Floral art is the new black: Flora of Finland

Helsinki, 30 degrees

Floral art is the new black.

Commercial collaboration: Flora of Finland / Kaupallinen yhteistyö: Flora of Finland

As someone who's always loved flowers, from a very young age thanks to my beloved passed mother, I've found it interesting to notice how flowers have during recent years become more common and even mainstream. When I was younger, I remember that somebody had to be in gardens or such to buy flowers other than for celebrations. I think the situation was like that before in Finland because of the price of fresh flowers. I noticed the price difference in Italy when I lived there, and therefore I felt it was natural that flowers were more common there in everyday life. Now, however, even here up North, floral crowns for festivals and parties, floral gateways for events and cut flowers & infinity flowers at home are very popular here. Since not only natural flowers are trendy, but also infinity and artificial flowers, not to even mention floral clothing and accessories, I don't see this trend fading, quite the opposite actually. I think in the near future, flowers will take over our lives much widely.

As I mentioned in my earlier blog post, as a 30+ girl, lately I've been fascinated by art. That is why I think that floral art might just be the next big thing! Sure botanical art illustrations / botany / herbaria / flower photography have been around already, but when I came across an art & design company that photographs Finnish natural flowers and plants, named Flora of Finland, well, let's just say that I was over the moon! It's like someone looked inside my head, and realized a wish without me even having to ask for it!

I was thrilled when I heard that the company wanted to collaborate with me on the blog and send me one of its beautiful floral posters. I chose the tufted vetch, photographed in Helsinki's Kannelmäki district, mostly thanks to its vivid color. It now decorates our living room, and brings ultraviolet color (read about the color of the year in this earlier blog post) to it, together with two Finnish interior pieces that I've picked up from the current summer sales: Iittala's Kastehelmi candle holder and Pentik's Maisema pillowcase.

Itse valitsin kyseisen julisteen koska kasvin voimakkaat värit puhuttelivat minua. Nyt juliste koristaa meidän olohuoneen tauluseinää, ja tuo violettia / liilaa väriä huoneeseen (lue aikaisempi blogikirjoitukseni vuoden väristä), yhdessä kahden muun kotimaisen sisustustuotteen kanssa. Muut tuotteet löysin kesäaleesta: Iittalan Kastehelmi -tuikkukuppi ja Pentikin Maisema -tyynynpäällinen.

Anna-Mari Lämsä from FoF (short for Flora of Finland) told me about the start of the company: "Around February 2016, my previous colleague and I had this idea of creating a herbarium (a collection of preserved plant specimens – ed). We have a long tradition of herbaria here in Finland, generally done in books. But we were thinking: Nature plays such a big role in the Finnish character; wouldn’t it be cool and interesting to do a herbarium of Finnish nature with photographs, and put it up on Instagram? A traditional book would be sitting in a bookshelf waiting to be picked up by just one person, while an online herbarium could be seen and enjoyed by everybody in the world!”

FoF:in (Flora of Finlandin) Anna-Mari Lämsä kertoi minulle yrityksen synnystä näin: "Kiteytettynä Flora of Finland on syntynyt noin pari vuotta sitten kaverusten ideasta tehdä perinteikäs kasvio valokuvaten suoraan luonnossa mukana kulkevassa studiossa. Jokainen kasvi on valokuvattu vain minuutteja poimimisesta ja kuvattavat kasvit valikoituvat hyvin intuitiivisella menetelmällä. Kasviokuviamme on ottamassa aina 2-3 henkilöä.

The plants are photographed only minutes after they have been picked as the FoF team carries a portable studio with it. The plants / specimens are chosen with intuition, but the company also listens to the wishes of Instagram followers and customers. You can read more about the photo shooting process in this story. The company values locality, equality, innovation, Finland's country brand and people's relationship to nature.

Ehdotuksia kuvattaviksi kasveiksi tulee paljon sosiaalisen median kautta, joten Instagram- ja Facebook -kanavat ovat hyviä väyliä toivomiseen. Tulevaisuuden unelmana on luoda Flora of Finlandista kansainvälinen brändi. Tärkeitä asioita yritykselle ovat mm. kotimaisuus, luonnon suojelu, tasa-arvo, innovatiivisuus, Suomi-brändin kohottaminen ja ihmisten luontosuhteen vahvistuminen taiteen kautta. Voit lukea mielenkiintoisen englanninkielisen jutun yrityksestä täältä

I love how Lämsä explains her storytelling approach to the specimens: "I want to bring the best out of them, but I also want to show something… human. Like: in this position it seems to be dancing now… And these two are embracing each other, like they are in love…I want to display…emotion." When science meets art, that is when you have a winner if you ask me!

I also like how se looks forward to the company's future: "Perhaps there will be books at some point, not yet. After the brand is bigger, maybe in five years or so. We have hundreds of images. But for plans, I want FoF to be the biggest design brand in Finland at some point, bigger that Marimekko. But no hurry!" I wish there would be prints with a white background, as I find it to be more hopeful than the black one that the prints now have. I also would love to see flowers & plants as a part of Finland's country brand (like for example Holland has done) & city marketing like Helsinki's brand. I believe that people see themselves in flowers, so there is huge potential in floral product development: wall stickers, personal items like clutches and toilet bags, key rings, textiles, wooden floral souvenirs, clip art, tattoo art, floral emoticons, glass items - the list of ideas is endless!

Pidän myös FoF:in tulevaisuuden näkymistä.
