Self-value & self-esteem

Helsinki, 6 degrees

I myself am made entirely of flaws, stitched together with good intentions.

Since we had a lot of snow last winter, and it still hasn't melted away and given room for spring to arrive, we've had a rainy week this week in Helsinki. I stumbled upon this ad by Dove, which has been circulating on the social media plan and I thought I would ask your opinion about it. Have you seen it?

This blog post does not discuss the ad and how it relates to Dove's products. I actually didn't think of Dove's products at all when I saw this ad. I started thinking about self-value and self-esteem.

As I mentioned in my last blog post, I like to draw sometimes. I find it highly relaxing, but at the same time challenging since I only like to draw people. Usually I draw portaits of people that have touched me, and I often choose photos of either one person, or then a photo with me together with the person. When I saw the ad for Dove, it got me thinking about drawings. How drawing yourself is one of the best ways to get to know your own characteristics and so called flaws. Have you ever made a drawing of yourself? Give it a try - it's more difficult than you think, but at the same time interesting! You learn to look at yourself in a completely different way, when you look for small things that define you, that makes you different from everybody else.

How well do you feel you know yourself? Is it easy for you to describe yourself in front of others? Do you ever reflect on yourself, think about your strengths, weaknesses or beauty? Please share your experiences, I'm intrigued.

What's your opinion?

  1. I saw that ad and thought it was really interesting. Perhaps what I find the most interesting is how much people have responded to it! It really does send a powerful message.

  2. I watched the ad and it sure is pretty good.. maybe a bit too melodramatic but still, an interesting one. when it comes to me then I'm not someone who worries about my appearance all the time. I have more important things to think about. and I honestly believe one should accept herself/himself the way she or he is and try to work with everything she or he naturally has. of course I know there are exceptions too but I'm not talking about those right now.
anyway, you were right, age (time) does change us a lot. or at least many of us, not all of us. and when it comes to clothes I don't wear anymore I donate those to people who need them, sometimes I also give stuff to my fiance's sisters and the last time I gave quite a lot clothes to a daughter of a single mother. she was really happy and so was I :) I think I have sold only one or two pieces in my life.
