10 things you didn't know about New York City

Helsinki, 5 degrees

New York provides not only a continuing excitation but also a spectacle that is continuing.

I'm back! For a city girl like this Helsinkiana, New York was by far one of my favorite urban destinations so far - most of all thanks to its friendly and welcoming people! The trip, which seemed difficult to believe until the moment when we sat on the actual airplane, was a long-time dream come true. I will post a number of posts about my trip but in this blog post, I would like to share with you the surprises I had during the trip.

Tämä helsinkiläistyttönen on palannut kotiin! Kaupunkilaiselle New York on ehdottomasti yksi suosikkikaupunkikohteistani - suurin kiitos siitä kuuluu kaupungin ihanille ja ystävällisille ihmisille! Matka, jota en meinannut uskoa todeksi ennen kun istuin lentokoneessa, oli pitkän unelman tulos. Tulen varmasti kirjoittamaan matkasta useita kirjoituksia, mutta tässä blogikirjoituksessa haluan keskittyä yllätyksiin, jota Nykki tarjosi.

1) Manhattan is not completely covered with skyscrapers. / Manhattanilla on muutakin kaupunkimaisemaa kuin pilvenpiirtäjät.

I guess that the pictures I'd seen of the island have always been of specific parts of it, mainly Midtown and the Financial District so that is why I had the impression that it would be filled with skyscrapers, kind of like Hong Kong, and one of the first thing we noticed was that it has districts with also significantly lower buildings (with about three floors).

Oletan, että ne kuvat mitä olin ennen matkaa nähnyt, olivat saaneet minut uskomaan että Manhattan olisi tupaten täynnä pilvenpiirtäjiä (kuten esim. Hong Kong).

2) Americans eat an immense amount of eggs! / Amerikkalaiset syövät huikean määrän kananmunia!

Even though I thought I liked eggs before going on the trip, the amount of eggs in different forms that were eaten in New York made me boycott eggs for some time when I got home. They are not only eaten at breakfast, but throughout the day.

3) 4/5 of New York's boroughs are actually islands. / 4/5 New Yorkin kaupunginosista ovat saaria.

One of the first things we heard after arrival was the fact that only one, out of New York's five boroughs, the Bronx, is actually a part of the mainland. However, one rarely hear that New York is a city of islands, right? We stayed in New Jersey, and were also very surprised about how close it was to downtown New York City thanks to the Lincoln underwater Tunnel.

4) The variations in New York weather. / New Yorkin vaihtelevat sääolosuhteet.

During our 8-day-long trip, we noticed how unpredictable the weather in the City truly is. I usually dressed myself in layers, as the temperatures shifted during the day and from day to day with 10-25 degrees during merely one week!

8-päiväisen matkamme aikana, huomasimme miten vaihteleva sääolosuhteet Isossa Omenassa oikeastaan ovat. Turvauduin kerrospukeutumiseen, koska päivän aikana lämpötila saattoi nousta 10-25 asteella! Viikon aikana koimme mielestäni kolme sääkautta: loppukesän, syksyn ja alkutalven!

5) How good & versatile American TV truly is. / Amerikkalaisen TV:n taso & monimuotoisuus.

I had heard that American TV is good, but I had no idea. There were quality morning and talk shows, TV shows and movies all day long! One of my new found favorites is Live with Kelly & Michael.

Uusi löytö oli aamuohjelma nimeltään Live with Kelly & Michael

6) The quantity of spontaneous music performances! / Spontaanien musiikkiesitysten määrä!

I loved all the music we randomly experienced in the City: music performances in Central Park, the Staten Island Ferry Terminal and on the streets. And the quality - they were so good! This is how urban culture is supposed to be, so inspiring!

7) Horse carriages in Central Park. / Central Parkin hevoskärryt.

I was surprised to see so many horse carriages in Central Park (so many that they actually stood in line), as I thought it was something one would have to specially order. I was even more so of their price: €3-5/minute!

8) The amount of Starbucks cafes in town. / Starbucks -kahviloiden määrä.

Before the trip, I imagined that I would see McDonald's & Burger King in every street corner of New York, but we saw much less of these two than Starbucks cafes. I didn't see any shop/cafe more often than Starbucks! I lost my Starbucks virginity during the trip, but wasn't that impressed by the coffee shop. The free wifi was my main reason to visit the café.

9) How little SATC is visible in New York. / Sinkkuelämää -sarjan näkyvyys kaupungissa.

Before the trip, I assumed that I would see a lot of mentions of the TV show in the city (at least in souvenir shops), but I only saw a couple of them (on TV show tours and in Magnolia Bakery that is featured in the show), and actually not more than other movies/TV shows set in the City. This was a huge surprise, as the TV show is one of the main references of New York for many, many people. Also, the locations of the TV show were no "tourist attractions" in the sense that we were almost alone at them whereas other parts of the City were really crowded.

10) The City's functionality. / Nykin toimivuus.

One of my biggest surprises was how well New York functioned as a city. It was easy to orientate in the City, and use public transportation. Security personnel was visible in as good as all places and people were always told at big events, like the hockey game we went to, where to go next. The subway & buses were also surprisingly clean. However, New York did not have any buses after midnight (so the city does sleep) & the City has no one-day ticket for its subway, which I found odd.

Have you been to New York? What were the surprises you encountered?

Oletko käynyt Nykissä? Mitkä asiat kaupungissa yllättivät sinut?
