Top 5 art exhibitions to visit in Helsinki in 2019, 1/2

Helsinki, 1 degree

Your attitude is like a box of crayons that color your world. Constantly color your picture gray, and your picture will always be bleak. Try adding some bright colors to the picture by including humor, and your picture begins to lighten up.

As the amount of daylight increases in the Nordic capital, so does the amount of color! This spring is no exception - have a look at the wonderfully colorful art exhibitions that Helsinki is offering this season!

Lisääntyvän auringonvalon myötä Helsingistä tulee värikkäämpi! Tänä keväänä pääkaupungissa on upea kattaus väririkkaita taidenäyttelyitä - tässä joitakin esimerkkejä!

Ateneum - František Kupka

The Czech artist František Kupka (1871–1957) is known as a pioneer of abstract art, and at the moment you'll find his art in Helsinki! This retrospective of the painter, who enjoyed a long career in Paris, enables viewers to explore the history of Western art: the stage-wise transition from traditional portraiture towards abstract expression. Kupka’s art has been described as “modern poetry of color”. This major international exhibition covers the artist’s entire career, from the 1890s to the 1950s.

Tsekkiläinen František Kupka (1871–1957) tunnetaan abstraktin taiteen pioneerina. Pitkän uran Pariisissa tehneen taidemaalarin retrospektiivin kautta voi tutustua länsimaisen taiteen historiaan: monivaiheisiin muutoksiin perinteisistä muotokuvista kohti abstraktia ilmaisua. Kaikki tämä Helsingissä! Kupkan taidetta on kuvailtu ”moderniksi värien runoudeksi”. Kansainvälinen suurnäyttely kattaa taiteilijan koko uran 1890-luvulta 1950-luvulle.

What I love the most about the art: in his powerful and almost psychedelic works, Kupka applied Newton’s theory of color as well as music theory: you can sense rhythm and movement in the paintings!

Pidin eniten hänen taiteessaan siitä, miten hän sovelsi voimakkaissa ja lähes psykedeelisissä teoksissaan Newtonin värioppia ja musiikin teoriaa: maalauksissa voi aistia rytmin ja liikkeen!

From the photo installations to the background colors, from the music to the lighting - this has to be one of Ateneum's best exhibitions ever! High recommendation, you do not want to miss this! The exhibition runs 'til May 19. Read my earlier blog posts about Ateneum here.

Kiasma - Shoplifter: Nervescape VIII

If you ask me where to boost your energy level this spring, my answer is the modern art museum Kiasma! It has kick-offed its year with a show by the internationally renowned New York-based Icelandic artist Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir, aka Shoplifter, who creates installations from synthetic hair. The subtly humorous installations are massive, allowing viewers to enter them and to stroke the hair! I loved it!

Teosta saa koskea! Pidin siitä kovasti!

Mounted in the fifth-floor galleries, this interactive exhibition called Nervescape VIII (you can pet the hair) will also include musical performances, discussions and other events and programs. Shoplifter has been appointed to represent Iceland in the 2019 Venice Biennale. You do not want to miss this cotton candy color delight! The exhibition runs 'til September 15.

Kiasman viidennessä kerroksessa katsojan ylle vyöryy värikäs ja pörröinen installaatio, jonka lomaan taiteilija kutsuu kävijöitä rentoutumaan. Kirkasvärisessä näyttelytilassa voit hetkeksi unohtaa ympäröivän maailman. Et halua missata tätä pörröistä teosta! Näyttely jatkuu syyskuun 15. päivään asti.

Kunsthalle Helsinki / Taidehalli - Paul Osipow

Looking for some color? Another art suggestion for this spring is Kunsthalle Helsinki's Paul Osipow exhibition! It's a comprehensive retrospective that provides an enlightening overview of the many stages of the Finnish artist's creative evolution.

Etsitkö värejä? Siinä tapauksessa suosittelen myös käymään Taidehallissa tänä keväänä. Siellä kotimaisen kuvataiteen kärkinimiin lukeutuvan Paul Osipowin laaja retrospektiivinen näyttely esittelee taiteilijan tuotantoa valaisten vuosikymmenten aikana tapahtuneita muutoksia.

In a career now spanning 60 years, Osipow (b. 1939) has systematically pushed the limits of creative expression by exploring varied avenues of painting: geometrical and free-form abstract paintings alongside figurative works such as his Classical ruins and still life compositions with food, as well as previously unseen abstract paintings, from the 1960s to the present day. Loved the color use, and Italian Moka pot! I love this art space as it always delivers in giving enough room for the artworks to breath. It's definitely one of my favorite art venues in town! The exhibition runs 'til March 24. Read my earlier blog posts about Kunsthalle Helsinki here.

Paul Osipow (s. 1939) on 60 -vuotisella taiteilijanurallaan tarkastellut järjestelmällisesti ilmaisutapansa mahdollisuuksia maalauksen keinoin. Suomen Taideyhdistyksen tuottamassa retrospektiivisessä näyttelyssä nähdään Osipowin geometrisiä ja vapaamuotoisia abstraktioita, figuratiivisia klassisia aiheita, kuten ruoka-asetelmia ja raunioita sekä ennennäkemättömiä ei-esittäviä maalauksia, 1960-luvulta tähän päivään. Pidin hänen värien käytöstä, ja italialaisesta mutteripannusta! Pidän kovasti Taidehallista, koska täällä annetaan aina taideteoksille tarpeeksi tilaa hengittää. Paikka on ehdottomasti yksi taidesuosikeistani Helsingissä! Näyttely jatkuu maaliskuun 24. päivään asti. Lue aikaisemmat blogikirjoitukseni Taidehallista täältä.
