Letter to my mother

Helsinki, 4 degrees

Heaven knows we need never be ashamed of our tears, for they are rain upon the blinding dust of earth, overlying our hard hearts. I was better after I had cried, than before--more sorry, more aware of my own ingratitude, more gentle.

I still enjoy autumn. Chillier days, the sweater season, when nature dresses up in bright colors, as it would be celebrating before the true end of summer arrives. Before nature goes to sleep for a while. It's just that I've started to fear the end of autumn, because it reminds me of the awful thing that happened last year on the last day of autumn - the day when you passed away. This weekend the first frost arrived to Helsinki. Even though we are daytime still enjoying autumn temperatures, the mornings are already showing signs of approaching winter. And therefore sadness has hit me. I have been dreading this time of the year for a long time, and even so, it has hit me harder than I expected.

This weekend, when I walked through beautiful autumn landscapes, I could only think of you. This morning I woke up crying, and it continued like that for the most parts of this day. It's still about one and a half week to that day - when it's been one year since I last held your hand - but I can already feel the sorrow taking a hold of me. It has been my loyal companion for years already, since it's already almost five years since dad passed away, but still it gets so overwhelming sometimes. Even though I know you two are together right now, probably on one of your many exciting adventures. It's strange, grief does change forms - at least for me. By now, I'm not expecting you to turn up anymore. I guess that is a sign of some kind of acceptance of the situation. However, I thought I would have realized by now that you're not among us anymore. But I still don't. I know it's so, but another part of me still likes to think that it's not true. I just miss you so uncredibly much.

Sekin on kai merkki tilanteen hyväksynnästä.

This weekend I saw a natural gateway in a local park, and I thought about if you're just on the other side of it. Sometimes it feels like you're so close to me that I can almost touch you. Other times it feels like you're always with me, within me.

By now, your granddaughter is starting to be big enough to react to my tears. I always tell her that I'm crying because I miss grandmother so much. I've been filling in a book about you that I will share with her when she gets older. I can't wait to share more of you with her, as I know how much you loved her even though she was merely four months old when you passed away. I know you're proud of us, also of my sister & her lovely daughter. I can only imagine the joy on your face if you could be present in our company.

I know that nobody can give me any answers to why you had to be taken from us when you did, but I know I shouldn't focus on that. I should focus on being even half as positive as you were. Half as energetic, and optimistic. And grateful. In the end, it's your wonderful qualities that will help me through this period. Once winter is here, I hope I will become stronger again. I will strive to find strength in this time of transition. As nature has its unpredictable ways, it's only for us to accept it. In my heart, I know you're at peace, just like the sun and falling leaves outside my window. Come what may, I will love you to the end of my days.

What's your opinion?

  1. I confess I could not read all, tears all over, Elisabeth... this last week I cried very much missing my mother, even today... so I understand that such a letter is amazing, but I am too emotional now... :( Hope you have a beautiful day!
