A gold mine of experience

Helsinki, 15 degrees

Last Thurday I had the chance to yet again experience something unique: the Tytyri Limestone Mine Museum in Lohja 100 meters beneath ground level! Thanks to my work I got to get acquainted with one of the few mines still operating in Finland. The reason why my workplace arranged this opportunity to see the mine was that it has lately been on display in international media thanks to the fact that it has a so called pop down restaurant, operated by Helsinkian restaurant Muru. You can learn more about that by watching the video clip I've attached to this blog post.

Even though I didn't get to enjoy dinner at the pop down restaurant, I got to see the restaurant venue and the mine visit is something I will remember for the rest of my life! The mine itself was cool (8 degrees) and humid, and it was quite exciting to learn about how the work which is done there on a daily basis through drawings, photographs and actual machiery. I don't think that many people give a thought to the important work that is done there. I thought we were going to go down under ground by elevator, but actually they had carved out a tunnel so that one could descend by car to the mine museum level. The actual mine functions on a level still beneath the museum level.

Interesting enough the limestone that the mine cuts off and sends out becomes later paper, e.g. for the fashion magazines I present from time to time here on my blog. It's always interesting to go to the true source of a material, don't you think?

Have you ever experienced a mine? What do you think about these kinds of unique dining experiences?

What's your opinion?

  1. Oh my gosh, that certainly is a unique dining experience! I am sure there are a ton of people who would love to experience that! What a great opportunity!

  3. yes, I have, when I was in high school maybe? or in university.. gosh, I can't remember but I know I have. it was an oil shale mine. and what an exciting experince that was! though the restaurant experience seems to be even better. four courses? wow! though I think I'm not actually able to eat that much, haha. even three (also two) courses are way too much for me.

    1. It truly was! I guess I am kind of a daredevil, I like trying new things! Driving down there, one really didn't understand that one was that deep down so it wasn't scary at all!
