Waking up on a chilly autumnal morning with colorful leaves outside your window and realizing that you live in a place where you get red cheeks just by walking in the woods, now that is my cup of tea! Being back home again in Helsinki sure has been great. I returned to go to school again for three consecutive days - how inspiring! I'm getting closer to understanding what I will write my master thesis on. This time I had courses in responsible leadership, strategy in practice and action & constructive research. I found this autumnal video of the Finnish clothing label Samuji, and I thought it described my mood this Sunday morning so I thought I would share it with you readers so that you could sense my autumnal feelings.
Herätä aamulla syksyisessä Helsingissä, jossa ikkunan ulkopuolella minua viehättävät keltaiset ja punaiset lehdet puussa, ja jossa saan punaiset posket luontokävelyistä - siitä minä pidän! On ollut ihanaa olla takaisin kotona. Palasin Helsinkiin keskiviikkona ja loppuviikko menikin sitten Haaga-Helian maisteriohjelman puitteissa. Tähän asti ylemmän asteen matkailuohjelma on ollut erittäin inspiroiva! Tuntuu, että joka kerta kun käyn kursseilla (kolmena päivänä kuukaudessa), alan hahmoittamaan lopputyöni aiheen. Tällä kertaa kurssini liittyivät vastuulliseen johtamiseen, strategian laatimiseen ja tutkimusten tekemiseen. Löysin Samujin videon vähän aikaa sitten, ja koska mielestäni se kuvailee syksyisiä tuntemuksiani niin hyvin, ajattelin jakaa sen teidän lukijoiden kanssa.
I also thought that this would be the first out of two blog posts about my recent trip to Gothenburg, Sweden. As I've told you in earlier posts, I was there on a culinary business trip so food was definitely the theme of the trip. I was also so happy to meet one of my local friends who I met six years ago in Castellanza, Italy, when I was there on study exchange!
Ajattelin myös, että tämä blogikirjoitus olisi ensimmäinen kahdesta kirjoituksista, joka kertoisi matkastani Göteborgiin. Kuten olen aikaisimmissa kirjoituksissa maininnut, olin siellä ruokamatkalla. Matkan aikana olin myös todella iloinen siitä, että onnistuin näkemään yhden paikallisen kaverin. Tapasimme kuusi vuotta sitten Italiassa, kun olin siellä opiskeluvaihdossa, ja nyt vihdoinkin meillä oli mahdollisuus nähdä taas toisiamme!
Gothenburg is known as the second largest city in Sweden, as the gateway to West Sweden, but also for its beautiful, rugged nature and history of traditions linked to the sea. Lately, it has been more widely known as Sweden's culinary capital. Sweden chooses on an annual basis a Swedish city to represent the country's culinary scene. I was in Gothenburg on the World Food Travel Summit 2013. For me the trip was very exciting since it was my first time in Gothenburg.
Göteborg on tunnettu Ruotsin toiseksi suurimpana kaupunkina, mutta myös porttina Länsi-Ruotsiin. Göteborgilla on myös kaunis luonto ja mielenkiintoinen merenkäyntiin liittyvä historia. Tänä vuonna kaupunki on nimetty Ruotsin ruokapääkaupungiksi. Osallistuin itse Göteborgissa järjestettävään World Food Travel Summit 2013 - konferenssiin. Matka oli todella mielenkiintoinen koska en ollut koskaan aikaisemmin käynyt Göteborgissa.
I straight away felt cozy in Gothenburg since the city was green and had trams like we do in Helsinki. The beautiful canal gave a nice feel to the city. I found it was very easy to move around and orientate in the city.
Tunsin oloni heti kotoisaksi Göteborgissa koska kaupungissa on raitiovaunuja kuten Helsingissäkin. Kaunis kanava loi ainutlaatuisen tunnelman kaupunkiin ja varsinkin kanavarannassa olevat ruokapaikat viehättivät tätä matkailijaa. Göteborg on sopivan kokoinen kaupunki; kaupungissa oli helppo liikkua paikasta toiseen ja löysin helposti uudet kohteet kartan avulla.
Gothenburg, like all Swedish cities in general, is known for its big cinnamon buns. Of course, we also have them in Helsinki, but in Gothenburg they were about three times as big as in Helsinki! I had to share mine, it was impossible to finish one by myself!
Göteborg, kuten kaikki ruotsalaiset kaupungit, tunnetaan isoista korvapuusteistaan. Tietysti meilläkin Helsingissä on korvapuusteja, mutta Göteborgissa ne olivat n. kolme kertaa isompia kuin Helsingissä! Minun piti aina jakaa omiani, koska en millään voinut syödä loppuun asti edes yhtä...
Suosikkialueeni Göteborgissa oli nimeltään Haga. Pidin nimestä, koska se muistutti minua taas Helsingistä. Göteborgin Haga erosi kuitenkin Helsingin Haagasta aika lailla; Göteborgin Haga oli yksi kaupungin vanhimmista alueista ja siellä oli linnake nimeltään Skansen Kronan. Tämän lisäksi alueelta löytyivät paljon kahviloita ja kauppoja. Pidin myös siitä, että alueella ei ollut kauhean paljon autoja, vaan siellä saattoi kävellä rauhassa.
1600-luvulla rakennettu linnake kutsutaan nimellä Skansen Kronan ja se sijaitsee kukkulalla. Kukkulalta oli mahtavat maisemat! Myöhemmin oli hauska verrata vanhoja kuvia paikasta tämän päivän linnakkeeseen.

As many of you readers know, I'm a huge crayfish fan so I was delighted when I heard that we were supposed to have a crayfish party during one of the evenings in Gothenburg. Look at this wonderful dish! The party might have been a little bit too tame for my taste, but the food was delicious!
Kuten moni teistä lukijoista jo tietää, olen yltiörapufani joten olin onneissani kun kuulin, että konferenssin aikana järjestetään rapujuhlat. Mielestäni rapulautanen oli todella vaikuttava - olin täysin myyty! Juhlat olivat ehkä mielestäni liian kesyt, olen tottunut laulamaan ja syömään paljon enemmän, mutta ruoka oli mitä mainioin!
How often do you travel for food? How important is the local food of a destination when you travel?

I never travel for food. Though in America, it's not terribly hard to find restaurants that offer cuisine from the corners of the world.

Wow, Gothenburg looks like a wonderful city, interesting architecture with great charm. Its always enlightening to learn about different foods that belong to different countries, i think its very important when traveling, the cinnamon buns look so delicious! As does the seafood. Your course sounds really beneficial to your career. Beautiful photos hun!

I don't travel for food at all. but I and my fiance loved the food in Crete and Prague. I sometimes dream about the things we ate in Crete. everything was SO delicious and fresh and... just perfect!

For some reason I've always been more attracted by Gothenburg rather than, for example, Stockholm. I've never been in Sweden, but so far the images of that city, together with the warm recommendations of a friend of mine who has visited it last Spring, inspired me a lot. What I like the most is that, even if it's supposed to be a big city, there's still a calm and cosy atmosphere, as you said. It's a bit like Helsinki for this aspect, and that's one of the reasons I miss Helsinki as well :)
ReplyDeleteThe castle and the seaside place at twilight look stunning, and the food as well! I always try to taste some local food when I travel. Here at the moment almost all the food meetings are about autumnal products, such as chestnuts, which can be prepared in various ways. Soon we'll also start to sip some mulled wine, or vin brulè, as we call it :)

it looks amazing! reminded me of Helsinki a lot :) used to stay in Helsinki quite often in 2005 and missing it... i am from Riga and we also have trams :) the lobster dish looks amazing! x
