Finding the perfect little black dress: Kude

Helsinki, 17 degrees

Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.

Incredibly enough, I've soon been a mother for two months! You know what they say: time flies when you're having a good time! One thing that I've noticed as a new mom, is how much I appreciate good quality in things. Maybe because time is at a premium right now. This concerns also my clothing: as I don't have a lot of time to think about what to put on in the morning, it's increasingly important to have good essentials, so-called cornerstones, in my wardrobe.

Aika uskomatonta. Kohta olen ollut äiti jo kahden kuukauden ajan! Kyllä aika rientää kun on hauskaa! Olen huomannut uutena äitinä, että arvostan entistä enemmn laatua. Ehkä koska aikani on kortilla.

Late summer is an exciting time of the year as we're heading towards autumn and fall fashion! Recently I collaborated with Finnish clothing label Kude, so while waiting for fall, I got to choose two pieces from Kude's collection for myself! In the photos of this blog post, I wore them with my H&M headscarf / foulard & sandals, and my wooden Aarni watch. Out of Kude's collection, I chose the black Perho dress and the asymmetrical Freia Design's Vindur earrings because I was looking for the perfect little black dress, and earrings to go with it. In these photos, I took my new key pieces out on a walk to the beautiful wooden district of Vallila.

Kude, which stands for the word textile in Finnish, is since 2013 a local clothing label that concentrates on timeless everyday pieces. Kude's pieces fit every body type, are easy to combine and stand the test of time. Kude was established by clothing professional Outi Pakarinen, who got fed up with the clothing industry after working for several years in different clothing companies. Consumption culture and disposable fashion started to feel overwhelming and the idea for their own company started to develop within her. In short, Kude stands for quality, and ethical & ecological values. The clothes are designed for real women, not merely for mannequins.

The Perho (direct translation of the Finnish word: butterfly) dress, which is designed in Finland but made in Estonia, is femininely draped and a true find as it's both stunning and incredibly comfortable! Talk about a wardrobe cornerstone! I especially love its round neckline, and floating hem & sleeves!

Perho -mekko on luottomekko jokaisen naisen kaappiin! Mekko on uskomattoman mukava päällä! Pidin mekon pyöreästä pääntiestä, sekä väljästä helmasta & liehuvista hihoista.

The Vindur earrings I chose are designed and manufactured by Finnish FreiaDesign that makes unique textile jewelry out of recycled materials. I love how light they feel, and how they remind me of leaves floating in the wind. Vindur is actually an Icelantic word that means wind breeze. The name Freia, on the other hand, is linked to Norse mythology – Freyja, the goddess of love and beauty.

Suunnittelija Frida Koskimies on kertonut, ettei koskaan tiedä mitä värejä löytää kierrätysmateriaaleista, joten välillä hänen on pakko tehdä luovia ratkaisuja saadakseen haluamansa sävyn. Kankaiden kiiltoaste ja läpikuultavuus luo valmiissa korussa uuden ulottuvuuden – valon ja varjon leikin. Vindur on islantia ja tarkoittaa tuulenvirettä. Freia -nimi taas viittaa tietenkin viikinkimytologian Freijaan, rakkauden ja kauneuden jumalattareen.

  1. I think I have a couple of black dresses but I can't quite say they're perfect. and I haven't even looked for the perfect one, at least not yet. but how cool that your dress was made in Estonia! it's a lovely dress that goes so well with the earrings and this foulard, which is my favourite piece here by the way. gives colour and looks especially cool!

    1. Haha, I knew you would notice that, and I'm glad you did. The Finnish fashion industry is actually quite closely linked to Estonian production nowadays, I don't know if you have noticed that?! At least two blog posts are still coming up on this topic!
Thank you for your kind comment concerning the dress, it really is a great find!
