Aztec

Helsinki, 8 degrees

It is not good to look at the clouds or your work will not progress.

Ever since I went to the Maya III exhibition at the Didrichsen Art Museum here in Helsinki with two of my friends back in February, I've been inspred by Mesoamerican patterns, particulary Aztec prints.  The exhibition presented the dualistic world view of the Maya Indians in which life, death and time are intimately intertwined. Particular attention was also paid to the exceptional precision of the Maya calendar and the measurement of time.

As many of you have probably seen, Aztec prints have been visible in fashion for some time now. It's only since February though that I feel that I've been hit with this Aztec fever.

The exhibition that I went to see came from the National Museum of Guatemala and the Popol Vuh Museum, augmented by others from the Didrichsen Art Museum’s own collection. Part of the exhibition consisted of captivating and lovely photographs of Guatemala’s Maya children taken by Jon Kaplan. This takes up the challenge of social responsibility in support of indigenous peoples: The purpose of the "I ♥ Maya" campaign is to raise money to finance the education of Maya girls. At the end of the exhibition, I bought a postcard and some worry dolls.

The worry dolls are tiny people that you can keep underneath your pillow so that you can have a good night's sleep. They came with a note saying "Let them do the worrying for you". I thought they were adorable!

Some weeks ago, I finally found an Aztec dress that I had been looking for. I ordered it from London, it is of the brand New Look. I combined it with some ballerinas from H&M, similar to the ones I showed in an earlier blog post that you can see here. What do you think of my Aztec look?

How often do you go to art exhibitions? Do they inspire you, even your way of clothing?

What's your opinion?

  1. I think that it is amazing that you've been so inspired by it! These are some great examples of that print - I especially love the nails. Your dress is fabulous!

  2. umm.. almost not at all. my home town is tiny so obviously I can't find much art from here and since most of my time is spent working then I really haven't thought about stuff like that very much.. but I really like your aztec inspired outfit. the dress and those flats make a perfect combo here! I'm just sad that our weather is still quite cold and I don't feel like dresses and skirts.

    2. Nowadays art can be found online as well, you've never visited a museum's virtual tour? Have you been to any art museum in Helsinki?

  3. I try and visit Finland regularly to see my friends. I was there last summer to attend Ruisrock in Turku and then spend a few days with my friends in Helsinki. I will be returning to Helsinki this summer or fall. Can´t wait! xM
