Finnish food trends

Helsinki, 3 degrees

There is no sincerer love than the love for food.

In September this year, the Finnish Broadcasting Company (in short Yle) told that Finns eat nowadays much healthier than before. This news was based on five years of customer shopping insight information from the two leading grocery store chains in Finland: Kesko & S Group. Inspired by this piece of news, I thought that it would be interesting to share the current Finnish food trends on the blog.

The strongest trend is that we are eating more according to the Finnish national nutrition recommendations: less red meat (more white meat like chicken), more legumes, nuts, vegetables and fruits.

– "Mennään ainakin osittain siihen suuntaan, mitä ravintosuosituksissa ajetaan. Vähennetään punaisen lihan kulutusta, syödään entistä enemmän palkokasveja, pähkinöitä, kasviksia ja hedelmiä", arvioi ruokakulttuurin tutkija Mari Niva Helsingin yliopistosta Ylen jutussa.

Finns are, at the moment, above all in love with two products: avocado & quark. Avocados are now sold more than four times more than five years ago. The quark craze has taken over two other products: yoghurt & sour milk. Also, new alternatives to meat are popular. However, also sausages with a high amount of meat are popular. It seems to be either a lot of meat or no meat at all. Infused waters, oat bread and nuts are also on the rise.

Instead of regular milk, Finns are now drinking specialty milks or plant-based drinks like oat or soy milk. Gluten-free products are widely popular. The current Finnish food mega trends are in fact wellness, green values, taste and easiness.

According to Yle, the biggest Finnish future trend in food is fish: people will return to eat more traditional fish like Baltic herring, vendace and roach.

Any surprises among the Finnish food trends? Do you agree with them?

Onko ruokatrendeissä jotain yllättävää? Vastaavatko ne sinun ruokavaliotasi?

What's your opinion?

  1. I would like to switch to almond milk but a quart of it costs more than a gallon of regular milk here

    1. Yes, that is true. Cost is a factor that affects purchase. Hopefully one day we'll have free choice and won't be guided by price.

  4. I am really glad that Finnish people are eating more healthily now, it's good to know that around the world people are paying attention to that, since food is a source of "cure" for many things! I loved the photo of avocado, my favorite food! Hope you have a lovely weekend!
