White pumpkins are the new Nordic thing for carving a spooky jack-o'-lantern this Halloween

I'd been thinking about carving my very own Jack-o'-lantern for some years already, but this year the idea came from my preschooler. She thought it would be a fun idea to carve a spooky but fun lantern together. Read my earlier Halloween related blog posts here. As our home follows a Nordic minimalistic color scheme, I knew from the beginning that my family was looking for a white pumpkin. When we found the perfect one at Plantagen, I took it as a sign to actually get it. We followed the instructions of the BBC, and I couldn't be happier with the result! Have a look!

Vuosia olin jo ehtinyt miettimään kurpitsalyhdyn tekoa, mutta leikki-ikäinen tyttäreni oli se, joka keksi ehdottaa, että tehdään sellainen tänä vuonna! Voit lukea aikaisemmat Halloween -teemaiset blogikirjoitukseni täältä. Koska meillä on kotona hyvin maltillisesti värejä käytössä, niin tiesin, että meidän perhe etsisi valkoista kurpitsaa. Kun löysimme täydellisen yksilön Plantagenista, ajattelin sen olevan merkki siitä, että tämä on se vuosi kun tehdään yhdessä ensimmäinen kurpitsalyhty. Seurasimme BBC:n ohjeita, mutta Kodin Kuvalehdellä on ohjeet myös suomeksi. Olen itse todella tyytyväinen lyhtyyn!

First, we chose a large white pumpkin and used a sharp serrated knife to cut off its crown.

Ensin leikkasimme kurpitsasta kannen pois.

Using a large serving spoon, we scooped out the seeds and fibers. Then we removed some of the flesh. With a marker pen, I drew a simple outline of a face on the pumpkin. I used a small serrated knife to cut out the eyes, nose, and mouth.

Kaavi liha ja siemenet talteen lusikalla. Luonnostele tussilla onton kurpitsan pinnalle kasvonpiirteet. Kaiverra naama esiin viivoja pitkin.

And voilà! In the end, I popped some tea lights inside the pumpkin, lighted it and replaced the crown. Now we have been enjoying the lantern already for a couple of weeks, and as I used bleach to kill mold and prevent it from attacking the pumpkin, I think it will be fine for all of October! We have placed the lantern outside on our balcony.

Ja avot! Laitoin koverretun kurpitsan sisään tuikun ja asetin lyhdyn parvekkeelle tunnelmanluojaksi. Kurpitsalyhty säilyy viileässä, meillä se on ollut kaunis jo pari viikkoa. Paransin säilyvyyttä huuhtomalla kurpitsan sisäpintaa valkaisuaineella. Uskon, että kurpitsa säilyy kauniina tämän kuun loppuun.
