5 practical things to expect from a Finnish family center 3-year toddler check

Helsinki, 13 degrees

Having a 2-year-old is like having a blender that you don't have the top for.

As my toddler girl is approaching her third birthday, we had her family center 3-year check recently. I thought that I would share some of the points and tests (besides the obvious weight, height, and head circumference) that we went through at the check, as it might serve as a good checklist for somebody heading for the same check. I would, however, say that there is no need to prepare oneself or your child for the check, especially if the child is in Finnish kindergarten, as my daughter has learned most of the things that were checked, in fact, at the kindergarten. Read my earlier blog post about why Finland is considered a top country to be a mother here.

Koska taaperoni täyttää vajaan kuukauden kuluttua kolme vuotta, niin kävimme hiljattain 3v. neuvolassa. Ajattelin kirjoittaa blogikirjoituksen, jossa jaan kokemuksia neuvolakäynnistä.

Rough motor skills test / Karkean motoriikan testi

In Finland, toddlers are studied based on the so-called Lene principles. Lene is short for toddler neurological development. The principles are given by the National Institute for Health and Welfare, which is a part of the Administrative sector of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. According to the principles, my daughter was tested for walking on toes, jumping with both feet, standing on one foot and throwing a ball with both hands.

In the mid part of the check, we talked about colors and identified them from pictures. My daughter also showed that she knew the difference between the biggest and smallest item in a picture. Animals were also discussed. All of the discussion was a way for her to show that she understands questions. She was also asked to draw different forms (circle, horizontal and vertical lines) and play (build a tower, listen to & follow instructions like taking item x to place y or bring item c to mommy etc.). She also made a knob puzzle.

Neuvolakäynnin keskivaiheessa käytiin läpi värien luokittelua, kuvasta kertomista (isoin/pienin/värit/eläimet), kysymysten ymmärtämistä, mallikuvioita / kuvioiden piirtämistä (ympyrä, vaakaviiva ja pystyviiva), ja leikkiä ja omatoimisuutta (tornin rakentamista, ohjeiden kuuntelua, pyyntöjen toteuttamista - esim. vie tämä esine tiettyyn paikkaan / vie X päydälle ja tuo Y pöydän alta äidille ja ota pöydältä C ja vie hoitopöydälle yms. ja nuppipalapelin tekoa).

Eyesight exam / Näkötesti

At the end of the check, an eye exam was made. My daughter looked at a board and told what forms (heart, triangle, circle etc.) she saw on the board. Both long and short distance eyesight exams were made.

Neuvolakäynnin loppupuolella tarkistettiin lähi- ja kaukonäöntarkkuutta. Tyttärni piti taulusta katsoa rivistä kuvia ja näyttää kädessä olevasta monisteessa mitä kuvaa täti näytti taulussa. Hän tunnisti myös muotoja (sydän, kolmio, ympyrä).

Potty training & pacifier discussion / Kuivaharjoittelu- ja tuttikeskustelu

We also discussed how far we had gone in my daughter's potty training, and if she still uses diapers daytime/nighttime. We agreed that it was good that she doesn't use the pacifier anymore, as it's considered good to stop having one before the age of three.

Käyntiin myös päiväkuiva/yökuiva asiat läpi, ja juteltiin tyttäreni vaippakäytöstä. Todettiin, että on hyvä ettei tyttärni enää käytä tuttia.

Food & sleep / Uni & ruoka

Finally, we discussed my daughter's eating habits (it's normal that at this age, she's very picky with what she eats). Her sleeping routines were also discussed. If you're looking for an English baby & toddler group in Helsinki, you can find one here.

Viimeisenä mutta ei vähäisimpänä, niin käytiin läpi syömiset (todettiin, että on normaalia ettei kaikki ruoka enää taaperolle maistu) sekä sitä miten meillä nukutaan. Lue terveen kolmevuotiaan lapsen koko kehitysvaihe täältä.

Have you been to a 3-year check with your child? Was it similar or different, in what way?

Oletko käynyt 3v. neuvolassa lapsesi kanssa? Oliko kokemus samanlainen vaiko erilainen, millä tavalla?

  1. How interesting. I had no idea children were tested for any of this stuff! Definitely a great topic to write about. I'm sure this will really help a lot of other parents!

    1. I'm happy to hear that the post was informative! :) I didn't know exactly what they would test before the actual test either...
