First of May 2013

Helsinki, 8 degrees

The world's favorite season is the spring.  All things seem possible in May.

Dear May, the kickoff for the summer season, I want to thank you for finally arriving in Helsinki!

First of May could not have been spent in more splendid weather than what we enjoyed yesterday! Helsinki's very own spring carnival was a wonderful success!

One of this girl's favorite brunch places in town is definitely the legendary Fazer café! Having started the May Day celebrations on the 30th of April at my boyfriend's mother's place over a yummy barbeque with a couple of glasses of wine, Fazer's brunch was a must for the actual May Day! So I put on my pink dress and lipstick, a beige cardigan and my new floral scarf from Lindex, picked up my graduation hat from its box on the upper shelf of my closet, put it on, and headed for the city!

Needless to say, the brunch was excellent! May Day can't be enjoyed without champagne and wieners! And look at that dessert buffet! At this place they even didn't look at me strangely when I asked for my specialty coffee - this girl needs her proper coffee, not that mild Finnish one, which tastes like when you put your tongue out from the window = nothing!

After the rich brunch, it was time to digest some of that delicious food and burn some calories so we went for a walk to the biggest park in central Helsinki called Kaivopuisto. Later we just had to stop for a glass of bubbly at Mattolaituri, one of Helsinki's best seaside cafés!

During May Day, the park is filled with people enjoying spring picnics! The atmosphere is unique!

During the whole day I couldn't help thinking of my dad since he used to love our May Day celebrations. That is why I took out his graduation hat as well and compared the two: mine and his. As you can see, his hat has definitely had a longer and more colorful life than mine. I will always cherish his hat, as the memory of my father. My dad was also a strong believer in the traditional choir singing, which occurs in Finland during May Day. If you want to see what it's all about, have a look at the video clip here from 2007. The song starts at 1.23 (in Swedish).

I hope you had as an eventful and lovely May Day as I did! Do you have any spring carnival in your country? How do you celebrate it?

What's your opinion?

  2. nope, no carnival but we do have those "Let's do it!" campaigns where people clean the town (parks, streets etc.). those are pretty popular here in Estonia and seem to get bigger and bigger every year. we, by the way, were busy at our own garden and I think tomorrow we will go and buy a couple of new trees too :)
anyway, your day was definitely full of partying, as I can see ;) all that fabulous food and drinks and your spring outfit look great! the pink dress is totally a cherry on top of everything.
