10 reasons why I love Helsinki trams

Helsinki, 10 degrees

Your mind is your tram; it will take you any station you wish.

As long as I can remember, I've lived along the tram line of Helsinki. We moved to the district of Munkkiniemi when I was only four years old, so I guess it's no wonder that I don't remember much about the time before that. Ever since, one of my favorite characteristics of Helsinki, are its trams. Here is why:

1) the sound of the tram makes me feel nostalgic and at home - I love the sound of the city as it quiets down, leaving only the sound of trams passing by / ratikan ääni saa minut nostalgiseksi ja saa minut tuntemaan itseni kotoisaksi - rakastan kun kaupunki hiljenee, ja ainoa kuuluva ääni on ratikat

2) curious as I am, I love observing the city through the windows of a tram - my favorite spot is in front of the back window of the tram from where there are the best views / koska olen utelias, tykkään seurata kaupungin vilinää ratikan ikkunasta - suosikki-ikkunani on ratikan takaikkuna koska sieltä on parhaimmat näkymät

3) the relaxed mentality that if you miss one tram, you can always take next one (in Helsinki, the trams run every 5-10 minutes depending on the line, day and time) / leppoisa ajatus siitä, että jos missaan yhden ratikan, voin aina ottaa seuraavan

4) trams are a part of Helsinki's urban street view since 1891 - it has been operating for 124 years - 95 years before my birth year / ratikat ovat olleet osa Helsingin katukuvaa jo vuodesta 1891 eli 124:n vuoden ajan, jo 95 vuotta ennen minun syntymää

5) Helsinki has one of the widest tram systems in Europe, and I always say that we locals prefer to stay above ground and not go underground (Helsinki only has one underground line) + the Helsinki network has remained Finland's only tramway network / Helsingillä on yksi Euroopan laajimmista ratikkaverkostoista ja sanonkin aina että me helsinkiläiset suosimme maan yläpuolella ajelua (koska meillä on vain yksi metrolinja) + Helsinki on tänä päivänä ainoa kaupunki Suomessa, josta löytyy ratikka

6) The trams are the main means of transport in the Helsinki city center - 56,7 million trips were made in 2013 alone / ratikat ovat Helsingin keskustan alueen yleisin kulkuväline - 56,7 miljoonaa ratikkamatkaa tehtiin vuonna 2013

7) The Helsinki system is one of the oldest electrified tram networks in the world! / Helsingin ratikkajärjestelmä on yksi vanhimmista maailmassa!

8) In 2013, approximately 38 km of double track and 288 tram stops were in passenger traffic use in Helsinki - Helsinki City Transport (HKL) has up to 124 tram units that can be used in scheduled passenger service / Vuonna 2013, Helsingillä oli n. 38 km:n verran ratikkakiskoja ja 288 ratikkapysäkkiä olivat käytössä - tänä päivänä HKL:llä on 124 ratikkaa käytössä

9) I find tram depots to be very atmospheric - as of 2010, there are four tram depots in Helsinki: Töölö, Vallila, Koskela and Pasila / mielestäni ratikkahallit ovat tunnelmallisia - vuodesta 2010, Helsingillä on neljä hallia: Töölö, Vallila, Koskela ja Pasila

10) Helsinki has tried fun tram pop-ups with events onboard; everything from fashion trams to culture trams + there is of course also the well-known pub tram named Spårakoff! / Helsinki on kokeillut hauskoja ratikka -pop upeja, kuten muotiratikka ja kulttuuriratikka + pubiratikka Spårakoff tietysti!

What's your opinion?

  1. I like trams very much too, and like you, I also prefer over the ground, not really tube-subway. I like to see the city, and I loved to know more about Helsinki! It's lovely, I really want to visit the city!
