Koti Sleepover

Helsinki, 16 degrees

Home is not a place, it's a feeling.

Helsinki is interesting year-round, but somehow I especially like the city in fall. There is a kind of excitement in the air, and it's a time for new beginnings, and even planning ahead for the next year. This fall, it's been possible to stumble upon something quite surprising within the stone walls of Helsinki's so called new old town, the Tori Quarters it is. It's an ideal location right next to the sea, between the Market Square and Senate Square. On one of Helsinki's pedestrian streets, a street that dates back to the 17th century, there has been welcoming signs since August 16 for KOTI Sleepover. So what is this all about?

Helsinki on mielenkiintoinen paikka ympäri vuoden, mutta pidän erityisesti kotikaupungistani syksyisin. Silloin ilmassa on innostuneisuutta.

KOTI (home in Finnish) Sleepover is a modern & living art and design installation conceived by Finnish Linda Bergroth for the Finnish Institute in Paris. Originally set as a pop up livable installation inside the Finnish institute in Paris for a 100 days in spring 2017, KOTI is now in Helsinki until September 17. KOTI is an immersive experience into Finnish hospitality and cottage culture, as well as an exhibition showcasing Finnish knowhow in design and architecture. There are six cottages altogether, and they can be booked on Airbnb (€125-280/night).

KOTI Sleepover on Linda Bergrothin luoma moderni & elävä taide- ja designinstallaatio. Suomalainen muotoilija sai tehtäväannon Suomen Ranskan instituutilta.

As the cottages are part of an installation, they are open to public viewing during the day between 1pm-6pm. And yes, despite the fact that the cottages don't include a toilet/sauna, both are available on the premises. Actually, one of the coolest saunas in town with its own private rooftop terrace lies here! It's impossible to capture this place's truly unique character in photos - so I highly recommend that you visit this place if you're in town! The only things I missed from the cottages were the scent of wood, the water element (as a sound effect or even as drinking water) and Finnish flora/fauna posters that can be found in as good as every Finnish cottage.

Ja vaikka mökeissä ei itsessään ole kylpyhuoneita tai saunaa, niin molempia löytyy kyllä mökkejä isännöimmästä rakennuksesta. Oikeastaan yksi Helsingin hienoimmista saunatiloista, jolla on oma kattoterassi, löytyy täältä! KOTI Sleepoverin uniikkia luonnetta on mahdotonta vangita kuviin - joten suosittelen käyntiä paikan päällä jos olet Helsingissä! Itse jäin kaipaamaan mökeistä vain puun tuoksua, vesi-elementtiä (esim. ääniefektina tai ihan juomaveden muodossa) ja vanhanaikaisia flora/fauna -julisteita, joita löytyy melkein jokaisen suomalaisen mökistä.

What is your relation to cottages, or small wooden houses in general? How does your inner cotter feel about these cottages set in a not rural but central location?

Mikä on sinun suhteesi mökkeihin, tai pieniin puutaloihin yleisesti? Mitä mieltä sisäinen mökkeilijäsi on näistä mökeistä, jotka löytyvät pääkaupungin keskustasta?

What's your opinion?

  1. Log cabin homes are popular here. I'd like one but certainly don't want to have the added expenses
