Business trip: Oslo, Norway 1/3 + Valentine's Day

Helsinki, 0 degrees

Now in the beginning of February, I visited Oslo because of the New Nordic Food II (Ny Nordisk Mat) program's workshop. New Nordic Food II is a communication program under the Nordic Council of Ministers that promotes Nordic food in the region and internationally. NNF II ran during the period 2010-2014 and now all the Nordic countries met to discuss how to continue the Nordic collaboration after the program.

This is the first blog post out of three about my visit to Oslo. In this blog post, I want to introduce the Vigeland Park. The Vigeland Park is the world's largest sculpture park made by one single artist. It's also one of Norway's most popular tourist attractions. The unique sculpture park is Gustav Vigeland's lifework with more than 200 sculptures in bronze, granite, and wrought iron. Vigeland was also himself in charge of the design and architectural layout of the park. The Vigeland Park was mainly completed during the period 1939-1949. I really liked this park, and I happened to visit it on an evening when there was a stunning sunset! I thought I would share these first images with you from the park on Valentine's Day because they showcase friendship and partnership.

Rather than the tradition that dedicates Valentine's Day merely to love and romance, Finns celebrate all of their friends and loved ones. In Finnish, the name of the day is, in fact, ystävänpäivä = "Friend's Day". We Swedish-speaking Finns have made our own version of it, "vändag" even though the day, in general, is called "Alla hjärtans dag" in Swedish. Happy Valentine's Day!

When someone loves you, the way they talk about you is different. You feel safe and comfortable.

How do you celebrate Valentine's Day? Have you been to Oslo, Norway?

Miten vietät ystävänpäivää? Oletko itse käynyt Oslossa?

What's your opinion?

  1. I don't think I've had a valentines day off in years. So it kind of ruins the fun of the holiday. Daisy and I will do something before or after the 14th every year

    1. But you can also do something in the evening? Plus, this year it was a Saturday! Do you also work on Saturdays?

  4. I haven't been to Oslo but have visited Tromsø, Alta and many more in the northern part of Norway. I hope one day I can go back with my fiance because Norway really felt like home during those almost 2 weeks I spent there years ago. so it's really nice to read your posts about places I haven't yet discovered :)

    Maiken,

    1. Yes, I highly recommend Oslo and I think it's going to change a lot in the upcoming years as they're building so many new places there.
