Snowy December in Helsinki

Helsinki, -14 degrees

Clear moon, frost soon.

Greetings from a white Helsinki! The later part of this week has truly been magical! Since snow fell in my beautiful capital city, the place hasn't been the same. Now the air is filled with even more charm than before. Somehow it seems that now the whole city is expecting Christmas, what fun! This is what December is all about: making wishes come true!

Here are some photos from Thursday when all Helsinkians woke up to a cozy snow blizzard. I had some trouble with getting out from our apartment building since there was so much snow in front of our front door. The snow had even got through the door due to the heavy wind.

I spent this weekend about an hour away from Helsinki, in Karjaa-Lohja. As many of you readers might already know, my sister is getting married next February so she and all of her bridesmaids (a total of eight bridesmaids), me included, headed to this cottage for the weekend to make the final plans for the wedding! We had such a nice time together! The cottage was super homey and set in a beautiful environment with a lake and lots of fields.

In a week, the temperature in Southern Finland has dropped with 20 degrees, from +10 to around -10! I thought the frost on the veranda windows was amazingly pretty!

On the way back home we stopped at Kasvihuoneilmiö, a true interior heaven, a unique place with everything you can imagine for your home! I espescially loved the lanterns as I have only started my lantern collection for our balcony!

As icing on the cake, we enjoyed this beautiful sunset while driving home! What a warm welcome back home!

How was your weekend?

Here's today's story about Finnish Christmas:

Christmas ornaments
Finland is home not merely to Santa Claus, but also to the Nordic countries’ only manufacturer of Christmas ornaments and decorations. Weiste is a Finnish family company still run by the grandchildren of the original founder. It is even more fitting that the company, K.A. Weiste Ltd, should have its head office and main factory in Helsinki's suburb called Pukinmäki (Goat Hill), since the Finnish name for Santa Claus is Joulupukki (literally: Christmas goat). Weiste is very much a family affair, with five siblings still involved in company matters. These siblings represent the third generation since schoolteacher Kalle Aimo Weiste got the Christmas tree ball rolling in 1924. The family members still have homes in the vicinity of the Pukinmäki factory, presiding over the business that has weathered all kinds of challenges (among others wars and economic downturns) for more than 85 years.
Weiste's leading products include silver stars for the top of the Christmas tree and the very successful “Baby’s First Christmas” coloured bauble sets. Weiste is well known in Finland but 80 percent of its production is actually destined for export, with France and the UK accounting for the majority and other important customers in Russia and Norway.

“Of course, there are always Christmas tree baubles, but the preferences for colours change,” Weiste's product manager Helena Friman notes.

“Even so, the most popular colours are the traditional ones – silver, gold, red, snow white. There is also a bigger market for table decorations, not only tree decorations. We play around with snowflakes, reindeer and flowers, for example, and patterns and shapes of tinsel. My own favourite is a filigree butterfly.”

  1. oh, I didn't even know about Weiste but their decorations are absolutely beautiful! I love everything you've shared from them.
though I think I don't actually have favourite decorations and ornaments.. or maybe candles, especially the scented ones. I love those!
