Easter 2016 & Daylight Saving Time

Helsinki, 5 degrees

Easter is…
Joining in a birdsong,
Eying an early sunrise,
Smelling yellow daffodils,
Unbolting windows and doors,
Skipping through meadows,
Cuddling newborns,
Hoping, believing,
Reviving spent life,
Inhaling fresh air,
Sprinkling seeds along furrows,
Tracking in the mud.
Easter is the soul’s first taste of spring.

As I mentioned in my previous blog post, for me Easter is a true spring celebration! As I have reflected upon it some more over these last couple of days that I have been off work, I thought I would share the three things that immediately come to my mind when I think about this holiday.

Kuten mainitsin edellisessä blogikirjoituksessani, pääsiäinen on mielestäni kevään juhla!

Time - Aika

This Easter was luxurious with in theory two days off work. Having said this, due to the nature of my work, I'm not really ever "off work" and both days off have included work tasks but at least I was off in theory. Already that makes a huge difference. Time for me stands for the possibility to reflect and recover. Time to read, write and relax.

This year, Easter also occurs during the advancing of clocks that has to do with DST. Daylight saving time (DST) or summer time is the practice of advancing clocks during summer months by one hour so that evening daylight lasts an hour longer, while sacrificing normal sunrise times. Typically, regions with summer time adjust clocks forward one hour close to spring and adjust them backward in the autumn to standard time. Most of the world's countries don't use daylight saving time, but it is common in Europe and North America. Most of the locals have an opinion on this matter, as it changes the rythymn of life. I actually prefer summer time, as we get more light! Today we already have almost 13 hours of daylight - something we only dream about in winter!

Traditions & family - Perhe & perinteet

Easter is also all about spending time with the family. This Easter, we have been discussing the fact that our family is increasing in number in merely two and a half months! How exciting! As the baby is now kicking on a daily basis, it feels very concrete.

Pääsiäinen on myös perheen aika. Tänä vuonna keskustelimme paljon meidän tulevasta perheenjäsenestä. Uskomatonta, että syntymään on enää alle kolme kuukautta! Jännittävää! Vauva potkii tällä hetkellä päivittäin, mikä tekee odotuksesta konkreettisemman.

Our family also just received a new member as my fiancé became an uncle for the first time. This Easter, I got to come up with a new term: childhood family. As me & fiancé are building a family for ourselves, I have come up with this term to be able to separate that family from the one I grew up with.

This Easter, I have spend time with my so called childhood family consisting nowadays (since my father has passed away) of my mother and her husband as well as my sister (+usually my sister's husband), and my fiancé's childhood family consisting nowadays (since his father has passed away) of his mother and two brothers with their partners and children. Now that is what I call a family-rich holiday!

Helsinki

Easter also stands for city exploring! This year during Easter, I visited both Helsinki's Winter Garden as you can see in this blog post's photos, and spa hotel Långvik that you might remember from this earlier blog post? The spa hotel is located merely 30 minutes outside of Helsinki, so it's very convenient to head there for some good food & relaxation.

What does Easter stand for for you? What are its most important features?

Mitä pääsiäinen tarkoittaa sinulle? Mitä puolia pääsiäisessä arvostat eniten?

What's your opinion?

  2. DST and advancing our clocks is something I (and everyone I know) find pretty stupid and unnecessary. we have 24 h in a day with or without it so I hope one day we will get rid of that practice.
anyway, for us Easter usually means some Kinder Eggs and catkins and that's pretty much it. this year we actually wanted to colour some real eggs too but unfortunately didn't have enough time in our day (advancing our clocks didn't help us either, hehe).
I really enjoyed reading your thoughts on Easter by the way. such posts where you write about your simple everyday life and thoughts are my favourites. oh and thank you for visiting my blog! I hope I can publish a fresh post with heaps of photos today after work. I will also open my reading list and see the ones you have recently posted :)
