A Nordic breakfast

Helsinki, 0 degrees

My love for you would blot out the sun like a cloud made out of yogurt. I hope you brought a spoon.

Some days ago when I went out for a walk, I stopped many times and smiled. Smiled, because the locals in Helsinki are just so wonderful, and from time to time I just have to stop to take it in. Spring is one of those occasions when Helsinkians start to smile and talk in a special way to each other. We smile to strangers. People are super cool and look great in their sunglasses, hats and leather jackets. I was stopped by two older ladies in their 60's and 70's that 1) were stylish themselves 2) gave me a compliment for my jacket. So cool! The sunny spring weather is really caressing us right now. People are friendlier and the whole city has come to life. The beat is on again. When I crossed the streets and felt the wind running through my hair today, I felt the genuine love I have for this city. Helsinki is truly a city that sparkles.

We up in the North love high fiber breakfasts. I don't know if I've mentioned it before to you readers, but I usually enjoy wholegrain porridge in the mornings. This because I believe in the fact that if you have a good breakfast, your day can't turn out to be bad.

During the weekends I sometimes go for brunch or have fruit, rye bread sandwiches (with butter, cheese, ham, cucumber, tomatoes), yoghurt and an omelets, and even occasionally waffles, bacon and eggs.

However, during working days I as good as always have porridge for brekkie. The porridge I eat is made out of four grains: rye, wheat, oat and barley. I recently came across an interesting blog post (in Finnish) on Lunni Leipoo that showcases five different porridges, one for each working day. Some time ago my sister also introduced me to a lovely porridge mix. She mixes porridge with natural yoghurt, cinnamon and honey. It's delicious! Usually at our home, me and my boy eat porridge with berries (blueberries, raspberries, lingonberries, blackcurrant and/or strawberries) and I add a little bit of butter. Sometimes we also add milk, bananas and/or nuts.

Arkipäivisin syön melkein aina puuroa. Yleisin puuroni on Nallen neljän viljan täysjyväpuuro.

From the blog post that I mentioned above, I think the best ideas are to mix porridge with peanut butter, since I'm crazy about Nutella having lived in Italy. I also liked the idea of mixing cottage cheese with porridge. I have to try these asap!

Do you have any good hints on what I could try with porridge? What do you have for breakfast?

Miten te syötte puuronne? Mikä on mielestänne hyvä aamupala?

What's your opinion?

  3. mmm yum, all those porridge photos make me hungry. and the fresh berries look absolutely delicious too! I eat my porridge with berries or jam and I also add butter. but porridge is a rather rare brekkie. my usual one (at workdays) includes toast (bread). since I start my workday at 8 am I must eat around 7.30 which is kind of early for me :P but I usually have a snack around 10 am when I'm actually already hungry. oh and here in Estonia spring has left the building. we have like 20 cm of snow again, the roads are slippery and the weather overall sucks...

  4. I don't eat much porridge, but partially because I always thought of it as "boring" ---- clearly I was mistaken! Thanks for the inspiration! Breakfast certainly is the most important meal of the day :)
