Golden blini

Helsinki, 2 degrees

The beginning of the year asks for tasty dinners! As I have mentioned before, Helsinki has the most interesting food culture of the Nordic countries as it has influences both from East and West. An example of the Eastern influences are the blini. The beautiful blini, round, thin pancakes of Russian origin, are a worldwide phenomenon of a pancake. As they are round and golden, they symbolize the sun and promise of a new beginning as the long winter comes to an end. The Finnish blini are smaller than the Russian ones and we have different toppings as well. When I made them, we used as toppings: smoked salmon, dill, salmon roe, sour cream, honey, mushroom salad and smoked reindeer cream cheese. You'll find the recipe for blini here. Blini are irresistible while still fresh, straight from the pan! The blini season continues in Helsinki throughout January.

Have you ever tried this treat? What do you usually feast upon in January?

Millä tavalla itse nautit blineistä? Mikä on suosikkilisukkeesi?

  2. I don't use this word "blini" very often, almost not at all. "crepes" and "pancakes" are the most common words here in Estonia (it's "pannkook" in Estonian ;). and pancakes are very popular among Estonians, a regular dish. we make them like once or twice a month but some families have those "pancake Sundays" for example. well and after seeing your delicious dish and writing and thinking about it I feel like having some pancakes, haha. maybe this weekend I let E cook some :P

    1. But pancakes/crepes are sweet and blini aren't, that's the difference :)
