My top 5 districts in Helsinki to spot Art Nouveau / Jugend architecture 2/5 Eira

Architecture should speak of its time and place, but yearn for timelessness.

It's time to continue my blog series about Helsinki's Art Nouveau / Jugend style architecture! Some time ago, I received a request for my blog. One of my followers on Instagram actually asked me to write about Helsinki's Art Nouveau and/or Jugend style architecture. I do get this wish quite a lot, and I was very surprised to notice that I had merely mentioned this incredible architectural style on the blog before - because it is for sure one of the things that I love the most about Helsinki: its high quantity of this castle-like buildings! Second up as an example of Art Nouveau / Jugend districts is Eira!

On aika jatkaa Jugend -blogisarjaani! Jonkun aikaa sitten eräs Instagram -seuraaja toivoi Jugend -aiheista blogisarjaa. Toisena Jugend -kaupunginosana esittelen teille Eiraa!

Eira

Eira is one of the southernmost residential areas in Helsinki. A rugged, rocky shoreline area south of the center. It remained undeveloped up to the beginning of the 20th century (most houses were built between 1911-14) because it was considered far from the city center. As the city grew, the district was reserved for housing. Originally the district was planned as a villa district. In 1905, architects Bertel Jung, Armas Lindgren, and Lars Sonck drew up a housing proposal for the district and it had a significant influence on the final look. The design of the district was influenced by the 19th-century garden city ideology. Austrian town planner Camillo Sitte's book The Art of Building Cities and its free-form structures were a big inspiration. The main plan includes streets that circle the centrally located oval of Engelinaukio Square. The curving, narrow streets between walls, lush parks & gardens make this district simply stunning! The houses with their plastered facades in individual colors that were designed by master builders establish a charming atmosphere!

Eira on yksi Helsingin eteläimmistä asuinalueista. Suunnitelma sai vaikutteita Itävallasta, Camillo Sitten kirja The Art of Building Cities toimi inspiraation lähteenä. Sen aikainen puutarhakaupunki-ideologia toimi esikuvana. Engelinaukio on alueen keskiössä, ja kadut kiertävät kyseistä aukiota. Kiemurtelevat ja lumoavat pikkukadut upeine rakennuksineen tekevät alueesta erikoisen. Myös kaupunginosan vehreys tekee vaikutuksen!

Some of my favorite buildings and areas in this district are among others the Eira hospital, Villa Johanna, Huvilakatu Street, and Eira Park. Eira private hospital gave its name to the entire district! The name comes from mythology: Eir is the Norse goddess of medicine.

Suosikkini alueelta ovat mm. Eiran sairaala, Villa Johanna, Huvilakatu ja Eiranpuisto. Yksityinen Eiran sairaala on antanut nimen koko kaupunginosalle! Nimellä on juurensa mytologiassa: Eir tunnetaan Pohjolan lääketiedejumalattarena.

If you want to see Helsinki's Bridge of Sighs, look for the connecting corridor running over Huvilakuja Alley (see also header photo)!

Helsingin Huokauksien silta löytyy Eiran sairaalan vieressä, Huvilakujalla!

Villa Johanna is a private romantic villa, which is a total work of art: the exterior, interior, and surroundings. The stone mosaic of the pavement in front of the house is spectacular!

Villa Johanna puolestaan on yksityinen romanttinen huvila, joka on kokonaisvaltainen taideteos: julkisivu, sisustus ja ympäristö tekevät tästä ainutlaatuisen kokonaisuuden! Kivimosaiikki talon ulkopuolella on todella kaunis!

Huvilakatu Street is known as Helsinki's most breathtaking and photographed street! It's famous for its row of colorful facades, but I wish more people would tell the story of the district and its architecture, and not merely take photos of the street. The houses have decorative gables, bay windows and are rich in detail. Each house is a true individual!

Huvilakatu tunnetaan Helsingin kuvatuimpana katuna! Se on kuuluisa värikkäistä taloistaan, mutta toivoisin, että useampi kertoisi kaupunginosan tarinaa kun jakaa kuvan kadusta. Jokainen talo tällä kadulla on täynnä upeita yksityiskohtia!

The first city gardener of Helsinki drew up the plans for Eira Park. Its layout is elongated, axial, and symmetrical. The park is also known as the flower park because it has a stunning flower display! The streets running alongside the park have lilacs and lime trees on them. The southern end of the park has a stone terrace, also known as a flower bed!

Eiranpuistikon suunnitelmasta vastasi Helsingin ensimmäinen kaupunginpuutarhuri Svante Olsson. Puistoa voidaan Eiran muiden istutusten ohella pitää edistyksellisenä kaupunkikuvallisena viheralueena. Se oli ja on pieni mannermainen keidas talojen keskellä!
