Book clutch

Helsinki, 20 degrees

There comes a time when you have to choose between turning the page and closing the book.

What a Saturday we have in front of us! The IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship offers us a semifinal between Finland and Sweden (and those are the best ice hockey games ever!), there are lots of events in Helsinki (the Restaurant Day and the Arabia Street Festival to mention a few) and then there is the highlight of the spring season - the Eurovision Song Contest!

Those of you readers that know me well, know that it's an annual tradition in my family to watch this song contest together, I have been raised that way, so for me it's a huge and happy event that I look forward to every spring! Back in 2007 when we hosted the event here in Helsinki I even worked as a volunteer to get a close look at what happens during the event behind the scenes! Will you watch it?

Lately, I've been fascinated by book clutches. I first stumbled upon one on The Glossy Mag's Facebook page, and then when I made some research I noticed that they're everywhere and come in all kinds of exciting forms! The most known are probably the ones of Olympia Le-Tan. Have you already looked inside these covers?

Many celebrities have also used these book clutches. These are the ones I found when I did a quick search on Pinterest. Olympia Le-Tan's ad showcases how to mix the bag with different outfits. Have you noticed any of these looks? With what would you wear the clutch?

According to Olympia Le-Tan's website: "Olympia Le-Tan is a self-taught fashion designer. She was born in London and raised in Paris and likes to say she is English, French and Vietnamese. She started her career at the Chanel design studio with Karl Lagerfeld then went on to Balmain where she worked closely with Gilles Dufour who then created his own brand with Olympia by his side.

In 2009, she launched her eponymous accessories label, combining her two obsessions, embroidery (a talent she inherited from her grand-mother), and literature (a passion she shares with her father, French illustrator Pierre Le-Tan) to create one of a kind handbags and minaudières. The bags are handmade with love in France in very limited editions."

I think the bags are adorable! I love the idea of using a book as a clutch. We all have a story to tell. The tricky part is to choose the right book to represent my personality. Right now I'm torned between The Great Gatsby, Alice in Wonderland and Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. How to choose?

On Etsy, I found a seller called p.s. Besitos that makes handmade book clutches. She even has her own website. I love how she calls the book clutch the accessory that defines you.

I think people in general like to wear the covers of their choice. I personally like people with depth to them, people that aren't obvious and don't look on the outside exactly how they are on the inside. This maybe because I belong to this kind of people. One example might be that people find it surprising that I have tattoos (two now, and I'm thinking about a third). Not once, but many times, I've shocked people by telling them about my tattoos. For me on the other hand it's a natural thing because I've always, ever since being a child, been fascinated by tattoos as a way of body decoration and art. Why do people make conclusions based on the covers we have? Isn't it more interesting to open the book and read the pages inside of it?

What's your opinion?

  2. oh no, when I wrote the comment I also checked the preview and it was totally okay :( obviously I can't remember what the whole comment said but it started with this: many people don't understand that having tattoos doesn't always mean the person comes from prison or is a criminal or something like that. at least in Estonia conservative people tend to think that way even too often. but normal people don't judge others by their hair colour, tattoos, fashion sense etc. when you don't know the person you can't decide just because you don't like tattoos. I think such people are just sad and bitter who do that.

btw, this word verification can be super annoying at times. in my opinion I write the right thing but it still says I have to write another code.. since you control all the comments anyway then maybe you could remove that verification thing? :) commenting would be much easier and faster then.

    1. Nowadays tattoos have become more common, but of course there will always be conservative people. I guess in my case, people tend to believe that I have a more classic style, to which maybe tattoos aren't associated. But my style is personal, I like an elegant style but I love tattoos as well :)
Thanks for the feedback concerning the word verification, I'll see if I can do something about that!
