Work & love

Helsinki, 16 degrees

Some women choose to follow men, and some women choose to follow their dreams. If you're wondering which way to go, remember that your career will never wake up and tell you that it doesn't love you anymore.

The other day at the hairdresser I realized when I started talking about it that one blog post is long-overdue - the one about the Tove100 press trip that I organized on behalf of my work place together with some organizational partners. Even though I have mentioned my work many times on this blog, it's mainly focused on lifestyle issues. However, this press trip was personally so special to me, that it needs its own blog post on my blog. This was a trip that I'll cherish for my whole lifetime. So if you appreciate the artist and author Tove Jansson, carry on reading, if not, then maybe this is not a blog post for you.

The press trip was organized in the beginning of August and ran for four days. Four very intensive days I can tell you! The press trip was organized for eight international print press journalists from all over the world, ranging from Japan and Hong Kong to UK, Germany and Russia. As a hostess of this trip I was privileged enough to go to the premiere of a documentary film about Tove, visit her studio, go on a guided Tove100 themed walking tour in Helsinki, try the Art Menu at restaurant Kappeli that combined Tove's art with food, visit the National Art Gallery Ateneum and see the Tove Jansson exhibition, visit the Arabia Factory and see the Moomin Mug exhibition, see two Tove related exhibitions in Porvoo, visit her summer cottage on Klovharun Island, visit Pellinki's local food shop where she bought her groceries during summertime and see a live Groke (a character out of Tove's moomin books). But these are just details of incredible experiences.

Yhtenä matkan emäntänä olin etuoikeutettu kokemaan uskomattomia asioita: käydä Fången i Mumindalen -dokumenttielokuvan ensi-illassa, vierailla Toven ateljeessa, käydä Tove100 -teemaisella kävelykierroksella Helsingissä, maistaa Kappelin Taidemenuta jossa yhdistellään Toven taidetta ruokaan, käydä Ateneumissa Tove Janssonin näyttelyssä, vierailla Arabian tehtaalla ja nähdä Muumi-mukit näyttely, nähdä kaksi Tove-aiheista näyttelyä Porvoossa, käydä Klovharun saarella Pellingin edustalla ja Pellingin paikallisessa kyläkaupassa jossa Tovekin aikoinaan teki ostoksia. Ja näinhän minä myös ihka oikean Mörön! Mutta nämä ovat vain viikon yksityiskohtia.

Most importantly during this particular week, I learned a lot about life and myself thanks to Tove. By preparing myself for the trip, I read her biography and so I could during this week have long almost philosophical discussions with the journalists that were as passionate about Tove and her way of thinking as I am. Thanks to these discussions I had many epiphanies throughout the week that I wrote down in my notebook and will now share with you.

We all want to know ourselves and find our place. When it comes to Tove, these are the keywords I collected: love, partnership, nature, work, passion, simple life, inner peace, sea, serenity. These words are powerful and stand for what I think is her wisdom of life. Even though Tove passed away in 2001, these teachings will live on forever. They are timeless. Thank you Tove for teaching us so much about life.

I personally recommend everybody to read Tove's literature to find the same wisdom I found. It can also be found in her art work. When did you last allow yourself to experience something that you knew would change you for good?

  3. I was a pretty big fan of Moomins when I was a young girl. I read the books, watched the cartoons and so on. but today my mom loves those tiny creatures and she even kind of collects Moomins related goodies like mugs, boxes etc. so your post was definitely exciting for me and it brought back some sweet childhood memories. and that trip you took sounds like an amazing one! it was great to read your notes too!
