When we started planning our wedding anniversary autumn holiday, the choice of destination wasn't that clear and/or easy. I always cheer for Italy, because having lived there for over two years, I genuinely love the country! However, since I highly affected our honeymoon destination choice, see the earlier blog post here, I didn't want to be the one to make the choice this year too, as I didn't think that would be fair. At some point, there were a lot of alternatives for this specific one-week-trip, e.g. Portugal, Spain, Croatia to name some. In the end, it stood between Croatia and Italy as my husband found a family-friendly package trip to both (the main reason for choosing TUI Family Life was the Swedish cartoon character Bamse that our daughter loves). So even though I in this blog post want to tell you why to choose northwest Sardinia, Italy to be your next travel destination, I want to highlight that these reasons come from experience and were not the reasons why we picked the destination in the first place. The main reasons why my husband chose this location were very family-oriented and logical advantages: there was a direct flight connection to the destination that wasn't too long for our daughter, the destination was warm still in September-October and there was a pool for our daughter since she's still a little bit afraid of swimming in the sea with unpredictable waves. Needless to say, the food culture is priceless. This was my second time in Sardinia as I visited it for the first time two weeks back in 2005 (then southern parts like Cagliari, Pula, Chia beach).
Kun aloimme suunnittelemaan hääpäiväsyyslomamatkaamme, niin matkakohteen valinta ei ollut suinkaan helppo. Itse voisin joka vuosi matkustaa Italiaan koska sydämeni sykkii maalle, jossa olen aikoinaan asunut yli kaksi vuotta. Koska koin, että vaikutin niin paljon häämatkakohteemme valintaan, lue aikaisempi blogikirjoitus täältä, niin halusin tällä kertaa, että mieheni valitsisi matkakohteemme. Jossain vaiheessa vaihtoehtoja oli monia, puhuimme mm. Portugalista, Espanjasta ja Kroatiasta. Loppumetreillä oli enää kaksi vaihtoehtoa: Italia tai Kroatia, koska mieheni löysi perheystävällisen pakettimatkan molempiin matkakohteisiin (halusimme kokeilla TUI Family Life -perhematkaa koska tyttäremme rakastaa Bamsea). Joten vaikka tässä blogikirjoituksessa kerron miksi kannattaa valita luoteis-Sardinia seuraavaksi matkakohteeksi, niin haluan tuoda esiin, että vinkit perustuvat kokemukseen. En olisi ennen matkaa osannut kertoa, että juuri näissä pakoissa kannattaa käydä. Mieheni valitsi Sardinian koska sinne oli suora lentoyhteys (helpottaa perheen matkustelua), paikka oli lämmin vielä syys-lokakuussa ja tyttäremme saisi nauttia uima-altaasta (hän nimittäin pelkää vielä aaltoja joten ei mielellään ui/ole meressä. Myös ruokakulttuuri vaikutti. Tämä oli itselleni toinen kerta Sardiniassa. Kävin saarella ensimmäistä kertaa vuonna 2005, jolloin vietin kaksi viikkoa saaren eteläosassa (Cagliari, Pula, Chian ranta).

We stayed at a TUI Family Life hotel called Baia di Conte. The large hotel had a lot of services (restaurants, café, pools, kids clubs, shows, pharmacy, mini market - note not a supermarket, gym, etc.) of its own and one could have stayed inside the hotel premises for the entire time. It would have been fine because the main goal of this trip was to relax and our daughter was sooo happy here. We did, however, want to connect with the locals of this area so we did day trips outside the hotel. I must add that dining out outside of the hotel was challenging because of the hotel's large size and isolated location. It would, of course, have been possible by car, but we didn't feel like renting a car during this trip so therefore we dined at the hotel in its various restaurants. In fact, the only constructive feedback I have about the hotel is that it was so international that it didn't really feel that Italian. During the week, at the hotel, we heard more of the Nordic languages and English than Italian to give you one example. Having said this, it was ideal for our daughter who merely speaks Swedish because she felt that she could be understood as good as everywhere at the hotel. Also, for those who don't speak Italian - in northwest Sardinia, we found that people spoke really well English, the best I've experienced in Italy so far. Here are three places outside the hotel that we saw during our trip that made this destination recommendable as a holiday destination.
Yövyimme TUI Family Life -hotellissa nimeltään Baia di Conte. Hotelli oli suuri ja se tarjosi paljon omia palveluita (ravintoloita, kahvila, uima-altaita, lastenkerhoja, esityksiä, apteekki, matkamuistomyymälä - huom! ei ruokakauppaa, liikuntasalin yms.). Näin ollen koko loman olisi voinut viettää hotellin ympäristössä, ja se olisi ollut tyttäreni mieleen koska uima-altaat olivat todella hyvin hoidettuja. Olihan myös tämän matkan tarkoitus juuri rentoutua. Halusin kuitenkin tutustua paikalliseen kulttuuriin ja ehdotin siksi kolmea päiväretkeä. Söimme kaikki illalliset hotellin eri ravintoloissa, koska hotellialue oli niin suuri ja syrjässä, ettei muita ravintoloita ollut kävelymatkan päässä. Koko hotelli jäikin mieleen kansainvälisenä kokemuksena, ei niinkään italialaisena sellaisena. Kuulimme siellä ollessa enemmän englantia ja muita pohjoismaisia kieliä kuin italiaa. Tyttärelleni tämä oli kuitenkin juuri sopiva ympäristö, kun hän puhuu tällä hetkellä pelkästään ruotsia. Myös niille, jotka eivät puhu italiaa - luoteis-Sardiniassa puhutaan todella hyvin englantia, ehkä kokemukseni mukaan parhaiten koko Italiassa. Tässä kolme paikkaa hotellin ulkopuolella, joiden takia suosittelen luoteis-Sardiniaa lomamatkakohteeksi.

Alghero
Alghero is a city on the northwest coast of Sardinia, Italy, next to the Mediterranean Sea. Encircled by ancient walls, it’s known for its cobblestoned old center and the area (90 km long) around the city has the nickname Riviera del corallo, the Coral Riviera. It has about 44 000 inhabitants and is said to be the 10th most visited city in Italy. Read more about its history here. It has several beaches, bays and natural parks on its shoreline. We took a bus (€6 adults/€2,50 children) from the hotel to reach the city and it only took about 20 minutes. We merely spent half a day in Alghero so we mainly saw its labyrinth of narrow streets also known as its old town (Alghero Vecchia) and marina. I especially liked its beautiful harbor & bastion, delicious gelato shops, innovative wall planters, ceramics, and the birdcage installation with 400 wooden pieces (made by a local art senior high school named Liceo Artistico “Costantino” and flower interior design studio Tonino Serra)!
Algheron kaupunki löytyy aivan Välimeren rannalla (kaupungilla 90km rantaviivaa), ja se tunnetaan vanhasta kaupungistaan sekä korallirivierana. Noin 44 000 asukkaan kaupunki on 10. suosituin vierailukaupunki Italiassa. Voit lukea enemmän kaupungin historiasta täältä. Kaupungilla on useita rantoja, lahtia ja luonnonpuistoja rantaviivan lähellä. Otimme bussin hotellilta kaupunkiin (6€ aikuinen/2,50€ lapsi) ja matka kesti n. 20min. Vietimme noin puolet päivästä Algherossa, joten näimme lähinnä vanhan kaupungin ja sataman. Pidin erityisesti kauniista satamasta ja linnakkeesta, herkullisista jäätelökaupoista, ihanista amppeleista, keramiikasta, ja lintuhäkki-installaatiosta, joka käsitti 400 erilaista puusta tehtyä lintuhäkkiä lintuineen (teos on tehty paikallisen Liceo Artistico “Costantino” -taidelukion ja Tonino Serra -kukkastailististudion yhteistyönä).
Capo Caccia: Neptune's Grotto / Nepturnuksen luola
From Alghero, we took a 3-hour-boat cruise to Capo Caccia to see Neptune's Grotto, which is a stalactite cave near the town of Alghero. It took about one hour to reach the cave from the harbor of Alghero, and we had about one hour to spend at the actual cave before heading back. The boat trip (€15) was one of the highlights of our entire trip, so I can't recommend it enough! The cave (entrance €13) was discovered by local fishermen in the 18th century. The grotto gets its name from the Roman god of the sea, Neptune. I especially liked the boat trip, the views of Capo Caccia and its lighthouse and the cave itself as I had never seen anything like that before!
Algherosta otimme myös kolmituntisen veneretken, joka vei meidät Capo Caccian Nepturnuksen luolalle. Veneretki kesti noin tunnin ja meillä oli n. tunnin verran aikaa myös viettää tippukiviluolassa. Itse veneretki (15€) oli yksi matkamme kohokohdista, joten suosittelen sitä lämpimästi! Tarinan mukaan kalastajat löysivät luolan 1700-luvulla. Pidin erityisesti venematkasta, Capo Caccian majakasta ja itse luolasta! Tämä oli ensimmäinen tippukiviluola, jonka elämässäni näin.
Stintino: La Pelosa
Another day trip that we made was to the area's most famous beach (maybe even one of the most famous beaches in Europe?) called La Pelosa. It lies in the Gulf of Asinara, in the extreme northwestern part of Sardinia. It's a tropical beach with fine sand and very shallow waters! We took a bus tour (€28 adults, €14 children) through TUI to get it. It took about one hour to reach the beach from our hotel so we were at the beach between 10 in the morning and 15.30 in the afternoon. We rented two beach beds for the day (we paid €10/beach bed). I especially liked the shallow waters, the clear water, and the beach!
Toinen päiväretki vei meidät alueen tunnetuimmalle rannalle (kyse on ehkä jopa yhdestä Euroopan tunnetuimmista rannoista) nimeltään La Pelosa. Tämä trooppinen ranta valkoisine hiekkoineen ja mataline vesineen ei jättänyt meitä kylmäksi! Ostimme bussimatkan suoraan TUI:lta (28€/aikuinen, 14€/lapsi), ja kesti n. tunnin verran päästä rannalle hotellilta. Vietimme kokonaisen päivän rannalla, n. klo 10-15.30. Vuokrasimme kaksi rantapetiä (10€/kpl) päiväksi. Pidin erityisesti matalasta vedestä, kirkkaasta vedestä ja itse rannasta!
