Top 3 + 1 districts in Milan, Italy

Helsinki, 4 degrees

Italy, and the spring and first love all together should suffice to make the gloomiest person happy.

When I recently visited Milan, Italy, with my family, I wanted to show my family members the main sights of the city, but I was also curious to see some of the new sights in town. Despite the fact that Milan was already about three times bigger than Helsinki when I lived there, it has managed to develope some new districts in little over 10 years. My home district in Milan was Moscova, which also has bloomed since I lived there. This time, we actually stayed at a nearby hotel, so I felt very homey throughout our stay. In this blog post I won't talk about the main attractions of the city (because you can find them by simply searching for Milan on the internet), but I want to share some of my favorite districts in Milan.

Brera & Garibaldi

As I mentioned before, when I lived in Milan as an au pair in 2005-2006, my home was in the district of Moscova that lies next to Brera & Garibaldi. The district of Brera was once the bohemian art district of Milan, but it has rapidly developed to become a center for fashion, design and chic venues for Italian aperitivo (a selection of starters - antipasti - with drinks like in the first photo of this blog post) and dinner.

Why visit? I love these districts for their museums, restaurants, cafés, pedestrian streets, roof gardens, verdant courtyards and beautiful gateways.

Miksi käydä? Rakastan kaupunginosien museoita, ravintoloita, kahviloita, kävelykatuja, kattopuutarhoja, vehreitä sisäpihoja ja kauniita porttikongeja.

Isola (Porta Nuova)

This 19th-century working class and sleepy residential neighbourhood, which translates as “island”, is isolated from the rest of the bustling city, cut off by railway tracks. So why did I want to visit it?

Tämä kaupunginosa on kuten Helsingin Kallio: vanha työläisalue. Nimi viittaa saareen, koska alue on ollut eristyksessä muusta kaupungista kiitos junaratojen. Miksi kävin siis täällä?

When I visited Milan back in 2014 for work, I noticed something on Instagram that caught my attention. Bosco Verticale (direct translation: vertical forest), designed by Stefano Boeri. I instantly knew I had to see these green apartment buildings with my own two eyes once I was back in town. In my mind, Milan had a lot to offer when I lived in the city, but no forest. That was why I was highly intrigued to explore this so called urban forest. Bosco Verticale is a complex of two residential buildings, where each apartment has a terrace with either a tree and/or bushes.

Don't miss Piazza Gae Aulenti, the so called steel & glass heart of Milan. The square is dominated by the imposing silhouette of the Unicredit building - the tallest in not only the city, but the whole the country with its spire reaching 231 meters. This building is also quite new, it got its spire in 2011. I think it's fascinating that there is a little statue of the Virgin Mary on the top of the spire, in respect of the Milanese tradition that no building should ever be higher than the Madonnina that is on the top of the most well-known sight in the city - the cathedral named Duomo – as the saying goes, ‘man shall not overtake what God created’. The urban spaces around this skyscraper and the Piazza Gae Aulenti square are considered one of Europe’s most ambitious urban renewal projects.

Rakennus valmistui vuonna 2011.

My good Milan-based friends behind the blog The Crowded Planet have also written a great blog post about the district of Isola. In their post, you'll see why even the underground stop in Isola is worth a visit. I also love how well they've covered the district's street art.

Why visit? Bosco Verticale is definitely one of Milan's must-see if you ask me. The urban art works & street art makes the district interesting as well.

Miksi käydä? Bosco Verticale on mielestäni yksi Milanon päänähtävyyksistä. Kaupunki- ja katutaide tekevät tästä kaupunginosasta mielenkiintoisen.

Navigli & Darsena

A couple of years ago in Helsinki I heard an Italian architect describe the new harbor area in Milan called Darsena, and I knew straight away that I wanted to visit it. The Darsena, which stands for harbor, is at the point where the two canals; Naviglio Pavese & Naviglio Grande, meet. The Naviglio Grande, which is 50km long, takes its water from the river Ticino and reaches Milan at Porta Ticinese at the newly-reopened Darsena. The Navigli district, of course, was familiar to me from before, as it's one of the main sights in the city. It's a hub of music venues, restaurants, pubs, little markets, and antique fairs during weekends.

Pari vuotta sitten sain Helsingissä kuulla italialaisen arkkitehdin kertovan Milanon uudesta satama-alueesta nimeltään Darsena, ja tiesin heti, että halusin sen nähdä. Darsena on se kohta Milanossa, jossa kaupungin kaksi kanavaa (Naviglio Pavese & Naviglio Grande) kohtaavat. Naviglio Grande on 50km pitkä. Navigli -kaupunginosa tunsin toki aikasemminkin koska se kuuluu Milanon päänähtävyyksiin. Alue tunnetaan keikkapaikoistaan, ravintoloistaan, pubeistaan, ja markkinoistaan.

I like this district the most because it adds the water element in Milan - something that I deeply missed as a port-loving girl when I lived there! I've heard that Milan has historically a love-hate relationship with its canal network. Canals used to be the backbone of the city, but at some point the city began to bury them to make room for roads.

Why visit? It's a nice water outdoor venue for a stroll along the pedestrian walkways, and a great meeting point, or place to enjoy a snack with panoramic views.

+ Parco Sempione

This is by far one of the places I've spent the most time in in Milan. As an au pair, this is where I spent hours with the girl I looked after. We visited its aquarium, sports stadium, Napoleonic arch, and even medieval castle. This time, with my family, we simply enjoyed taking walks in the park.

Why visit? It's the perfect place to enjoy a walk or run among flowers and greenery, far from the hustle and bustle of the urban jungle that is Milan.

Miksi käydä? Puisto on täydellinen paikka kävelyille ja lenkeille. Alue on vehreä ja kaunis, ja siellä unohtaa olevansa suurkaupungissa.

Have you been to Milan? Any favorites among its districts? If you haven't been to Milan, what do you in general look for in your favorite city districts?

Oletko käynyt Milanossa? Onko sinulla suosikkikaupunginosaa?

What's your opinion?

  1. I haven't been to Italy and unfortunately they didn't offer trips to Venice from Dubrovnik. it's still too far away! but what really caught my eye from your post is Isola with those absolutely amazing buildings. I have seen trees growing on rooftops and balconies but that amount of them is just amazing! thank you for sharing!
