Top 5 Nordic family games for a toddler

Helsinki, 3 degrees

Life is more fun if you play games.

During the holiday season, many have asked me about what games we have introduced to our toddler girl. She likes to play with a variety of toys, but I thought that I would dedicate this blog post to showcasing the games that she loves to play. As with all of her toys, we prefer Nordic wooden and/or card board toys & games over plastic ones.

Joulupyhien aikaan moni on minulta kysynyt mitä pelejä taaperomme tykkää pelata.

Memory - andBros: Creatures from Finland

Concentration, also known as Match Match, Match Up, Memory, Pelmanism, Shinkei-suijaku, Pexeso or simply Pairs, is a card game in which all of the cards are laid face down on a surface and two cards are flipped face up over each turn. The object of the game is to turn over pairs of matching cards. Concentration can be played with any number of players. It is a particularly good game for young children, though adults may find it challenging and stimulating as well.

Memory -muistipeli on useamman pelaajan peli, jossa on tarkoitus löytää korttiparit nurin päin käännetyistä korteista mahdollisimman pienellä määrällä yrityksiä.

Creatures from Finland memory card game features 15 different animals and a card with all the animals in Finnish and English. The Finnish images are so lovely!

Creatures from Finland -muistipeli sisältää 15 erilaista eläintä ja kortin, josta löytyy kaikkien eläinten suomen- ja englanninkieliset nimet. Mielestäni pelin kuvitus on todella ihana!

Memory - Hanna Konola for Lokal

The playful and modern graphic designs on the wooden memory cards come in a beautiful wooden box for easy storage. The paint used for the illustrations are child friendly. Beautiful design!

Toinen muistipeli, josta tyttäreni tykkää, on tämä graafinen peli, jossa on puiset palikat. Todella kaunis toteutus!

Moomin fishing game: Mumintrollets fisketur - Fiska med Mumintrollet (in Swedish) - Muumipeikon kalaretki

A Moomin lover's must-have! This game is in Swedish & Finnish, but once one knows the rules, it's easy to play even if one doesn't speak neither of the languages because it's based on images. This game was voted in Finland the best game for children in 2016! It's a fishing game, where all the cards are put with their image downwards on the table or floor. Each player tries to pick a fish by moving the Moomin figure that has a magnet underneath. Once you hit a card with a fish, the Moomin figure will automatically raise the card! The youngest player starts, and if one doesn't get a fish, then the turn switches to the next/other player. If you get a Snufkin card, then you get to fish again - twice in a row. However, if you get a Stinky card, the other player needs to return one of his/ her fishes to "the pond" on the table/floor. Super easy & fun!

Kaikkien muumifanien pakko-saada peli! Vuoden Lastenpeli 2016! Lähde kalaan Muumipeikon kanssa! Laita kaikki kiekot kuvapuoli alaspäin pöydälle. Kukin pelaaja yrittää vuorollaan saada kuvallisen kiekon kalastettua magneettisella Muumipeikkofiguurilla.

Puzzle - Lotta Kühlhorn: Pussla julen (in Swedish, but the game itself is easy to play without knowing any Swedish as it's a puzzle)

A lovely pair puzzle game for the youngest celebrating the holidays! We actually introduced this game to our daughter already last Christmas when she was 1½ years and she loved it already then. This year, she didn't remember it, but loves it twice as much! The Nordic images are so beautiful!

Ihana paripalapeli pienimmille jouluintoilijoille! Mielestäni itse palapeli on todella kauniisti kuvitettu!

Dominoes - The Snowman and the Snowdog

From the much loved The Snowman and The Snowdog these beautiful wooden dominoes feature illustrations from the film, take turns to match the colours and pictures together, the first player to place down all of their dominoes is the winner! The Snowman and Snowdog dominoes encourage thinking and problem solving skills as well as imagination and creative developement.

It's been a tradition in my family for as long as I can remember to watch the Snowman on Christmas Eve from TV. This year, my daughter watched it for the first time with me, and she loved it! Of course the sad ending was sad for her, and we discussed it for a while before she understood what happened to the snowman in the end. However, we have been able to relive the short movie by playing this lovely dominoes game! This might not be a Nordic game, but since the movie is so cherished by us, and the box & dominoes are wooden, I think it suits our home perfectly.
