Lux Helsinki 2013

Helsinki, -6 degrees

Who is more foolish, the child afraid of the dark or the man afraid of the light?

*Yawn* After spending a weekend hosting three international journalists in Helsinki, this girl is happy but tired. I love organizing press trips and participating in them, it's such a great way of getting to know new and interesting people, and as the Helsinki lover I am, of course I love showing off my beloved home city. This weekend was special for many reasons, not merely because I worked 20 hours of it visiting places like SunnLatvaAlia, Santa's Cottage (read more about it in this blog post), HaltiaNuuksio National ParkHanasaariUnique Lapland Helsinki and Sea Horse. One of the reasons that made it so special is the ongoing LUX Helsinki light installation event that we are having in Helsinki right now. Tomorrow will be the last day of the event, so there is still some time to enjoy it!  This year we have a stunning amount of 13 light installations around the city where heaven meets the sea - Helsinki that is!

LUX Helsinki, which is an annual event, invites both residents and visitors to enjoy brilliant light installations during the darkest time of the year. The light installations light up a route stretching from the Olympic Stadium around Töölönlahti Bay to the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma and beyond, with an additional programme at the main square of the city - Senate Square. For more stunning photos, please see this album on Flickr here or Minna K.'s blog post here.

My favorite light installations this year are by far the ones at our National Opera (the first pictures of this blog post) and the Senate Square. The light installation at the National Opera is called Cosmogole and is designed by Philippe Morvan. As I have mentioned to you many times, the white Cathedral is Helsinki's symbol and it works as a beautiful canvas for light installations thanks to its white color. Here a video clip showing the light installation Emergence by Casa Magica (Friedrich Förster and Sabine Weißinge) at the Senate Square. Enjoy!

How was your weekend? Do you have any light installation events in your home town?

What's your opinion?

  1. Wow, those photos are beautiful, what a cool show! That's awesome that you have so many light installation events. They look really awesome!

  2. Upeita valoja .. Berliinissä näin samanlaista, City of Lights-tapahtumassa. Harmi kun en ihan tapahtuman ajaksi pääse Helsinkiin. Perjantaina tulen taas visiitille siskon luo ja olen maanantaihin asti. :) (ihana kun matkahuollosta saa välillä 5 euron lippuja ;)
