2 reasons to visit the Finnish National Gallery Ateneum this fall 1/2

Helsinki, 8 degrees

A bird sitting on a tree is never afraid of the branch breaking, because her trust is not on the branch but on her own wings.

As you might remember from my earlier blog post, the Finnish National Gallery Ateneum hosts my favorite exhibition in town called Stories of Finnish Art that is on until year 2020. This fall, however, that exhibition has a new twist that is worth visiting before February 25, 2018! There is also another completely new exhibition at Ateneum, running at the same time, so there are two times more reason to visit this remarkably beautiful building & home of art in Helsinki!

In this first blog post out of two, I'll focus on the new exhibition at Ateneum. Last year I revealed in my earlier blog post that my beloved passed mother used to love the art of the Swedish-speaking Finnish brothers Von Wright (Magnus 1805-1868, Wilhelm 1810-1887 and Ferdinand 1822-1906). As long as I can remember, she had their nature-themed art in my childhood home. Needless to say, I felt I had to honor her by visiting the new The Von Wright Brothers exhibition at Ateneum. I know that if she still would be here, we would for sure have seen the exhibition together. In a way, I like to think, that we did, even though she wasn't physically present.

Besides nature-themed art, the brothers made avian-themed, scientific, botanical and landscape works. For me, it was especially important to find the originals of the exact same themes that I had seen in my childhood home. However, my other favorites at the exhibition included Helsinki paintings & drawings, sea views and winter landscapes. High recommendation! If you would ask me to name only one painting that you should recognize as Finnish, it's the so called Finnish Mona Lisa, Ferdinand Von Wright's The Fighting Capercaillies. It's impressive to see with your own two eyes!

Luontoaiheisten teosten lisäksi, veljekset tunnetaan monipuolisina muotokuvien, maisemien, lintumaalausten sekä tieteellisten eläin- ja kasvikuvitusten tekijöinä. Minulle oli ehdottoman tärkeätä löytää näyttelystä kaikki äitini seinälautasten orginaaliteokset. Niiden lisäksi, näyttelysuosikkini olivat Helsinki-aiheiset, merelliset ja talvi-teemaiset teokset. Iso suositus! Olen kuullut, että Ferdinand Von Wrightin Taistelevat metsot on Suomen tunnetuin taulu, joten oli hienoa nähdä upea teos omin silmin!

How well do you know Finnish art or its history? Do you have a favorite artist or piece of art?

Miten hyvin tunnet kotimaista taidetta tai taidehistoriaa? Onko sinulla suosikkitaiteilijaa tai taideteosta?

What's your opinion?

  1. I don't know most art well enough to know its country of origin without looking it up
