are design collections created and why do some design objects become sought-after collectibles? In addition to museum collections, there are many valuable Finnish collections of design objects that are not accessible to the public. This exhibition displays choice items from valuable private collections both in Finland. Along with rare items, the exhibition also focuses on utility objects. The collecting of everyday items has become a popular pastime because almost anyone in Finland can begin collecting utility glassware of the mid-20th century, Moomin mugs or Arabia tableware. Collectors and Collections also addresses in straightforward terms the downside of the culture of collecting, forgeries of art and design objects.

I especially liked the Moomin items, wall rugs, and chairs! It's fascinating to think about what makes people collect art, and also what important role collectors play in today's art scene.

Pidin erityisesti Muumi -esineistä, ryijyistä ja tuoleista! On kiehtovaa miettiä mikä saa ihmisiä keräämään tavaraa ja myös miten tärkeä rooli keräilyllä on nykypäivän taidemaailmassa.

Ateneum: Helene Schjerfbeck - Through my travels, I found myself / Maailmalta löysin itseni

The exhibition describes how Swedish speaking Finn Helene Schjerfbeck became Helene, and how a talented student grew into one of the most influential artists in Finnish history! The exhibition focuses specifically on Schjerfbeck’s years of travel, during which she stayed in Paris, Pont-Aven in northern France, Fiesole in Italy, and St Ives in England at the end of the 19th century.

Näyttely kertoo, kuinka suomenruotsalaisesta Helene Schjerfbeckistä tuli Helene – kuinka lahjakkaasta oppilaasta kasvoi yksi Suomen historian vaikuttavimmista taiteilijoista! Näyttely keskittyy erityisesti Schjerfbeckin matkavuosiin Pariisissa, Pohjois-Ranskan Pont-Avenissa, Italian Fiesolessa sekä Iso-Britannian St Ivesissa 1800-luvun lopussa.

I especially liked the self-portrait room (she did over 40 self-portraits), her use of fashion and flowers in her art that symbolizes different things and her color use!

Amos Rex: Birger Carlstedt - Le Chat Doré

Amos Rex presents Swedish speaking Finn Birger Carlstedt (1907–1975) in an extensive exhibition that encompasses the artist’s entire career, all the way from his abstract experiments of the 1920s to the Concretist period beginning in the 1950s. The exhibition includes a reconstruction of the legendary café Le Chat Doré, “The Golden Cat”. Birger Carlstedt was a pioneer in abstract art and a multitalented dandy who worked with fields such as interior design, design, and staging, in addition to painting. He followed and participated in the discussion around art during his time, dared to experiment outside the mainstream and familiarised himself with new artistic movements during his many travels.

Amos Rex esittelee Birger Carlstedtin (1907 – 1975) elämäntyötä suuressa näyttelyssä, joka käsittää taiteilijan koko tuotannon 1920-luvun abstrakteista kokeiluista aina 1950-luvulta alkaneeseen konkretistiseen kauteen saakka.

I especially liked the exhibition's plentiful size, it was fascinating to have a look through Carlstedt's complete career! Also, the color scheme of the exhibition was of my liking!

Pidin erityisesti näyttelyn laajuudesta, oli hienoa nähdä Carlstedtin koko ura edessäni! Pidin myös kovasti näyttelyn värimaailmasta!

Finnish Music Hall of Fame / Musiikkimuseo Fame

Newly-opened Music Museum Fame is dedicated to all genres of Finnish music, its creators and performers. The museum is compact but rich in content, as modern technology allows you to experience music in an extraordinary way. The unprejudiced combination of classical and popular music encourages people to discover, encounter and cross borders of genres.

I especially liked that it was difficult to stand still in this museum! The last room in the exhibition will for sure make you dance if you haven't already done so already in an earlier room.

Did you know all of these museums already? Which one would you like to explore?

Tunsitko jo kaikki nämä museot? Minkä niistä haluaisit kokea?

What's your opinion?
