10 reasons to visit the new Helsinki City Museum, part 1

Helsinki, 20 degrees

If you don't know history, then you don't know anything. You are a leaf that doesn't know it is part of a tree.

On the last day of work before my maternity leave, the Helsinki City Museum celebrated its opening party! Not a bad way to start the first break that I've had from work (work for the City of Helsinki I might add) in eight years! The renewed museum strives to be an overall experience combining milieus, exhibitions and indoor decorations telling about the daily life of Helsinki. The thorough renovation has turned five old buildings + a modern museum extension built between them into a unique museum complex. I've visited the museum now already three times, during one single week, which actually tells about its best features - its low threshold & hospitality. Here are ten reasons why I think you should visit the museum.

Olen jo ehtinyt vierailemaan museossa kolmesti - yhden viikon aikana! Se, jos jotain kertoo museon parhaimmista piirteistä - kyse on matalan kynnyksen paikasta, joka huokuu vieraanvaraisuutta! Tässä kymmenen syytä miksi myös sinun kannattaa vierailla museossa.

1) Helsinki - a museum about my beloved home city where heaven meets the sea is a must-see! / Helsinki - museo, joka kertoo rakkaasta kotikaupungistani & Suomen pääkaupungista, on mielestäni pakko kokea itse!

2) always free entry / aina vapaa pääsy

3) lounge space x 2 - the renewed museum has two lounge spaces that I loved: one on the ground floor with Finnish artist Jasmin Anoschkin's lovely animal art works and one with swings, a green wall & the wall text "fall in love with Helsinki" / loungetila x 2 - uudistetussa museossa on kaksi ihanaa loungetilaa: katutason aula, jossa Jasmin Anoschkinin eläinhahmot seikkailevat sekä ihastuttava Rakastu Helsinkiin -lounge, jossa on keinuja & viherseinä

4) Time Machine & virtual reality glasses - the photographs of famous Helsinki photographer Signe Brander come to life with a little bit of help from the latest technology / Aikakone & virtuaalitodellisuuslasit - Signe Branderin sadan vuoden takaiset valokuvat heräävät eloon uuden teknologian avulla

5) city maps & miniature model - as you know, I love Helsinki maps so no wonder that I liked the fact that the museum was filled with them! I also loved the miniature model of Helsinki of 1878 / kaupunkikartat & pienoismalli - kuten olen aikaisemmin kertonut, niin rakastan Helsinki-karttoja, eli ei ole mikään ihme että pidän myös kaupunginmuseon lukuisista kaupunkikartoista! Helsingin valitut palat -näyttelyn helmiin kuuluu myös monen kaupunkilaisen kaipaama pienoismalli vuoden 1878 Helsingistä

What do you look for in a museum? How often do you visit city museums?

Mitä toivot museolta? Mikä takaa mielestäsi hyvän museokäynnin?

  2. I think it's so true when people say that pregnant women look luminous and you do, so beautiful! I have Helsinki on my list for ages, and this museum goes to the list! I was sold when you wrote the words "museum", that I love, and "where heaven meets the sea", what I also love!

  4. seems like something definitely worth visiting when in Helsinki. and how cool that it's free of charge! museums can be pretty pricey sometimes. we actually really like city/town museums and for example last year in October visited one in Limbaži, Latvia. it was small but very interesting and I'm sorry I haven't shared it in my blog. I definitely should!
