Stories of Finnish Art

Helsinki, 1 degree

Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.

This week I had the lucky chance, thanks to my work, to see the Finnish National Gallery Ateneum's exhibition called "Stories of Finnish Art" before it opened for the public on Friday. The exhibition is interesting in many ways, but especially for three reasons: it showcases Finnish art history in a beautiful & fresh way, it introduces Helene Schjerfbeck's delicate drawings with new Japanese technology and it returns the art gallery to its roots in the sense that Ateneum has collaborated with two Dutch exhibition designers that have once again combined sculptures with paintings and are introducing darker exhibition walls and rich art hanging - something we have been missing in Finland during the last decades. However, going through historical pictures of the gallery one can quickly see that this was how art was initially showcased here in Helsinki; in groups of paintings and art. Nevertheless, this feature is the most revolutionary of the whole exhibition and gives even locals a chance to see the beloved Finnish masterpieces in a new light!

How well do you know Finnish art or its history? Do you have a favorite artist or piece of art?

Miten hyvin tunnet kotimaista taidetta tai taidehistoriaa? Onko sinulla suosikkitaiteilijaa tai taideteosta?

    1. Remember that we can't all be good at everything, and there are so many forms of art out there - not merely drawing :) However, I feel that art is something important for our souls!
