DIY: Christmas tree ornaments

Helsinki, -3 degrees

Christmas waves a magic wand over this world and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.

I'm writing to you on the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, winter solstice or midwinter that is! After the winter solstice, the days to follow will begin to be lighter for longer as the Earth tilts back towards the sun. So we are heading towards lighter times! Today I started out at my hairdresser as you could see on Facebook. After that, I returned home as I had an important mission in front of me! Lately, there has been a Christmas tree ornament trend spreading in Finland, and it seems that there is nothing stopping it! Just a couple of days ago, the trend has caused about fifty tagged photos (hashtag: kastehelmikoristelu) on Instagram, and today the number was already 82! Therefore, I'm filling you in on a local hot potato with this blog post, and of course, I'm adding my own twist to it!

Tänään on talvipäivänseisaus, eli vuoden lyhyin päivä. Kyse on tietysti #kastehelmikoristelu - joulukuusenkoristeista! Tähän mennessä Instassa on jo 82 taggattua kuvaa kyseisestä villityksestä, ja luku senkun kasvaa päivä päivältä! Keksin myös lisätä trendiin oman vivahteen!

The trend started in November when Kaisa from No home without you came up with the idea of making Christmas tree ornaments out of clay using Finnish Iittala's Kastehelmi candle holders as a press. And now she has inspired a lot of people, including me! So today, I spent about 1½ hours listening to Christmas classic songs while I made unique ornaments! I also came up with my own idea: Hobstar ornaments! You can find my blog post about my beloved Hobstar glasses here. I'm going to give my self-made ornaments to my mother as a Christmas gift.

Villitys, tai oikeastaan ilmiö, sai alkunsa marraskuussa kun No home without you:n Kaisa keksi tehdä muotoilumassasta joulukuusenkoristeita Iittalan Kastehelmi -sarjan tuotteita hyödyntäen!

Have you ever made your own Christmas tree ornaments? What kind of ornaments do you like?

Oletko koskaan tehnyt itse joulukuusenkoristeita? Millaisista koristeista sinä pidät?

What's your opinion?

  1. What a lovely idea! I have never made my own ornaments before - but this is such a great thing to do. They look absolutely beautiful :)

  2. nope, haven't made them by myself, at least not as an adult I think. but it's very cool what you have done with clay here. very very cool! and I'm sure your mom will love it too. my favourite is the one you have made using the crystal-like glass. those countless triangles are pretty awesome! oh and I will probably show our Christmas tree in a future blog post.
