Giveaway: Finnish design safety reflector

Helsinki, 16 degrees

Suddenly I grasped what was happening - they were all trying to save me. I never thought I was worth saving.

Happy Safety Reflector Day! So what is a safety reflector, you might ask? A safety reflector is a retro-reflecting accessory intended mainly for pedestrians and runners. You might have seen one in the form of reflective stripes, safety vests and/or clothing that are usually worn by road workers and/or rescue workers. So why would you need one? A safety reflector aids visibility of a person on the street or road, as it reflects light. In short, it's a lifesaver.

Miksi? Koska kaikista jalankulkijoiden kuolemantapauksista lähes puolet tapahtuu pimeällä tai hämärässä.

When I made a Pinterest search with the word "reflector", I could only find six matches, out of which five were from Finland. However, when I typed "safety reflector", the results were better. Still, most of the results came from the North. So I think it's safe to say that we are talking about something very Finnish, or at most Nordic. According to road safety authority Liikenneturva, as much as every second Finn uses a safety reflector! No wonder, as the safety reflector is one of the many wonderful Finnish inventions there are. Now, as days are getting shorter in the amount of daylight, the importance of safety reflectors increases. Why? If a pedestrian wears a reflector tag, a car driver will see him/her from a distance of 300 meters versus 100 meters without one.

Liikenneturvan mukaan joka toinen suomalainen käyttää heijastinta (51 %). Eikä mikään ihme, onhan se hurjan hieno suomalainen keksintö! Heijastin lisää jalankulkijan näkyvyyttä ja turvallisuutta pimeällä liikuttaessa. Nyt kun päivät pimenevät, heijastimien merkitys kasvaa. Heijastimen avulla auto näkee sinut 300 metrin päässä, kun ilman heijastinta näkvyvyys on vain 100 metriä.

Recently I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek and see how safety reflectors are made at one of Finland's leading safety reflector factories called Saintex. The factory is based in Helsinki, which made the visit even more interesting as I love visiting factories in my home city! I support all factories as they showcase how much knowledge there is and how much is still being made by people in my beloved capital city Helsinki. Saintex has also made the safety reflector into a fashion statement by constantly introducing new beautiful Finnish designs.

I had no idea how safety reflectors were made so it was really interesting to see all the materials & layers, molds, machines, standards, CE marking, and designs that go into the making process! Learn more about how to correctly use a safety reflector here. Of course, I found Saintex's dragonfly safety reflectors and spent the most time in front of their mold. Since your safety is important to me, I'm delighted to announce an autumn giveaway with Saintex's LifeSaver Finland in this blog post! The prize is a safety reflector of your choice from LifeSaver Finland's selection.

Palkintona toimii vapaavalintainen heijastin Saintexin heijastinkaupan valikoimasta!

  2. I really find it very important and I was hit by a car once... true, it was not because the lack of the reflector, it was the guys fault (he decided to ride rear on a street it was forbidden), but I am sure that a reflector can save lives!

  3. wow, they do have the coolest safety reflectors! I just checked their Instagram page and am amazed how cool a simple safety reflector can look like. for example the one with Bambi - how cute!
unfortunately I can't take part in your giveaway this time because I don't have an Instagram account but still, when it comes to styling a safety reflector I usually wear mine attached to my handbag. but most of the time I use my car to get from one point to another.
