Flowers in honor of my mother

May the stars carry your sadness away, may the flowers fill your heart with beauty, may hope forever wipe away your tears, and, above all, may silence make you strong.

If my father was a man of birds, my mother was a woman of flowers. Again, as when my father passed away, I would like to use weather conditions as metaphors for feelings. I've always been a person that has very much been affected by the weather so it feels natural for me to link the two. These two weeks have felt like a fog, daze, storm, tempest and even calm weather. This has nothing to do with the weather outside, but more with the feelings inside of me. I've managed to take my baby girl once on a short museum visit, and once to our weekly baby dance lesson after my mother's decease. I know for sure that I couldn't have made it without the genuine kindness I've encountered from friends & family. When a person encounters a loss like this, kindness and compassion are the only things that can help you back to everyday life. However, I've been amazed by the understanding and kindness I've come upon. All the same, I've only started to continue doing things that I once used to think as "normal". Right now it feels like nothing will ever again be normal. From here onwards, everything will feel different. But I must strive to learn to live again, in a new way. I must strive to find my way back to being myself, even though I don't think I'll ever be exactly the same person again.

It's funny how your mind plays tricks on you. Helsinki has received a lot of snow since my mother died, as I mentioned, it started snowing on the day after her death. In wintertime, not many people think of flowers, but they have definitely been on my mind during the last couple of weeks. I've even noticed that one of my orchids at home is getting flowers again, after years of not showing any signs of blooming. I guess it's no wonder since my mother has been on my mind, like she has been ever since I heard the terrible news, and one of my beloved mom's favorite things in the world were just that - flowers. Her favorites were white roses, and they will for sure decorate her funeral. Flowers were an interest that we had in common, and many times I brought her fresh flowers, as well as wooden or fabric souvenirs from my travels in the form of flowers.

On hassua, miten mieli tekee temppuja. Helsinki on saanut hurjan paljon lunta sitten äidin kuoleman.

Right now I cling on to anything and everything that can make me feel better and get me through the day. One could say that I'm in search of inner peace. These weeks it has been flowers, and who knows, they might even help me through this winter as they multiply as we move towards warmer weather.

Do you believe in symbols for people? When you think of your loved ones, do you immediately think of something that reminds you of them?

Uskotko ihmissymbooleihin?

What's your opinion?

  1. It's how it is... no one can ever be the same after such a loss. Nice people can support us, and things help us throughout the day, but missing someone so important will always be inside us... but the nice memories will remain... and the privilege that it was being with your mother... I truly hope that you feel better, it takes time, but your baby girl's smile will be there for you... it helps sharing feelings, your post is poignant :(

  2. our family's dog Jenny who lived together with my parents since 2010 when I moved out left us 8 months ago before turning 15 years old. she was a 100% family member and every day my mom lights a candle for her. 8 months have passed but when I visit my parents I still think Jenny should come out... I know it's not the same what you're going through but when you're a complete dog person then losing one is not easy.
I wish you piece and conciliation and I'm sure your child and fiance will help you the most on your journey. I know you're a smart and strong girl and in time you're going to learn how to live with it.
