Man måste älska stormen för att klara tryggheten och man kan bara älska stormen om man vet att man någonstans är trygg.

Last Saturday I was in for a treat: I finally got to see a theater play I had been waiting for for a long time! Svenska Teatern, (the Swedish Theatre) in Finland is this year celebrating its 150th anniversary. The grand production for the anniversary year is Lucas Svensson’s play TOVE directed by Fiikka Forsman. Alma Pöysti and Ylva Ekblad play the artist Tove Jansson at different ages. Viime lauantaina sain vihdoin nähdä odotetun näytelmän! Tänä vuonna 150-vuotisjuhlavuottaan viettävän Svenska Teaternin talven suurproduktio on Lucas Svenssonin kirjoittama TOVE -näytelmä. Suurella näyttämöllä 8.2.2017 ensi-iltansa saadun näytelmän tähdittävät Alma Pöysti ja Ylva Ekblad. Pöysti ja Ekblad esittävät Tove Janssonia kahtena eri ikäkautena Fiikka Forsmanin ohjaamassa produktiossa. Muistat ehkä aikaisemman blogikirjoitukseni Tovesta, jos et, niin löydät sen täältä.

In short, the play tells about two time periods in Tove's life: 1949 when she's juggling between the Finnish cities Kotka and Helsinki, as she's painting a mural in a kindergarten in Kotka while preparing a theater play about the Moomins in Helsinki. The second period in this play is set in 1971 when Tove is already a well-known artist and she's visiting Japan while preparing herself for a world tour. In my opinion, here are the three main themes of the play. I think they are the biggest reason why everyone should go see the play.

Näytelmässä nähdään kaksi aikakautta Toven elämässä: Vuonna 1949 tämä joksenkin väärinymmärretty taitelija matkaa Kotkan ja Helsingin väliä. Kotkassa hän luo seinämaalauksia lastentarhaan ja Helsingissä valmistellaan Muumipeikko ja pyrstötähti -näytelmää Svenska Teaternilla. Vuonna 1971 maailmankuulu taitelija valmistautuu maailmanympärysmatkaan Japani -käynnillään. Mielestäni näytelmässä on kolme isoa teemaa, jotka muodostavat yhdessä suurimman syyn käydä näytelmää katsomassa.

Love - Rakkaus

In this play, we get insight in several of Tove's love stories: her love for both women & men - Atos, Vivica, Tuulikki, but also work, and the Moomins, and finally, the love for her family members.

Tove -näytelmä auttaa ymmärtämään useita Toven rakkaussuhteita: hän rakkautensa niin naisia kuin miehiäkin kohtaan - näytelmässä nähdään Atos, Vivica, ja Tuulikki; mutta myös miten hän rakasti työtään, ja muumeja, ja lopulta, miten paljon hän välitti lapsuusperheestään.

I clearly remember where I was when I heard of Tove's passing, as I already then admired her. I was 15, and on my confirmation camp, set on an island in front of Helsinki. Because of my young age, I didn't have the chance to meet Tove myself, so I've only seen interviews with her, read her books & memoirs, and heard her book readings. Therefore, her voice & look is familiar, but I've never seen her interact with other people. I found it fascinating to be able to see that, even though it was in a play, for the first time.

Muistan itse tarkasti missä olin kun kuulin Toven kuolemasta, ehkä koska ihailin häntä jo silloin. Olin 15-vuotias, ja rippileirillä Helsingin edustalla olevalla saarella. Koska olin teini, en ehtinyt koskaan tavata Tovea. Näin ollen olen vain nähnyt hänet haastatteluissa, lukenut hänen kirjojaan ja elämänkertaa, sekä kuullut hänen kertomia äänikirjoja. Mutta ennen näytelmää, en ollut koskaan nähnyt Tovea vuorovaikutuksessa muihin ihmisiin. Mielestäni tämä puoli hänestä, vaikka olikin näytelmässä, oli kiehtovaa katseltavaa.

Family - Perhe

In the play, the huge impact her family had on her was really evident. I could feel the expectations her parents had of her, and the norms she lived by. Despite the fact that I've always known that her birth family played a big role in her life, the play truly opened my eyes and made me see just how big that role was.

Näytelmä nosti esiin Toven lapsuusperheen syvän vaikutuksen häneen. Näytelmästä kävi ilmi miten suuria odotuksia perheellä oli Tovea kohtaan ja millaisten sääntöjen kanssa hän eli. Vaikka tiesin, että lapsuusperhe oli vaikuttanut suuresti Toveen, niin vasta tämä näytelmä sai minut todellakin ymmärtämään tämän puolen Tovessa.

Naturally, I was touched my the older Tove's mourning over her mother as it reminded me of my current life situation: three months after my own mother's passing.

Luonnollisesti liikutuin vanhemman Toven surusta, koska hän, kuten minäkin tällä hetkellä, suri äidinsä menetystä näytelmässä.

Work - Työ

Throughout the play, Tove's work was always present. Both her writing & painting.

Toven työ oli läsnä läpi näytelmän. Niin hänen kirjoittamisensa kuin maalaamisensa.

At some point, I started to think: does Tove exist without her work - how would she be then? Or how was she before she worked? Maybe because I'm currently on maternity leave, I would like to think that there is more to us than merely a "work personality". If not, who am I right now, as I'm not working?

Jossain kohtaa rupesinkin miettimään: oliko Tove olemassa ilman työtään - millainen hän silloin olisi? Tai millainen hän oli ennen kun rupesi työskentelemään? Ehkä koska löydän itseni parasta aikaa äitiyslomalta, niin haluan uskoa, että meissä on enemmän kuin pelkkä työminä. Jos ei, niin kuka minä olen tällä hetkellä, kun en työskentele?

I think I have many things in common with Tove, and I think many people think so. I remember hearing her niece saying that everyone think they know Tove, that somehow she gets under people's skin. I won't go that far, because I realize that I didn't know her in real-life, but one thing that I think we have in common is that we mark our ideas to memory. I believe words empower us, and I think Tove did so too.

Mielestäni minulla ja Tovella on paljon myös yhteistä, mutta varmasti moni samaistuu Toveen. Muistan kuulleeni kun Toven veljentytär kertoi, että jokainen luulee tuntevansa Toven, että jokaisella on jonkinlainen suhde häneen. En sanoisi niin, koska en tuntenut häntä oikeassa elämässä. Yksi asia, mitä meillä kahdella kuitenkin on yhteistä, on se, että kirjoitamme ajatuksiamme muistiin. Uskon, että sanat antavat meille voimaa, ja uskon, että niin uskoi Tovekin.

What I missed from the play was Tove's love for nature & the sea. There were hints of it in the play, but there could have been more as Tove chose to live much of her life in the middle of nature, on an island. I think that tells a lot about a person.

Näytelmästä jäin kaipaamaan Toven rakkautta luontoa ja mertaa kohtaan. Siitä annettiin joitakin vinkkejä näytelmässä, mutta mainintoja olisi voinut olla enemmän koska Tove eli suurimman osan elämästään luonnon keskellä, saarella. Mielestäni se kertoo paljon ihmisestä.

I personally thought that the actresses playing Tove both did a fantastic job! In addition, actress Hellen Willberg that plays several roles, e.g. Tove's partner Tuulikki, was really good.

Henkilökohtaisesti olen sitä mieltä, että molemmat Tovea esittävät näyttelijät tekivät loistotyön! Myös näyttelijä Hellen Willberg, joka esittää näytelmässä monta roolia, mm. Toven kumppania Tuulikkia, tekee todella hienon suorituksen.

Quite funny, in my earlier blog post, I associated these keywords with Tove: love, partnership, nature, work, passion, simple life, inner peace, sea, serenity. Two of these I repeated today. However, after seeing the play, I was reminded that family should be one of the words that are strongly linked to the one and only Tove. She truly was an extraordinary person, and continues to fascinate me.

Oli hauskaa huomata, että aikaisemmassa blogikirjoituksessani Tovesta tuli mieleen nämä avainsanat: rakkaus, kumppanuus, luonto, työ, intohimo, vaatimaton elämä, sisäinen rauha, meri, tyyneys. Näistä sanoista, niin toistin kaksi tänään. Huomasin kuitenkin, että aikaisemmin olin unohtanut perheen, jota ei sovi unohtaa kun Tovesta puhutaan. Tove oli todellakin poikkeuksellinen ihminen, ja kiehtoo minua edelleen.
