2 + 1 x must-visit museums this winter in Helsinki

Helsinki, 2 degrees

Earth without art is just eh.

Helsinki just enjoyed two weeks of winter wonderland as the city was covered in snow. Unfortunately, plus degrees returned to the Finnish capital in the end of this week. Now all the locals are hoping for the return of snow - which for us means so much more than a pretty landscape. Snow is what makes winter winter, you might say. Despite the fact that we're heading towards lighter days, we need snow, as it makes the city even lighter as it reflects light. So keep your fingers crossed that snow will return to us soon.

Ja niin siinä sitten kävi. Saimme nauttia lumisesta Helsingistä noin kaksi viikkoa.

It feels silly to write this blog post only now, as I talk about these art exhibitions every week to the international guests that we have at work, at My Helsinki Residence. Therefore they feel very close to me, and I had to double-check that I hadn't written about all of them before. Incredible, how art exhibitions can feel so at hand. Here follows my personal suggestions on what museums to not miss this winter season in Helsinki.

(HAM) Helsinki Art Museum: Pekka Kauhanen & Ola Kolehmainen 'til March 4 / 4.3. asti

There is always a reason to visit HAM - Helsinki Art Museum when in Helsinki as it hosts the only permanent Tove Jansson exhibition in the world. However, besides that, currently there are at least two more reasons to visit the functionalist building, which back in the days hosted four tennis courts and nowadays is a cultural and recreational center in Helsinki's commercial heart, the Kamppi district: the exhibitions of Finnish Pekka Kauhanen & Ola Kolehmainen. If you ask me, there is no better way to be inspired and get your mind working than to surround yourself with both sculptures & photography. And that is exactly the kind of combination you now find at HAM.

The 26 amazingly detailed sculptures were fascinating for me, and inspired me to also visit one of Helsinki's newest public artworks - Pekka Kauhanen's (b. 1954) National Memorial to the Winter War. There is a miniature and plaster model of the sculpture at HAM's exhibition.

Kauhasen (s. 1954) 26 yksityiskohtaiset veistokset olivat äärimmäisen kiehtovia, ja niiden inspiroimana kävin myös katsomassa Kauhasen Talvisodan kansallisen muistomerkin, joka on yksi Helsingin uusimmista julkisista veistoksista. Sen pienois- ja kipsimalli löytyy HAMin näyttelystä.

Ola Kolehmainen's (b. 1964) Sacred Spaces photo exhibition on the other hand made me think about the similarities and differences between holy places in the world. The 28 photos showcase the interwoven history we have in Europe. Naturally, I was most touched & impressed by the photos that showed churches that I have personally been to - the Italian Pantheon & St. Peter's Basilica. The way Kolehmainen has captured light in these buildings - it's just stunning!

Ola Kolehmaisen (s. 1964) Pyhiä tiloja -näyttely sai minut sen sijaan ajattelemaan mitä yhteistä ja erilaista eri pyhissä paikoissa on. Näyttelyn 28 valokuvaa muistuttavat edustamiensa uskontojen risteävästä historiasta Euroopassa. Luonnollisesti, minua koskettivat eniten valokuvat kirkoista, joissa olen itse käynyt Italiassa. Kolehmaisen taianomainen tapa vangita valo kuviin teki minuun suuren vaikutuksen.

Kunsthalle Helsinki / Taidehalli: EGS: Writing my diary 'til February 25 / 25.2. asti

As you know (as I've mentioned it before on the blog), I'm a great fan of street art. I guess that is therefore no wonder that this exhibition was of my liking. However, before going, I had no idea that I would see so many interesting maps as I did. So if there are other map lovers out there, this is for you! EGS (b. 1974) is one of the best-known Finnish graffiti artists worldwide. His work can be seen across cityscapes in dozens of different countries (five continents and more than 50 countries over 30 years). In recent years he has widened his artistic scope to embrace more traditional art forms.

EGS (s. 1974) on Suomen kansainvälisesti (30 vuoden aikana EGS on tehnyt taidetta viidellä mantereella, yli 50 maahan) tunnetuimpia graffititaiteilijoita. Viime vuosina EGS on laajentanut taiteilijuuttaan kohti perinteisempiä taidemuotoja, ja näyttelyssä nähdäänkin mm. maalauksia, veistoksia ja installaatioita.

Finnish National Art Gallery Ateneum: the Von Wright Brothers & National Gallery of Duckberg 'til February 25 / Kansallisgalleria Ateneum: Veljekset Von Wright & Ankallisgalleria 25.2. asti

These two exhibitions I've mentioned before on the blog, here and here, but I thought I would remind you of them as you still have time to explore them and they are definitely worth a visit! I don't know pf a better example of combining classic art with pop art!

What kind of art inspires you? Do you long for art exhibitions from time to time?

Minkälaisesta taiteesta sinä pidät - mikä inspiroi? Kaipaatko taidenäyttelyitä aika ajoin?
