The best baby memory book

Helsinki, 13 degrees

I sagans skog där snurrar sagans slända och spinner tråd som blank som solen är. I sagans skog kan nästan allting hända, och nästan allting händer också där!

(free translation from Swedish into English: "In the forrest of fairytales, twirls the fairytale dragonfly and spins the thread as blank as the sun. In the forrest of fairytales almost everything can happen, and actually almost everything does happen there!"

Many of my friends have recently been asking me about what kind of baby memory book I've picked up for my baby girl. When I grew up, I remember looking through my pink baby memory book many times with a smile upon my face. During my pregnancy, the book became important & relevant again, and I read it from cover to cover. However, since 30 years have passed since my book was bought, I was hoping to find something more practical and timeless.

As a huge Moomin fan, my first choice, naturally, would have been the Moomin baby book in Swedish named "Kära barn - boken on dig med Mumin" (Swedish for "Dear child - the book about you with Moomin"). However, it seemed impossible to find this book as it is apparently sold out everywhere (I even checked with its publisher Schildts & Söderströms), so I had to find another option. It's available in Finnish, through e.g. Adlibris, though, but that was not an option for me as I, as a Swedish speaking Finn, wanted to find a baby memory book in Swedish. After asking around and reading a lot on diverse online chats & forums, I eventually found an alternative: Margot Henrikson's & Marie Helenelund's "Mina första år" (Swedish for "My first years").

Suurena muumifanina, toivoin löytäväni muumivauvakirjan. Toiveena oli löytää ruotsinkielinen "Kära barn - boken on dig med Mumin", joka suomeksi kulkee nimellä "Muumilaakson vauvakirja" (19€). Ruotsinkielinen kirja oli kuitenkin loppuunmyyty (tarkistin asian jopa kustantajalta Schildts & Söderströmsiltä), joten minun oli pakko löytää kyseiselle kirjalle vastine muualta. Luettuani lukuisia nettikeskustelupalstoja löysin varteenotettavan vaihtoehdon: Margot Henriksonin & Marie Helenelundin "Mina första år".

In the end, I bought both this book and the Finnish version of the Moomin baby book as I was even considering translating the whole book into Swedish at one point. Having received both of the books at home, I must admit that I couldn't be happier with this misfortune: Henrikson's & Helenelund's book's content & layout is far better than the one of the Moomin book and finally, I didn't even consider using the Moomin baby book. I will keep it, though, mainly for its beautiful illustrations.

So what is it that makes, in my opinion, this baby memory book better than any other? / Mikä siis tekee tästä vauvakirjasta niin hyvän?

1) It's a reasonably priced (€17,30 on e.g. Adlibris) fill in -book about one's pregnancy and the child's two first years - usually baby memory books are made for a much shorter period / Kirja on kohtuuhintainen (21,90€ esim. Adlibriksilta) ja se kattaa raskausajan sekä lapsen kaksi ensimmäistä vuotta

2) It has useful & handy pockets to fill with cards, photos and other memories - I've never seen this feature in any other book of its kind / Kirjassa on kätevät säilytystaskut korttien, papereiden ja muiden aarteiden tallentamiseen - en ole vastaavaa nähnyt muissa vauvakirjoissa

3) Through blank pages, it offers the possibility to add own photographs & write down memories + it's printed on acid-free paper so the memories last longer / Kirjassa on tukevat pahvisivut valokuvia ja kirjoituksia varten + kirja on painettu hapottomalle paperille, jotta muistot säilyisivät kauemmin

4) It includes beautiful pictures, Swedish poems and lullabys for children / Kirja sisältää tunnelmallisia valokuvia

5) It's spiral bound & has an elastic band that holds the book together + it's easy to navigate in thanks to its division feature (the 144-page-book has different sections) / Kirjalla on kätevä kierreselkä ja kiitos kuminauhan se pysyy kasassa + 144-sivuista kirjaa on helppoa selata, koska se on jaettu kahdeksaan eri osioon

What do you think makes the best baby memory book? Did you have one as a child? Help me make the book's content even better - what memory would you have liked to find in your baby memory book?

Mikä mielestäsi on tärkeätä vauvakirjassa? Oliko sinulla vauvakirjaa pienenä? Auta minua tekemään kirja vielä paremmaksi - minkä muiston sinä toivoisit löytäväsi vauvakirjasta?

What's your opinion?

  1. Oh, the book you wanted was sold out... sad, but good that you found some others; I didn't know your book would be in Swedish, I thought about Finnish. Moomin is always a success! After all, I loved the book you chose, and I loved that you share the footprint, some photos with us! I remember reading my book as well, it's so important!
