Business trip: Oslo, Norway 2/3

Helsinki, -2 degrees

Authors can write stories without people assuming that they are autobiographies, but songwriters and poets are often considered to be the characters in their works. I like Michelangelo's vision, 'I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.

To continue my previous blog post, I wanted to return to Oslo, Norway and its Vigeland Park. See my previous blog post about my business trip here. In this park, the most famous, yet tiniest, sculpture is called the Angry Boy, in Norwegian Sinnataggen. According to the Vigeland Museum, in recent years there has been an increasing tendency that visitors in The Vigeland Park want to be photographed while holding the Angry Boy’s hand. This has made the hand shiny due to wear and tear, and traces of Gustav Vigeland's modelling have disappeared. The Angry Boy (1928) is cast in bronze. Therefore, I did not touch the sculpture's hand but admired it from a distance. It reminded me of Brussels' Manneken Pis, but there was something unique about it. I thought he was angry because he did not get any attention from his parents, but do you know the story maybe? He kind of reminded me of one of my friends, who as a little girl used to tighten her fists when she got angry but didn't give a sound.

According to Daily Mail, the sculptures in the Vigeland Park are the weirdest in the world. I'm not sure about that, but they sure are special and beautiful! Among the most eye-catching artwork are men battling babies, women being forcefully carried away and piles of bodies on top of each other. All the statues are centered on humans and illustrate relationships between men, women, adults and children.

Besides the Angry Boy, the most popular attraction lays at the highest point in the park. The high Monolith is made up of 121 human figures rising towards the sky. The Monolith is carved from a single piece of granite and is designed to represent man's desire to become close to the spiritual world. The humans embracing each other are carved as if they are being carried towards salvation. I don't know what it was about this point, but somehow the sculptures made people quiet and thoughtful. There was something about them that made me reflect on nature, relationships and life. And you know how much I love that, so this is a definite recommendation if you're heading to Oslo, Norway! Of course, I took so some selfies with the sculptures.

Vihaisen pojan lisäksi, puiston suosituin kohta on korkein tasanne josta löytyy monoliitti.

How do you feel about sculptures? Do you like this kind of art, in general? How about when traveling?

Mitä mieltä olet veistoksista? Pidätkö kuvanveistotaiteesta? Entäs käytkö katsomassa veistoksia kun matkustelet?

  4. Amazing post, Elisabeth! I always wanted to go to this park, for many years, and somehow never did, but maybe one day :) And I wanted to go to Oslo mainly to be at this park. I didn't know the story about "piling up to the spiritual world" and it makes a lot of sense! Now I am even more looking forward to visiting it! Thanks for such a great post and the great explanations!

  8. now those indeed are some special sculptures! like you said, maybe not strange but definitely special and bold. when it comes to travelling we are interested in architecture, botanical gardens, animals, food (and more) but art is somehow not in our list usually. I guess paintings, sculptures and such aren't just our thing.

    Maiken,

    1. Oh, that is interesting. Here, however, art is combined with the park, which made it even better!
