The incredible thing about technology is that you feel like you're actually present in another place.

I took a little break from blogging as I really felt a lack of inspiration due to the ongoing state of emergency we have in Finland due to the coronavirus. Going into a self-quarantine can have many complex issues and/or complications beyond having enough food and supplies. In terms of entertainment, it also probably means you’re in for a lot of browsing the internet since you might be looking to educate yourself during this time and not merely watch TV. Luckily, there is a way to get a little culture and education while you’re confined to your home. I wanted to write this blog post to show that you can experience the best museums in Helsinki in the comfort of your own home - ideal for social distancing! Now, you get to go to the museum and never have to leave your couch. Here are 12 museums that you can enter from home!

Pidin hieman blogitaukoa koska tämän hetkisen poikkeusolon aikana suoraan sanoen minuun iski inspiraationpuute. Kun olen nyt asiaa saanut hieman miettiä, niin päätin, että halusinkin tuoda toivoa seuraavan blogikirjoituksen myötä. As some background - you might know, Helsinki has ambitious plans on being a pioneer as VR-friendly. The aim is to profile Helsinki as a center of VR/AR expertise, as well as to attract millions of virtual visitors to Helsinki. It already has a platform for experiences, shopping and social encounters in the beautiful capital of Finland. Virtual Helsinki is a digital twin of the Helsinki city center, created in high-quality 3D for VR by Zoan. Virtual Helsinki is currently available for HTC VIVE, VIVE Cosmos, VIVE Pro, Oculus Rift and for mobile as a YouTube 360 video. 

Taustatietona voin kertoa, että Helsingillä on kunniahimoiset tavoitteet VR:n suhteen. Kaupungin tavoitteena on profiloitua VR/AR -osaamisen keskittymänä sekä houkutella VR -Helsinkiin miljoonia kävijöitä. Helsinki on jo luonut ainutlaatuisen virtuaalisen kaupunkikokemuksen yhteistyössä VR-studio Zoanin kanssa. Virtuaalinen Helsinki on 3D -mallintamalla virtuaalitodellisuuteen tuotettu digitaalinen kaksoiskappale (“digital twin”) Helsingistä. 

VR-Helsinki also aims to become a service platform for sustainable tourism, and it showcases that Helsinki's reputation as a city that utilizes the latest digital innovations is true. The unique virtual city experience has been developed by the City of Helsinki together with its partner VR-studio ZOAN. Virtual Helsinki was presented at Slush, the world’s leading startup event, on December 4-5, 2018.

VR-Helsinki tähtää myös kestävän matkailun palvelualustaksi, ja se vahvistaa Helsingin tunnettuutta digitaalisia innovaatioita hyödyntävänä kaupunkina.

Suomenlinna

The 360 map provides information on the different stages of construction of the buildings in Suomenlinna through photographs, text, drawings and an interactive aerial image. Suomenlinna has been under the rule of Sweden (1748-1808), Russia (1808-1918) and Finland (1918-). The map consists history of all these eras. Russian Viapori / Venäläinen Viapori

Originally named Sveaborg, the Suomenlinna fortress surrendered in May 1808 to Russian forces and was transferred, along with its ships and fortifications, to Imperial Russia. The period of Russian control of the fortress lasted until 1918. The photo above is actually from this museum, when I visited it while being pregnant. / Helsingin valitut palat -näyttely tekee sukelluksia Helsingin menneisyyteen ja tuo pintaan yhteisiä muistoja pääkaupungin historiasta. Picture Paths / Kuvapolut

Picture Paths is a new kind of photography exhibition that takes viewers through the evolving streetscapes in Helsinki. In Helsinki, Helsinki City Museum's historical photographs show the city and its residents in the exact location where each photo was originally taken. The photos, attached to ordinary electrical cabinets, form a path through the history of seven different city districts. The photos and their stories can, however, be discovered also online. / Kuvapolut on uudenlainen valokuvanäyttely, joka kuljettaa katsojansa läpi muuttuvan helsinkiläisen katumaiseman. Helsingin kaupunginmuseon historialliset valokuvat kertovat kaupungista ja kaupunkilaisista juuri siellä missä kuvat on alun perin otettu. Arkisiin sähkökaappeihin kiinnitetyt kuvat muodostavat polun seitsemän erilaisen kaupunginosan historiaan. Kuviin ja niiden tarinoihin voi kuitenkin myös tutustua verkossa.

Worker Housing Museum / Työväenasuntomuseo

The Worker Housing Museum provides a glimpse into the history of everyday life in the stove rooms of Helsinki. Stove ovens, wash tables and pull-out beds illustrate the life of working families during different phases of the 1900s. You can now take an online peek into the Worker Housing Museum’s stove rooms. We’ve had the entire museum filmed with a 360° camera, so you can now admire the rooms from the floor to the ceiling. / Työväenasuntomuseon hellahuoneisiin voi nyt kurkata verkon kautta. Museo on kuvauttanut museon kokonaisuudessaan 360°-kameran avulla, joten tiloja voi ihailla lattiasta kattoon asti.

Explore two exhibitions online! Photographer Eino Partanen (1902–1962) recorded the Viipuri theatre scene for a period of ten years 1929–1939. The online exhibition Emotions and Elegance leads the visitor across decades, in the middle of the vibrant theatre scene of the buoyant Viipuri. The other online exhibition explores ancient Greek tragedies performed on stage in Finland. It spans four decades, from the 1980s to 2013. / Suomeksi Teatterimuseolla on peräti kahdeksan verkkonäyttelyä tarjolla! Ensimmäinen niistä kertoo valokuvaaja Eino Partasen (1902–1962) työstä, jolloin hän kuvasi viipurilaista teatteria 10 vuoden ajan vuosina 1929–39. Verkkonäyttely Tunteita ja eleganssia johdattaa vuosikymmenten taakse, keskelle iloisen Viipurin vireää teatterielämää. Toinen esimerkki verkkonäyttelyistä on Tragedia ajassa – ajaton tragedia, joka esittelee Suomessa esitettyjä antiikin kreikkalaisia tragedioita. Näyttelyn sisältö lähtee liikkeelle 1980-luvun esityksistä ja kulkee aina 2013 vuoteen saakka.
